Morgan VAMs & The Collectors Who Love Them

Can anyone recommend a good guide for the pricing of Morgan & Peace Dollars
according to their VAM attributes? I have all my Morgans in ANACS slabs & when
I'm on Ebay I always see Morgans advertised high above normal buy/sell prices because
it's a "Top 100" or "Hot 50" etc. So, what I'm looking for is a price guide for Morgan VAMs.
Bought a lot of $ and then slabbed them. Thanks to all of you here who take them time
to help out the new & unknowing. Alex

For Morgans, the best source is the quarterly "Top 100 Insights Newsletter" newsletter that Michael Fey puts out. Contact him at Feyms@aol.com.

Don't know about Peace Dollars. You can pickup a Hot 50 Peace Dollar book (search Amazon, Ebay, and Google); but any prices are probably a couple years old.

I recommend Michael Fey's Top 100 Value Guide.... P.O. Box 9157, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.

It's a subscription-only price guide, some folks think some of the prices are too high, and people seem to either love Michael or... well, not... but he's probably THE expert in the world on what VAMs actually sell for day in and day out.

    When in doubt, don't.
  • As far as I can tell, VAMLINK has not been updated in at least 2 years. I emailed them once and got no reply. It's too bad it's so out of date.

    Forgot to include:
Just received the latest L&C Coin catalog. I have not bought from them yet (probably will place an order this week). They have a huge supply of Morgan's and varieties. Looks like all of the VAM's they list are top 100's. I love Morgans, but these *top 100* prices for Morgans sure are high. I guess there's a market for them, but too much of a premium for my budget.

If it was up-to-date, who would pay for subscriptions for up-to-date info. image Actually, there is some new stuff on there, but, generally, it hasn't been updated per se.

The valu-guide is published quarterly by M Fey, and as far as other companies "overpricing" the attributed VAMs they offer for sale - let me just say they take the valu-guide a bit literally, and ignore the possibility that the current price could very well be the highest price ever paid by someone who desparately wanted a particular coin.

I just hunt for unattributed varieties, and yes, I have a lot of holes in my collection. but I am simply not going after coins when they are at the apex of their pricing. VAM collecting is more popular than in the past (at least with dealers/sellers image ) and the prices are reflective of that.

  • The premiums on *Top 100* VAMS seem risky to me. My *Top 100* book should be arriving any day now. I bought it just for educational purposes and maybe cherrypick a few. But I'm doing it just for fun and would not pay a premium for any of them. I guess there's a market for them, but I wonder how long it's going to last.

    My two cents worth.

My favorite VAM Varieties are the major ones like the 1878 ('79 reverse), 1879 ('78 reverse), and the 1880-CC ('78 reverse) where 50% of the coin is not standard for the issue. image

With the strong VAM Dollar collector following & demand, I would be pleased to harvest some VAM's which may lie as buried treasure in my Morgan Dollar collection. image
