Do you think cleaned coins tone differently than uncleaned coins?

If so, is it still "natural toning"?

Yes!! The toning a coin takes on when uncleaned is in most cases much different in appearance than the toning a coin takes on when it has been cleaned and then housed in such a way that it "naturally" tones again. As for if this is natural.....hmmm.....well to the purist the answer would be no. Myself, it depends I guess, but in most cases I think the "community" at large would consider this natural. The surfaces take the toning differently is more or less what it comes down to.

Not sure if this is what you were looking for Seth.

Absolutely. There is a big difference between "original" toning and "secondary" toning, which occurs after a coin has been cleaned.

  • I think it depends on how they were cleaned ->

mechanical cleaning/whizzing makes fresh new coin for toning to occur

chemical cleaning (overdipping) kills luster and coins do not tone very well because they are dead
