Lincoln collectors speak up...

I have noticed that the Merc dime collectors (Mercateers) seem to know each other well and are having a good time with their registry sets and friendly competition. I know very few Lincoln collectors and would like to get to know some others that share collecting interests. I'll start...My set is under J. K. Cumming collection, I started about 6 months ago and would like to complete a 100% red set in MS65 or above (except 26-S).

  • Hi,

    J.K.

Nice set, and nice photos!! Really appreciate those. You have some beauties, and a discriminating eye!

I'm glad you made the post. Us Lincoln collectors talk among one another, but don't seem to have as much interaction going on the Boards as the merc guys. I like my fellow Lincoln collectors, though. They've been very helpful, both with providing coins I've needed, and with KNOWLEDGE. Lots of savvy people collect this series.
  • JTK - I've been collecting for about 5 years now. I collect all kinds of LINCOLNS. Only Lincolns. I'm into the OMM's, RPM's, DDO's, MS (both early and late), some proofs. Love the series. My sets are listed under OnRutton.

  • Roger,
Don't worry about the Memorials, they just don't excite me.

    Dpoole,
Thanks for the comments. I'd like to learn how to photograph my coins, but just don't have the time. I agree, photos are great. I really like the photos posted by shylock of some really high end Lincolns.
  • Lincolnsence,
Thanks for posting. I think it would be fun if more Lincoln collectors had more interaction on these boards.
  • "...My sets are listed under OnRutton."

Is this the first OFFICIAL time "out of the closet" (not that there's anything wrong with that image )? image

"I think it would be fun if more Lincoln collectors had more interaction on these boards"

Do you really think we could stand more? image

    "Roger,
Don't worry about the Memorials, they just don't excite me."

Do I look "worried"? imageimageimage - But seriously, all the best to you. image

I've been known to buy and sell a Lincoln every so often. I'm considering putting together my own 09-58 MS set...for the third time. In the meantime I'm always trying to help some of the other Lincoln guys out with their sets.

    JTK,

I'm from MN (and my parents still live there)...I try not to go back there too often (especially in the winter) but would be happy to get together and work on some pictures of your coins next time I get up that way.

  • I collect Lincoln Cents!! image Yes!! I started collecting Lincoln Cents this year. I'm trying to do a Short Set 1930 - 1958 in MS66RD. I'm saving them for my niece who is 1 1/2 years old now. I hope to have it knocked down by Jan 1, 2005. Wish me luck!! image
BTW, Who will bet I won't go for earlier dates upon completion??? image

  • More communication is good. I'm only a "very small" Lincoln collector, wheat back proofs from 1950 to 1959. And make them cameo/dcam. The link is below, along with some of my other favorite sets. Take a look.

Most of the Lincoln Cent collectors here know each other. Or at least in the back of my mind, I'd like to think it. I have noticed the healthy competition between the merc guys. I think the cent guys tend to be a little less competition driven and more encourageative (is there such a word?). Dont get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a nice healthy competition, but in the end, there can only be one set on top. And let's face it, when we collect at the level that most of us are, we're all winners when the set is done.

  • I was a Lincoln collector until today. (sniff..sniff) I just sent all of my Lincolns to Heritage for the FUN show. Hopefully they will show up in some of your collections!! I've spent WAY too much money on my Franklins and I need to pay up!! I will always love this series as they were the first coins I ever collected and I paid for my first car with my first set.

    Good Luck. I'll be watching!!

Competition between Merc folks.....No Way. We just like each other and try to help each other if possible. Most of the upgrade and addition stuff is a throw back to Rules we made a couple of years ago so when a New Coin is found it must be posted on this forum.

I still miss Red Friday though. That was the best thing the Merc folks had fun with.

Lincolns were the first coin I collected, starting when I was 6 years old. It was 1955, and the local dealer told my parents and me that the San Francisco mint was closing, and that "S" mint coins would become valuable. Over the next few years, I branched into other series, pulled from circulation, but still liked Lincolns best. When I got my first job and could afford to buy coins, MS Lincolns were the first coins I bought. I liked the variation in colors that could be found on mint state ("BU" back then), and bought all of the nice early dates I could find. I seldom found any from Denver or San Francisco. At one point I had over 150 coins from 1909-1933 - all nice red uncs. I've sold some over the years, but kept the best ones. I never had any of them certified until this year, and am waiting for a few mintmarked coins to come back from PCGS. BU rolls were cheap, too, and I bought many of them. Some of those have been sold, too, but I still have over 50 rolls from 1935-1958. I should cherrypick them, and have any potential MS67's slabbed. I hate to break up rolls, but they take up a lot of space in the safe deposit boxes, and they're heavy.

As for the Registry, the 1909-1958 set is just too expensive for me to attempt now. I might try a 1934-1958 MS set if it existed in the Registry. I've got every date from 1928-1958 raw, but that's a heck of a lot of coins to be slabbed, not to mention a lot of $$$. So I ended up going after the proof wheat cents from 1936-1958. Below is a photo of a 1942 in an old holder that I think would be a CAM. I've posted a different photo before, but this one is more true to life. There is a second '42 that's a twin to this coin. Do you Lincoln experts think it's a CAM?

    Mike:
"and just like one other reply-er i also collect all the omm's rpm's doubled dies and every lincoln variety i can find...only lincolns though my coins are listed every which way that pcgs allows."

Same here but not all yet. As many know I do have a special interest in the business strike & proof double dies of 1960 & 1971.

"I also listed my totally pcgs proof set with ngc (just to tick em off) i'm warped that way (by the way my set is ngc's #1 set...aint that a hoot!"

I did the EXACT same thing. BTW, you are #1 but someone's right on your tail: link imageimageimage
  • Cocoinut,
Yes, that is a nice frosty 1942. I can't read the mirrors, but I give it a good shot at cameoimage There are a number of frosty 1942 pennies. I have four, one in an NGC Cameo holder and the other three in older PCGS holders like yours. They are special and finding them is a distinct thrill. Congratulations!

7 years ago I used to buy Lincolns from the "flea market guy "
Then 3 years ago I found this board. I found out that I owned a bunch of 63-64 rd common dates, full of carbon spots.
    image

I started to buy PCGS slabs. Not just Lincolns but anything I could find that I liked.
I bought about 20 Franklins , some Mercs , some Modern Proofs.
Finally I went to Lincolns only. I started selling all my circulated raw coins on E-bay.
I needed more cash for my Lincoln fix. I sold my PCGS Mercs , then the Moderns.
Last but not least my Franklins went.
I found my love- Pre 1930 Philly Lincolns, in as high a grade in Red as I can afford.
I have shallow pockets, image So I try to get the grade I can afford , before the next big price jump.
Thanks to some great folks on this board I have learned alot !
    Memorials , don't do them....
    Oh yea great icon !

I'm a Lincoln Man, started a Lincoln Man...I'll finish a Lincoln Man, But I'm starting to think about a Type set for variation. I have Many branches but my main collection is the Lincolns. Most Pricey one I have is the 1958-D MS67RD oldest (Slabbed) is the 1935 I believe (I've been away from them for over 6 months... image

    I've been feining for months!

  • Wow, that '42 is the kind of Lincoln I like!

I am a type collector. So I butt my head in wherever I can image I like all coins, but cameo proofs are special to me.
  • Thanks for all the replies. I hope to meet all of you someday. I am hoping to get a chance to go to the FUN show, maybe some of us could meet up then.

    Jack-

I'll be at FUN. It'd be neat for the Lincoln wackos to get together there! We'll plan something as we get closer... image
  • dpoole,
we'll work something out to meet at FUN if I get the green light to go.

    Fairlaneman,
I wasn't implying that the competition was unfriendly in anyway. I think a little friendly competition makes it fun. What is Red Friday? I think it would make things interesting if we had similar "rules" about posting new and interesting aquisitions.

    Rella,
I live in Orono, MN, which is a western suburb of Minneapolis. I work at Hennepin County Medical Center.
  • here is a 1942 and 1939 I just picked up, I think it has a pretty good chance at crossing at pcgs. I love lincoln wheat proofs, especially when they are cameo

  • Nice coins RD5425. What's the grade on the 39? A little tough on the picture to predict, but the 42 looks pretty clean and I would agree that it probably has a shot at crossover.
  • the 1939 is a ngc pf64. I'm hoping it will get a cam at pcgs, I'm pretty sure it will because pcgs is a looser on cam designations than ngc.
  • KAJ1,
Pretty 1918 cent, nice and clean.
  • Hi everyone! To KAJ1, Go Red Sox! Nice 1918, I think of the Red Sox anytime I see any 1918 coin!

Anyway, I collected coins from age 7-14 or so. I started one day when I was bored and my dad said why don't you look through this jar of pennies and see how many different dates you can find. Soon after my grandfather gave me a jar of wheat cents saved from circulation, and I wanted to put together a full set. I was maybe 25 coins short (and needed all keys of course). Once I started going to coin stores I got hooked on Indian Head Cents and then type coins. I wanted to buy Lincolns I needed but usually found a nice type coin instead.

At age 23 (I'm 25 now) I got interested in coins again and decided to put together that complete set I always wanted to do. I actually was going to do a VF and better entire small cent set, with a yearly budget of only $1000 (since I'm still a student (math Ph.D) with a small income). After finishing a 1934-2003 BU set, and looking at lots of earlier dates, I decided to concentrate on Lincoln's only and go for a MS set and spend a bunch of savings from summer jobs and such (I realized it would at the least be a pretty safe investment). I keep increasing my min grade... first from ms60 to ms63rb, then to mostly ms64rd with a few mostly red 64rb's). It's fun to register my pcgs graded ones in the registry (titled Lincoln Cents, 61st presently I think) but I have no plans to finish a registry set. Everything I have 1934-2003 is raw but I've been continuously upgrading and trying to complete that set in coins of ms66 quality (Boy the late 70's are tough, I may have to break down and buy a few slabbed ones). I love the memorials too and think of them as part of a complete Lincoln Cent set, 242 coins by my count. I now hope I never have to sell any Lincoln Cents, but if the day comes that I need the money (say towards a house or something), I will only sell the more common dates or coins more average for the grade, and save the few really excellent PQ early mintmarked coins I've had the luck of finding. Surely that will be a good start towards a new set someday!
  • KAJ1KAJ1 Posts: 773 ✭✭✭
The 1918 is a very nice coin !
That nick under the chin will hold it back from a 66.

I wish I was going to FUN !!!!!

    haletj,

I do the same thing when I see 1918. I think that about 1912 also.
(that's when Fenway was built. Also the year of the Titanic. )

  • I collect Lincoln's as well. I really enjoy the hard work and excitement of making my own coins. Most of my collection ("Clackamas River Colelction" and the "Lower Clackamas River Collection"), were made raw by me. I probably spent more doing it this way but I can sure grade now image.

Welcome, Stewart. There's lots of help for newbies on these Boards. You collect anything else? image
  • dpoole,
I just saw your reply to Stewart...gave me a chuckleimage
  • haletj,
Thanks for the post. Reading it made me think about my story and I really must offer some advice.

I started collecting as a boy as well. Then, I gave it up for a few years during High school and college to chase girls. I started collecting again when I was in Medical School and had built a pretty nice collection, including the pop. 1 1919-S in 66RD. Well, as I finished residency, money was short and I was just starting my practice. My wife and I found a house we really liked and next thing I knew my coins were on the auction block. I'm now back at it and regret, in a huge way, ever selling those coins.

So, when I read in your post "I now hope I never have to sell any Lincoln Cents, but if the day comes that I need the money (say towards a house or something)", I found myself screaming "Don't do it!"

    Think long and hard.

    i also collect lincoln cents

Stewart. That has to be the understatement of the day. Hey, I was wondering. I have a certified collection, and a circ raw set that I add too here and there. Do you work on just the one set? Or do you dabble in another, lesser prestegious Lincoln set?

    Just wondering,
    David
  • Thanks for the advice John. I think I've heard about your story about your 19-s before on these boards. Yep, once I realized how rare nice looking coins are of some dates, I realized how lucky I am that I have such a nice 14-d,17-s,19-s,21-s and now a 26-s. Those 5 coins I won't sell or at least not for a long long time!

BTW David I'm trying to finish my circ set too, but I just can't bring myself to buy another s-vdb. I just want to keep the money available in case a nice ms coin I need shows up.
  • Welcome. You can find my Lincoln sets listed under Zaniewski. A change in work responsibilities has kept me from being extremely active, lately. I've not listed a 1909-1958 or early proofs set. I've been quietly working on both via my own submissions and will list them some day when they reach about 75% complete in reds. I ocassionally attend shows in the southeast US, time permitting.

My next challenges are to image all my Memorials and Proofs, then uplink the pics and make a PR68DCAM 1971 Lincoln. I wonder which will happen first image

  • Thanks for posting. Are you attending the FUN show this year? I am hoping to organize a gathering of Lincoln collectors.

I have that problem too. I have the circ set finished except for the SVDB. There's nothing special in the set. Most are F-VF. I had some cash set asside for the next show that I was going to use for an SVDB. Then I bought three MS cents for my slabbed collection. Now, I'm coin-moneyless again.

  • Check out the Kingswood auction (Orleans sale) at B&M's page. Things are getting out of control and there are still over 4 hours left of bidding.

which genius has bid $1,650 for a 1951 s in ms 67 red? Ahhh

    It's all Gerry's fault

My prediction is Lincoln cents have not as yet peaked

    Stewart
  • It's absolute mayhem over at the Orleans sale in the Lincoln dept.!!!!

  • I'm starting to wonder if it isn't all Gerry's fault.
  • There are some real dogs at the auction. That 21-S is a 62RB not a 64RD. The 51-S is a nice PQ coin but that is a common enough coin. A couple of hundred would be more reasonable.
  • Just passing through and I thought I would say hello to all the fellow Lincoln collectors.image
