Merc registry guys

I'm getting back a 1921 mercury dime back from PCGS in AU50 should I put it in my registry set set, or only put MS coins in my set?

    Hi PT,

I would put it in my set if I were you. I have several AU coins in my set. I hope to eventually upgrade them to MSFB dimes, but they make nice attractive placeholders until then and still carry significant weight in the registry. Congratulations by the way. What did you think it would grade before you sent it in?

    Pat:

Put it in. Why wouldn't you? I have an AU 1917 dime in my set. It was one of the first coins I purchased when I was collecting in the 1960s. Eventually I'll replace it but in the meanwhile it belongs in my set. Similarly, your AU50 1921 also belongs in your set. image

By all means put it in the set. Tough date and really there is nothing wrong with AU coins. MASVHO.

Just a thought. Are the coins that are not Mint State really Registry Quality ? This is a Elite place we frequent.

    Just curious. image

Definitely enter it in your set. I doubt that many of us will be able to put MS 16-D's in our sets, but will opt for circulated coins instead. A '21 or any other date should be perfectly acceptable in circ grades; they just won't carry as many points in the Registry as MS coins, and sets will be ranked accordingly.

when I get home tonight I will put the 1921 dime in my set. My plan is to, someday in the futher, have a completly MS collection. Way in the futher, unless I hit the lottery BIG timeimage

    Hey Ken,

That's a good one! You know I don't care if some of my coins are circulated, I know my pockets aren't deep enough to keep up with the "Elite." LOL image

I look a this place to have some fun. If we put in some circ place holders--who cares! image

    Hey Tony

You did see the Smiley. Just was wondering what some of the others thought. From the replys to Pats 21P it looks as though everyone thinks it is a Registry Coin. I can go along with that also.

I wonder if the same responses would come up if the coin was a 44D or something real common. Basically I think if a person likes a coin put it in reguardless of the grade. Probably more sets would be registered if we could dis-spell the idea that a coin or coins must be Mint State to join in the fun.

    Ken,

Yes of course I saw the smiley. I was thinking of a thread from long ago about the elite or snobs or something like that . image

I had a 1923-S in VF 35 as a place holder for about six months--nobody said a thing about it! I think most of us are here for the fun. image

I WOULD BE SURPRISED IF ANYONE MENTIONED AN IOTA OF A COMMENT IN REGARD TO ANYONE ADDING CIRCS TO HIS/HER SET. MOST HERE ARE ON FOR FUN - THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ADDING A 21 IN CIRC - REMEMBER HOW WE DROOLED ABOUT THAT DATE IN "ANY" GRADE WHEN WE WERE KIDS???
HECK IF IT MAKES YOU HAPPY ADD A 44D IN VG10image - WHATEVER IT TAKES TO HAVE SAFE CLEAN FUN IS FINE - AND SEEMINGLY FINE FOR ALL HERE image

It seems like it is easier to up grade than looking for just the one you like and need. I wasn't looking for this dime it just came available when I didn't expect it.

    I agree Pat,

I have upgraded more than half of the coins in my set, some twice! It seems much easier to upgrade because on the upgrade I am more patient, plus I can sell my upgraded coin to offset some of the cost. I will continually upgrade my set as funds allow and Mercs I like become available. I figure to put another 10 years into this set. I am looking at 3 upgrades right now. They won't move me up, but they will make me happy, and that is really all that matters! imageimage

Speaking of upgrades. When you say upgrade do you mean a higher grade or just a coin you like better ? My last 3 upgrades, shown in the set, have all been the same grade but just a coin I like a little better than the previous coin. Heck I think one was a downgrade, number wise, but PCGS said it was a upgrade. Guess they know that they put some darn nice coins in lower numbered slabs. image

    Just curious again.

Off to the Heritage Auction to see if another upgrade is won. image

I never gave a thought of someone being considered the "elite" regardless were they stand in #'s .Collect what you can afford, who cares if it's a lowley AU or XF,as long as you are having fun, that's what counts.Al
