1787 Brasher Doubloon???

Is this a fake? If so, were many of them made? What is it made of?
This was in my great uncle's coin collection.
I am including the scans as an attachment, hope it works.

I'm no expert but it looks like a cast copy. I hope I'm wrong!

Yes the mint used to sell them in the gift shop as souvineers. My grandfather had one too it was made of lead. I asked him where it got it and he said in the mint gift shop. No idea what year.

bigbadchad777: I'm no expert on Brasher Doubloons, however from the photo the coin appears to be one of many cast "historic reproduction copies".

It's hard to tell from the photo, but is possibly a gold plated coin with some of the plating having worn off at the high points where a more silvery/gray colored metal appears to be showing??

If so, then it's not solid gold and therefore not an original B.D.

I am anxious to hear others' opinions who are more familiar with the specific coin type. Either way it should be a sentimental heirloom that you will enjoy owning. Good luck with it!
