3 degrees of MPDs

Three IH's I've picked up recently are a good illustration of how desirability rises along with the misplaced date. The first is the very rare 1870 S5 where the 0 rises dramitically above the denticles, the second an 1883 S8 "3 in denticles", and the last a 1907 S45 where the right tip of the 7 just barely rises above the denticles. Pricewise the 1870 carries a strong premium, the 1883 a moderate one, and the 1907 barely any.

Great pics. Sure like that 1883 look. The price on the 1870 has risen strongly over the past 5 years.

I once bought a NGC 67R 1898 with a MPD (S25)! Might post later if I can find the photo file......image

You know, Paul, you almost make me want to start looking for all these indian head varieties! Or at least to come close to your copper coin photography skills!

Anybody know about a MPD on an 1875-S 20c piece? I have a nice strong Fine example, and there is clearly "something going on" down there in the denticles. Looks like the top of a 7.

Excellent thread and we need more like it. I have Flynn's MPD book, -Two dates are better than one-.
Its fascinating. My favorite MPDs are on Barbers. I enjoy the flags of the ones pertruding from the denticles.

Here are a few of my favorites. The Flying Eagle has the bases of the 857 in the neck, the 1865 is a RPD with the flag of the 5 in the denticles, the 1897 MPD in neck and the 1898 with top of a 9 in the denticles. Maybe there are more than 3 degrees??image

  • LMV, I don't know how many different ones there are, but MPDs on 1875S 20 cents seem to be pretty common. There was a guy that used to post over on the coppercoins chat (maybe still does?) that was really up on them. Maybe CD could get you in touch with him.

Here's a pic of one that I think is MPD #2.

Interesting that the premium value is proportional to how "dramatic" or noticeable the MPD is.

Just like with a lot of varieties, if you can "totally" see the difference the coin is worth a strong premium,
If you can "barely" see it then it's "barely" worth anything more than a regular one.

    Thanks, Spiny.

Another dealer spotted that in my case at the mall, and I had no idea the MPD was there. He told me about it and said I could get a small premium for it if I put it on eBay, but I really didn't have much interest in doing it at the time. He said my asking price was a little low on the coin but I told him I was only selling it based on its other merits as a type coin, as I am not into die varieties. It's a nice solid, original grey Fine , as I recall, and I was pleased to pick it up at the Charlotte ANA show in March, just two or three tables down from where I'd overheard a pair of dealers lamenting the lack of nice circulated twenty-cent pieces!

Frankly, I'm surprised it's still in my case, but I am glad enough to have it there, as the only other 20c I have in there is a weak G4 with minor problems.

  • Great pics again Paul. Glad to see AW's coins worked out well. Am I also seeing something going on in the denticles below the 1 in 1907?
