Who says toned coin prices are declining? Heritage!

Wow! Many of the nice toned Morgans went for what I would call "strong" money in the Heritage auction this evening! Interestingly, Many of them were coins that I sold to the consignor the past couple of years. This sale, in the midst of what is being called a down market for toned material, reinforces the confidence in my "eye" for color and I'm happy for the consignor for doing well even in a so called down market. I bid on only one lot, #9071, the 02-O ICG 66. I wasn't even close, (well, I was pretty close). I wanted it because It was one of the first coins I purchased off E-Bay a few years ago for $180. It sold for $920. I bought it as an MS65 in a green PCGS holder.

Did anyone win any of those beauties? image

  • I bid over 2K on a PCGS ms67 1942-D Walker, and almost 4K for a 1937-D PCGS ms67, "both" with gorgeous original color that I thought would win the coins! But not today!!!image

Just when I thought there was some softness developing in the toned market, this sale happens and reinforces the high levels for really nice material. Those "special" coins are still commanding "special" prices!

Yah, I was HUNTING for something to buy in the toned Morgans. All went for about 20-40% more than I wanted to pay. There's a lot of nice stuff to be had elsewhere for lesser prices than were realized at Heritage this week.

I don't see any softness in the overall market. There may be sporatic examples and/or "flukes", but
the quality coins with great eye appeal are a universal constant regardless of anything that may go on in a particular Heritage sale or a large show environment. I think after looking at your array of Morgans today, I am convinced that your coins were in demand yesterday, today, and tommorrow. Quality is a constant.
  • I believe the toned Morgan market is alive and well. I bought and sold quite a few at the show so far.

  • Morganluver,

I agree with your assessment...the really pretty toned dollars were extremely strong in the Heritage sale today. I got blown out on coin after coin such as lot # 8747 (a PCGS MS66 1880-S) that sold for $3,400 -- or, lot # 8815 (a PCGS MS66 1882-S) that was hammered down at $2,000! However, I did win the wildly toned ICGS MS66 1902-O dollar.

Wow! $1200 for a Roosie! I have to look that one up!

Yes Wingedliberty, et al, the desire for quality toned coins has not seem to have waned, in fact, it seems alive and well. And the hunt goes on! image

Morganluver, I followed a few nicely toned Proof Indian Cents at the Heritage Auction-- how about $4370.00 for an 1883 1c NGC PR67BN, or $5290.00 for a 1907 1c NGC PR67BN! Nothing soft about those prices!

  • The toned morgan markey seems to have a following all it's own seperate from the rest of us that don't really get into that. The overall market can go up, down, or sideways, but morgan lovers don't care!!!

If I could go back in time and know what I know now, I would buy every bagg toned morgan clean enough to go 64 or higher slab em in 86 hold em till 2003 and then start selling them at Heritage signature sales a handfull at a time, can you say CHA CHING!!!!!!

Not my cup of tea paying 20 or 30 x bid for colored morgans, but they sure are pretty !!! Of course Franks blue monster spoiled me for all time on the rest of them cause I never saw one I wanted more.

I don't think the toned coin market is down at all. Maybe it's just now beginning to slide down a little from the peak, that's all. I do think it will slide a bit further down, as a backlash effect from some of the crazier, fadlike aspects of the current toning craze. The bubble is bound to burst a bit. But it ain't burst yet, and it's doubtful it will ever completely burst, as some of the better stuff will always be in strong demand.

Both toned dollars referred to by Mike (Coingame2000) were originally sold out from the "Toned Dollar Collection" offered by the Goldbergs 2 years ago. The piece that just realized $3910 with the juice sold therein for a little less than $750, which means the new owner earned a 425% rate of return over the intervening period. This piece also appeared in Heritage's Signature sale shortly before this year's ANA show, where it failed to reach the owner's reserve price.

At this weekend's Beaumont Texas local coin show I bought 2 two-sided toned Morgans for $25 each, but don't have photos of them to post yet...

Both are in PCI MS-63 slabs (I know that I should be flogged and scolded for being so naughty). But they were so pretty and so reasonably priced that I just had to have them.

One's an 1879-P in a green 10 digit PCI holder that's quite pretty which I paid an MS-60 price for (low downside risk) with satiny contrast between devices & field. If it happens to really be a 63 I got it at half of bid, however if it's a 64 it could be worth 4x what I paid -- who cares, it's a pretty, common date Morgan... The other's a gorgeous fully struck 1883-O with partially PL surfaces in a PCI gold holder (really naughty of me).

Both of these coins are beautifully naturally toned on both sides with browns reds & blues.

I really appreciate the fact that alot of collectors eschew the PCI slabbed coins, because that leaves some low hanging fruit for me to purchase at bargain basement prices. One can ususally purchase PCI slabbed MS-63's for an MS-60 price, and feel comfortable as long as you can tell an Unc from an AU Morgan.

This hobby can be alot of fun for not alot of dollars!
