1864 L PCGS 64R IHC to reappear at the FUN show.

The only red speciman sold for around 138K at it's last appearance. It's the only type 3 known, one of 2 1864L proofs in the Pennsylvania collection. Wasn't on display with the rest of the set at Baltimore but it looks like it's going to be offered after all!

Anyone want to venture a hammer price guess??

I saw the picture of that coin and some of the rest of the collection on a flyer I received in the mail from Heritage two days ago. What is the story on the Palm Beach Collection, did the owner tire of it quickly? My guess is it won't reach reserve price and will end at $110,000.

Not sure, Mike. I know it's been put together over a long period of time. Now that it's complete, perhaps they are moving on to another series, as others have done. I recognize one of the proofs as one I used to own and hope to get it back in Jan.image No, I'm not telling which one.

Lakesammman, would you mind giving us non-IHC experts a lesson on the different types invovled here? Thanks.

Here's a link that shows the date positions for the type 1 and 2. These are patterns but are the same dies as the bronze coins. If you click on the Al picture, it will magnify it so you can see the date/bust relationship and the die line on the neck, this a die characteristic of the type 2.

The type 3 is similar to the type 1 but has a slightly different date position with respect to the bust and denticles. So far, only one type 3 is known. If I can find a picture of it, will post it (unless someone can beat me to it).

When I previewed the coin in 1996, it was insured for 30K. I should have lost it and reimbursed Bowers for he loss!image. Anyone want to start an ethics thread with that as the theme??
