Wondercoin Wants to Roll Me Like a Joint in Chess....coin related

Regarding playing a friendly game of chess in another thread, wondecoin was quoted as saying "Anytime, dragon" in a bold manner, and also said that he has a positive record playing someone who is actually being trained by a russian grandmaster! I honestly believe that wondercoin must be an awfully strong player, but I think I can defeat him even though I haven't even played in several years, and am not even sure I remember how to correctly set up the pieces on the board.

In fact, I'm so confident (foolishly?) that I can defeat wondercoin that I would be willing to give up collecting Morgan dollars and start collecting moderns should I lose to him, maybe a set of some lovely FS Jefferson nickels or proof SBA's. I am fairly confident I would be able to trade most of my nicer Morgans for some SBA's and Jeff's should I lose to wondercoin.

Many of you here know wondercoin to be a top notch dealer and an overall intelligent individual, and would probably side with him, but I am willing to forever give up Morgan dollars if he defeats me in a 1 game match over the board.

Is it worth risking your passion and collecting interests forever over one chess game and pride, and do you think I stand a chance against wondercoin???

A game over the Board. That would be "wonderful". How long do you get to make your next move.

Well Wondercoin says he's rusty, but even I remember how to set up the pieces, I think.
If you need any help in remembering how the pieces move, just let me know.

Wondercoin is a very smart guy and he did "move into moderns" pretty early. It would be
extremely unwise to underrate him. Of course anyone who still wants to play after they've
forgotten how could be a most formidable opponent, too.

No it's not worth the risk, and should be a very good game. Keep us informed.

Hard to tell. Ask him if he's rated. I'm rated around 1800 USCF, above average but no great shakes. I'd say anybody being trained by a Russian GM (one of would be near Master level (2200) and among the top few thousand players in the world. Or their daddy has a few bucks to throw away.

I wouldn't touch it personally unless you think he's blowing smoke.

Dragon: My "anytime" comment came AFTER your comment questioning the couple of chess players (including myself) who politely said they either played at master level or had beaten a master in their day. image

That having been said, I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY YOU OR NEARLY ANYONE ON THIS FORUM CHESS. Would you like me to try to set up a room for a bunch of us to play at the next Long Beach show in 2/04? Or, perhaps at the FUN show in January? In fact, I can speak with Bob Hughes (and/or his Russian Grandmaster teacher image ) and perhaps we can arrange a tournament between the forum members at either event. We can set up tiers for beginners, mid-level and advanced Chess players and have prizes for each tier. What do you say? ANYTIME image

Greg: BigE is right about having a chess computer by your side. FUN is "right around the corner" and I'll be there for something like 8 or 9 days - a Chess tournament would be great FUN at FUN image And, the next Long Beach show is just as good as well, as I could easily set up a tournament and a big dinner following the games. BTW, I just spoke with Bob Hughes and he would also enjoy playing in a tournament with us either at FUN or Long Beach. He suggested we have (2) tiers in the tournament. One tier for beginners and "weaker" players and the other tier for "B" players and above. It would be fun. He also gave me the phone number of his Russian Grandmaster teacher, Babakuli Annakov, and I may just take a lesson or two before the games begin. image If anyone else would also like a couple lessons before the event, just PM me for his phone number as well - he is out of Dallas. image

    wondercoin,

I am a simple, unassuming man, like a farmer if you will. It would not be fair for you to take lessons from a russian grandmaster prior to perhaps playing against me, are you trying to intimidate me and force me to retract my challenge in total embarrassment?

Would anyone bet on me winning???

Use coins in slabs for the pieces and silicone the real ones to the slabs with a corresponding value to pawn, bishop etc., and winner takes all. Wondercoin could use moderns and Dragon could use silver dollars. image------------BigE

If you guys have the tournament @ LB in 2/04, count me in -- for the lower tier players, that is!

    Sounds like a great idea!

  • Heck, if you are going to do this, you should do it right. A beginners bracket,
and a USCF rated main tournament. (Certified director right here image ) I may be
only a C class player myself, but it is still a good mix: chess and coins!

The only thing which would make me doubt you in the least is that you said
I don't sound like a chess player. But then I don't do much of anything the
normal way. I suspect Wondercoin is far better than you think and that he
may only beat you if you underestimate him.

I have to suspect we might have a lot of talent around here for the blood thirsty
liquidation of opponents. Hmmmm... maybe I could brush up in time...

Cladking: As I mentioned previously, I am a bit rusty with the Chess as I truly have not had the time over the past 5-10 years to devote to playing that often. It's been a long time since the days I lived in Santa Monica, CA in a rent controlled apartment and played Chess on the beach all day!! I do love the game though and could easily use as an excuse to blow a night or two the need to try to stop Dragon from collecting Morgans image

I have played just 5 games with Bob Hughes this year as the extent of my Chess play (no games really all of last year), but lost 2/3 games to Bob when he asked that we play speed chess (a 5 minute game) - I found I was too rusty for that image When I sat down and enjoyed roughly a 1 hour game, I did beat Bob 2/2 thus far and Bob told me today he is roughly a "1700" rated player. From the conversation I had with Bob today, I surmised I am closer to a 1900-2000 rated player at this time, which Bob called "expert". Bob told me today "2200" is where expert becomes "master". So, if Dragon is roughly a "2100-2200" player, he should beat me, but, with Chess anything is possible. Bob told me today that even as a 1700 rated player he recently beat a couple masters in a few of the tournament games he participated in. And, we all remember the movie "Rocky". image So, there you have it - my Chess stature is now an open book and I will not ask what a Chess clock is or anything like that. I am ready to go to battle with anyone who would like a game! image

More on chess and coins - the numismatic literature dealer par excellence George Kolbe plays at Expert level. I'll probably think of some more connections later!
  • Another good reason to come to Long Beach or FUN.

I love chess (not that I've played much in the last 15 years). I'm sure I'd get killed in the
upper bracket though I'd feel embarrassed to be in the "beginner" bracket (it's not like I
need instructions to remember how to play).

Interesting to learn there are so many chess people who collect coins.

I hope Dragon and Mitch play.

Yesterday, I invited Dragon to FUN in 1/04 and even offered to make all the arrangements for the tournament - he cant' commit. Then, I invited Dragon to Long beach in 2/04 and offered to make all the arrangements -he still can't commit. Now, he is talking about a Central States show 7 months from now - heck by then, Frattlaw, who has agreed to play in the lower tier, can take enough lessons to beat me! image

I am proceeding with trying to set up a Chess tournament at either FUN or Long Beach - if Dragon shows, he shows. If he doesn't, I'll know why image
