Lincoln And Indian Cent Collectors - Opinions Needed!!!!

Will you always get a bodybag from PCGS if the obverse is darker than the reverse on a Mint State copper?? I sent in a 1909VDB that looked natural to me and it came back bodybagged. Then I see the post on the IHC that had been badly dipped that PCGS graded. What gives???

Its on a case by case basis and is without question, not the rule of thumb. The individual merits of the coin are evaluated. I have had many that made it. Its just a question of degree and the merits of the characteristics of the whole coin.

When the ob is darker, it's a bit of a red flag, but not necessarily a BB. Agree with Brian.

  • Why would PCGS think artificial color if the reverse is darker???

Can't really answer that question without seeing the coin or at a minimum , the scan.
  • Thanks Brian. I will try to get a scan tomorrow. I doubt the scan will help though. image

    Great, looking forward to it.
  • I am sorry but I am very new at this. What exactly is a body bag? I read this forum to learn. I thank you all for putting your opinions on here.

A bodybag is a type of "ziplock" plastic bag that a grading service returns a coin in when they feel it is unsuitable for grading. This could be for a number of reasons, including artificial alterations, counterfeits, artificial toning, harsh cleaning/and or whizzing. etc, not all services do this. PCGS and NGC are the most reputable, ANACS will notate on the holder, the problem , the others you should stay away from.
  • If the coin was an album coin it may have a darker or lighter reverse. So the answer to your first question is no. I have coins that are like this now.
  • I own and have seen hundreds of Lincoln cents. The color on this particular coin is natural. On the obverse and reverse. The bodybag decision really bothers me!!! image
