<< <i>This is all that I've got for decent toning. Not end-roll, not particularly good lighting. not a Morgan >>
Maybe, but it's still cool! Thanks for sharing.

Russ, sorry to hear your unable to hold on to beautiful ladies
Nice addition you got there!!!
And another that stopped by and visited for a while.
Lablover,
Don't feel sorry. Outside of the dealers here, I'm probably the luckiest member of the forum! I get to see lots of cool coins, fondle them, learn about them and love them - even if only for a brief period of time.

I think end-roll toned coins are way under-rated and have been buying every nice one I can find. Nice? Bright colors (especially blues and reds), sharp lines, clean surfaces......and it's really cool when you get matching obverse and reverse.
They're far more rare than mint bag or album toned pieces in my opinion. The last significant group I purchased was from a complete bag of 1888-P's that had been put away in rolls. I ended up with about 25 pieces total that I thought were worthy of buying. The best 14 went into a single Capital Plastics holder and look great.
There was ONE, and only ONE, Morgan in the last Heritage sale that I wanted for my collection and it was an end-roll toned piece. I bid it up to $1400 and then dropped out because it was apparent that the other bidder wanted the coin. I talked to him later and hope to secure the coin.

I'm not convinced that the last coin you posted (1887) is end-roll toned. I suspect it's a bag toned piece because it appears to show a textile pattern as well. I've picked up a number of GSA coins (which I know weren't placed in paper rolls) that show a strong line of separation between colors. The cause? Most likely a fold in the bag resting on the coin.
The most dramatic I own is an 1878-CC (softpack) that is one half red, one half blue with a straight line of demarcation between colors.
Mgoodm3: As the end of the roll is folded over the coin, layers of differing thicknesses lay on, or near, the coin's surfaces thereby imparting the different colors.

GSAGUY,
You might be right. I'm still learning.
It shows the angles more clearly. Your verdict?

Wouldn't be unheard of to have someone pulling coins out of bags (which could already be toned) and then putting them in rolls.
I'll be a politician here......we're both right.
