Beaumont, Texas Show -- PCI Green 1879-P & PCI Gold 1883-O Morgans

At this weekend's Beaumont Texas local coin show I bought 2 two-sided toned Morgans for $25 each, but don't have photos of them to post yet...

Both are in PCI MS-63 slabs (I know that I should be flogged and scolded for being so naughty). But they were so pretty and so reasonably priced that I just had to have them.

One's an 1879-P in a green 10 digit PCI holder that's quite pretty which I paid an MS-60 price for (low downside risk) with satiny contrast between devices & field. If it happens to really be a 63 I got it at half of bid, however if it's a 64 it could be worth 4x what I paid -- who cares, it's a pretty, common date Morgan... The other's a gorgeous fully struck 1883-O with partially PL surfaces in a PCI gold holder (really naughty of me).

Both of these coins are beautifully naturally toned on both sides with browns reds & blues.

I really appreciate the fact that alot of collectors eschew the PCI slabbed coins, because that leaves some low hanging fruit for me to purchase at bargain basement prices. One can ususally purchase PCI slabbed MS-63's for an MS-60 price, and feel comfortable as long as you can tell an Unc from an AU Morgan.

This hobby can be alot of fun, for not alot of dollars!

  • I agree with you Stuart. I have picked up some really nice examples of the Morgan S.D. common dates in both the older green PCI and (shudder) ICG holders. I usually only buy when I can see them in person, however.

TwoDogs: I agree with you. I much prefer to purchase all coins in person, unless I can get an accurate description of the coins on the phone from someone I know & trust -- and then only with return privilege.

For me it's too much of a hassle to buy online or via mail order -- I'd prefer to take an afternoon when I have some spare leisure time & see the coins in person.

I'm a strong believer in buying the coin and not the holder. But I like it when the holder helps me buy a coin that I already like at a discount price!

  • Stuart,

If you've got a digital camera, snap a couple of pics and share them with us. Glad you're pleased with your purchases. Small shows can be a great place to pick up some bargains.

I had to flip a coin between the Beaumont show and Long Beach.....LB won.image

GSAGUY: I'll give it a shot with our digital camera -- however I've not yet mastered photographing slabbed coins with much success.

I'll give it a try and will post the images for your viewing pleasure. They are not your type of brightly toned monster dollars -- but are more subtle darkly toned browns, orangey reds & blues.

The type that I love most.
