Which 60's Baseball are Hot? and Not?

Guys,

I'm having more and more trouble coming up with 72's that I still need and am trying to figure out which set to focus my attention on during the 60's. I'm looking for another 500+ card set where the prices seem to be cold on eBay. I'd also like to hear your thoughts on which sets are outrageously expensive at the moment. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Do NOT go for 1964... prices are really hot with singles going for around $120 in PSA 9.

    Thanks Kalch for clarifying.

I'm looking at 8's and 9's and depending on the set, I'll probably be looking at a projected GPA between 8.10 and 8.50.

  • Frank,

No question about it--1968. 8's are almost always cheap and so are 9's in many instances. 1961 is tough with a lot of competition --Rob is the expert there. In terms of difficulty and cost in assembling a set between 8.1 and 8.5, and passing on 1969 as I do not collect it from easiest to hardest I would rank them as follows:

    1968
    1965
    1964
    1967
    1966
    1963
    1960
    1962
    1961

I would stay away from the 1962 Topps set as it is very difficult. Many of the cards have PD problems. Not to mention that Chris Renaua? and Steve Eberhardt is going after the set really hard. As far as a cold set in the 1960's I would probably go after 1968. I have had some PSA 8's sell for nothing and I have bought many nice raw examples. I believe you could go after that set pretty aggressively and do it with real success.

  • I agree 68 is the way to go for 8's and 9's . Good Luck!

  • Other than a handful of low pop commons, 1963's can be had for very reasonable prices. Maybe the colored borders scare people away. But 1968 is the slam dunk easiest IMO.

Just stay the -bleep- away from 1965 until I finish.image
  • I would second Davalillo's post on degree of difficulty, except that I would flip-flop 1960 ahead of 1963.

I also would agree that 1968 is the way to go if the object is merely to assemble at best cost. However, I also believe that 1968 will bring the smallest gross sales price of any Topps set from the 60's, as there are a huge number of high grade specimens out there. Personally, I like that. image

12-20 per card with some low pops in the 25-50
