    I love albums.....

    I've got Dansco sets for;

    Ikes
    SBAs
    Kennedys
    Jeffs
    Lincolns
    Type Set

I also have a Library of Coins album complete with toned silver Roosies.

I also have a Wayte Raymond albums partially finished in Roosies and Peace $. I'm also doing a modern commem BU set in a Watye Raymond album.

And finally I have a complete Wayte Raymond Type Set and a bunch of boards for mint sets that I haven't even started yet.

I obviously love albums and I encourage everyone and anyone to do albums as well as Registry sets.

There's nothing like seeing an album full of coins!

I really like the old Whitman bookshelf albums. Have slowly been replacing my newer Whitman "classic" albums. For two reasons: 1) They lay flat, so won't slide off your desk when you stack them. 2) Old paper doesn't tone coins as fast.

I bought these three yesterday, for $8 each or $24 total, which is about the cost of one new classic album. Finding used ones in good shape can be a little difficult though.

The old Whitman Bookshelf Albums were discontinued in 1978...25 years ago. It is a good indication of just how popular coin collecting was with the general public that they can still be found in nice condition all these years later. The same can be said of their more expensive rivals, the Library of Coins albums, which I believe were discontinued circa 1981-2.

The one on the left has a different logo. Was wondering what year they made that change. Seems to be newer than the other two. All are © 1960, but my two seated half albums say © 1961.

I also picked up a Dansco type album, pretty nice. Have been cracking coins out of slabs all day to fill it. imageimage

    Whitman Folders: 6
    Whitman Bookshelf: 3
    Whitman Classic: 1
    Library of Coins: 1
    Dansco: 2
    National: 2

I do think the globe logo on the bookshelf is newer than the eagle one.
The copyright date is not necessarily the date made but rather the oldest it can be.
for example, my C. 1959 peace dollar library of coins album has Kennedies listed in the catalog in the back.
Have whitman folders copyright 1940, 1949, 1952, they are only in fair shape.

I've pretty much always used whitman because thats all that was around to buy when I first started collecting. I have started using Harris they are just as cheap and to me look nicer the old blue whitman. I still use whitman for cents .05, .25 (Not state quarters) .50. dimes, dollars and state quarter are in harris.

The Whitman albums with the eagle logo are the older albums. I don't know just when the change took place. You might ask the question across the street because I believe David Lange has a major collection of coin albums and probably knows the answer.

  • So what does the Wayte Raymond type set Album look like? What coins go in? Any pix?!

  • All my type sets are placed in Dansco albums...so I can gaze at them all at once...my more rare ones, I leave in their original plastic or they are graded.
  • I'm a big fan of Dansco albums. I'm amazed at how nice they make even my less attractive coins look (and I have a lot of those image). For my coins, it's like putting a very nice picture frame on a average looking painting.

    The Dansco's I have are:
Morgan Date Set (2 coins to go)
U.S. Type Set (my lifetime project)
    SAE (done)
    State Quarter (done)

Probably another Morgan Date Set on the way since I'm getting close to another complete set. I haven't used any other albums, but IMO it's hard to go wrong with coins in almost any nice album.

"The copyright date is not necessarily the date made but rather the oldest it can be."

Right, but the last time this exact same thread was posted someone said they all came out in 1960. Obviously, some of the bookshelf albums were introduced a year later. Also, when a revision is made, most companies place a secondary copyright on the product, like © 1960, 1970. Whitman didn't do that though.

My Dansco US type album makes brown copper look really nice BTW. I think blast white silver looks better against the dark blue background of the Whitman album, however.
  • I have a number that I've picked up used, and really like them. They all say copyright 1960, but they've definitely been manufactured at diff times. I think the later ones have a solid or hollow star indicating whether the coins are in the "basic," "secondary," or "advanced" collections, as noted in the back of one of the albums.

There's nothing like being able to see many coins at once. I have slabs too, but sure like albums.

  • As a collector I used to use albums for all my coins. Now I like to have them
slabbed. I get a good solid 3rd party grade and it makes the coin easier to
catelogue with my software. It also gives my coins better protection (I hope).

I have a few folders, but for the most part they are secondary to me. Just don't get into them all that much.
  • Whitman Folders:
    Lincoln Cents 1941-1974
    Buffalo Nickels
    Jefferson Nickels 1938-1961
    Jefferson Nickels 1962-1995
    Roosevelt Dimes 1965-
    Washington Quarters 1965-1987
    Washington Quarters 1988-2000
    Washington Quarters 2000-

    Littleton Folder:
    Mercury Dimes

    Dansco Albums:
    Lincoln Cents 1909-2000
    Type Set 1800-

And Im getting seven different albums/folders for Christmas

My key-date collection is PCGS slabbed, but

I did buy one album to store one example of each state quarter.

All of my circulated collection is either in Whitman Classic albums, or is gonna be.
I like the Dansco albums as well, and have had one or two, but didn't keep them
cuz I wanted all the same type.

Its how I started 35 years ago. I still have some of them. Then I graduated to Whitman Classis and Danscos. I soon got rid of those(due to the slide problems). I now only collect slabs.
