Question about baggies

I'm sure "several" of you long-time collectors will know the answer to this, but it's something that got me to thinking the other day when I dropped a bunch of coins off at the safe deposit box.

Are baggies, the thin sandwich type and ziplocs okay for coins or do they contain PVC or other harmful "stuff"? I noticed that I had a bunch of coins stored loose in baggies in the box, and several silver mini-bars with different things on 'em, like snowmen, etc. On of the mini-bars was just wrapped in a cut up baggie and then had a piece of tape holding it together, and where it was really obvious the air could freely flow in (or at least make easy contact) with the silver, it had "toned" quite a bit in just a year.

Now mind you, before I get get flamed, some of the loose coins I did put in baggies, but that was only AFTER receiving some from a dealer that way, and the mini-bar I mentioned above, came that way from a dealer....

Thanks all.
Bill Ferguson

I doubt that they'd have anything like PVC... the FDA wouldn't approve them.

PVC is toxic, so all plastic which may come in contact with food is required not to contain any PVC.

    Hey, that's good to know.

Bill, at first I misread your title and thought you had a question on bagpipes. LOL image

Though I am of highland descent, I doubt I could have answered any bagpipe questions, either.

But I'm pretty sure they don't have any PVC in 'em. Wool, maybe. Or leather. image

That's good one.... Bagpipes... Leave to you to add a little levity to a thread. I reckon my clan is from somewhere over there also, though I haven't been able to trace them across the pond yet. I'm stuck at pre-RW Virginia, about 15 years before the war.

Thanks for the rest of the information also guys, so in a nutshell, I guess baggies are okay (though not preferred) to keep coins in? None of 'em are really valuable, just the average silver coin from circulation.

I think zip-lock bags with a desiccant are a great way to go.

  • What about the "little" ziplocs that are sold? They come in all diff. sizes, and I got some for my crafts. image

Yeah, I got some at the craft store, too. They're great. Made for beads and stuff.

Trouble is, when you go to buy 300-400 of the things, the cashier looks at you funny, and whispers something about "crack rock baggies" to her coworker, when you leave... image

You want those for COINS, huh, buddy? Yeah, suuuuure!
