my thoughs on key and semi key mercury dimes

I think that I would love to have the keys and semi-keys in a high AU58. I have a few AU58's that look better than some MS64FB dimes out there.image

These are just my thoughs

looking for others to compare

I agree,in fact if I had to do it all over again,I would collect nothing but AU58;s.That grade is very subjective? Or best grade for the bucksimage.Al

I had a short adventure with AU58 coins. The thing that stuck out was the vast difference that can be seen within the grade. Some of the coins were knockouts, usually the tougher dates, and some were down right ugly dogs and I'm not talking about a Full Blooded dog but a Street Mutt. Usually these Street Mutts were the common date coins. The AU's were tough to come by and the reason for this is that people that submit these coins are not looking for AU58 coins but are looking for the Mint State grade. When the AU comes back the cracking tools come out quickly. If you could make your own 58's that would be the way to go but again who will sell you the coin at AU58 money. Some people would I think but most would hold out for the Mint State money that they think the coin warrants.

Along the line that AL stated. I think if the set was started over the grade I would be after is MS64FB or NB with a killer MS65 NB coin thrown in from time to time.

Back to the AU58 grade. I really think the best looking 16D I have ever seen was a AU58. I am still implanting my foot too the rear most portion of the body for not buying the coin. Whats worse is the dealer reminds me about the coin every darn time I see him. Usually at least twice while we talk coins.

I have a 1917-D (I think it was a d it been at pcgs so long i really forgot) at PCGS looks like a MS63FB (strong bands) that I believe it just may be AU58 because of a few slide marks on the cheek from the book it was in.

I will let all know when it comes back

Sometimes those 58 look better than higher grades. I wouldn't mind if could find 58s to finish off the set.

  • I have some of the varieties in lower grades (VF-35, VF-30, AU-50) and like them just as much, if not better, than some of my higher grade ones. image

It really is subjective - many AU-58's are indeed super and many, and I mean many as Ken pointed out are indeed mutts - I personally prefer 64FB or higher - but I also know although it may seem like I could I doubt if I will ever be able to afford a 16-D in such grades.
On the same wave lengths though for example my 23S is 66 NB, truly superb in every sense, and really really FB but not "obvious" .....although I have had an opportunity to pick up a super 65FB to "upgrade" I don't see parting with this coin at all.
If you really like the coin, and it sits well in your collection - buy it and stand by it image
