David Lawrence is a Class Outfit!

dpooledpoole Posts: 5,940 ✭✭✭✭✭
Awhile back, I called and ordered a coin from their website on approval. They said they'd send it Fed Ex.

After about a week I hadn't seen it, so I emailed, asking what had happened. I got an email back from Mary Lee, telling me that they'd sent the coin out Registered Mail instead, and she was sorry.

No big deal. I got the coin the next day.

Today, I got in the mail a beautiful hard copy of "100 Greatest U.S. Coins", with a note of apology from Mary Lee about the shipping error! Is that unbelievable?

Ironically, I didn't like the coin and had sent it back today. image

I called Mary Lee to thank her, but had to leave a message, because they're closed in anticipation of Isabel.

Anyhow, wasn't that gesture first class? I've never had a bad experience with David Lawrence. image

dpoole: I recently purchased a an 1878-CC Morgan and a beautifully chocolate brown deep evenly toned AU-55 Seated Liberty 1847 Dollar from them, and appreciated Jack describing both coins to me over the phone to help me discern details that were difficult to fully interpret from the online photo.

They are a class outfit, and I plan to order from them again in the future.

I ordered a coin and they sent me the wrong one. I had to pay to ship it back to them.
    Great folks.

Placid: If they sent you the wrong coin (their mistake) I would have asked them to cover return shipping charges.

I'm assuming that you asked them and they refused??

Just don't return too many coins. They will cut you off. I know, it happened to me.

Yes I asked, I also asked if they could cross ship the right coin and they refused.
They also kept the right coin for sale on their web site until after they got the wrong one back after telling me they would be sure to hold it for me.

That seems strange. I've never heard a bad thing about them. You are talking about David Lawrence, aren't you?

David Lawrence has to be one of the better large volume coin dealers to deal with in my opinion. Their web site features a large variety of material, photographs are above average, customer service is competent and friendly, they notify you when your purchase ships and optionally you can keep track of your transactions if you join their members club. For items that have been in inventory for awhile, they will entertain an offer below the listed price. Their grading system based on strike and color is another plus. Not aware of anyone else who provides these services. Prices are generally competitive to boot.

They have shipped the wrong coin and D. L. picked up the shipping charges both ways.

I would definitely like to know of other large volume non-specialty dealers who provide similar service.

Sorry to hear that -- I would be unhappy too. Even great dealers can't get it right all the time, I guess.

Have made a good number of purchases from DL and have each and every time been very happy with both the service and the coins. My biggest complaint is that they seem to be going more towards stocking NGC coins which don't fit my PCGS registry sets.

Bustman is right. DL does not like returns and many of their coins are just generic slabbed stuff.

Too many shiny coins for my tastes but I have heard good things about him.

    dpoole,
After being shafted by Coast to Coast, someone here on the boards suggested David Lawrence Rare Coins. I just purchased my 6th PCGS graded Morgan from them. It was a 1881-S on sale but you
could make a bid. I asked for $10 off the sale price and they accepted.
I love their website. You can usually get a pretty good photo of the coin you're interested in.
Sofar, no problems and I recommend them highly.

I've purchased from them a few times. Very friendly people, quality coins, and I'd highly recommend them. Their photos sometimes are a little blah when compared to the coins in hand, especially on the toners. Their photos generally seem less vivid than the coins. And yes, they do have a lot of generic material too.

I dealt with a Jack Robinson there and was terribly dissapointed. I deal with him on four different occasions. The first three were phenomenal. The last one was horrific and I will never deal with them again. I was exceedingly dissapointed and turned off by the last time.

Great coins, but their shipping is pretty high. Especially when I buy the lower-priced items, it adds a good percentage to the total.image

I have purchased from them several times and have been very pleased with each transaction.

they won't wheel & deal, & to put it bluntly, they get rude if you ask too many questions. maybe they do have class - if your buying slabs by the number. but have they ever helped you attribute a die variety? or trace the pedigree (?!) of a large cent? or discuss striking anomalies?

just saying their not my kind of outfit, glad you've had good luck w/ em.

Four or five coins have been bought from them. No problems with the coins at all. I will say that a less than pleasurable selling experience was had with them. Called and talked to a person on the phone and asked if they were interested in some coins. At that time they had very few NGC coins on thier site. Well most were NGC slabbed Mercs and a real low ball offer was given. I passed and had to eat the shipping charge to them which they said they would pick up if the offer was refused. Water under the bridge now but other Web Sites are checked before them.

I sold my collection of ef-au barber dimes to the old man maybe 20 yrs ago and got a fair offer. And recently traded a box of PCGS Franklins to them for a great VF 1896-S quarter. Even though they already had a fairly stagnant inventory of slabbed Franklins, the offer they made for my coins was very reasonable. (Of course, they were for the most part PQ, being my coins and allimage.

And contrary to what some have said here, I have found they are quite willing to "wheel and deal", even on items that are not listed with the "make an offer" logo.

I've been working with them on a deal this past week. It isn't finished yet, but so far I'm happy with the responses I've got.

Frankly, they are not my favorite dealer.

I bought a number of coins from them and sold them a few. Mostly satisfactory transactions. They do not like returns, and told me once I would have to start reimbursing them for postage.

Once I called to offer a PCGS graded PR68 mercury dime at at price about 20% below where they were offering another equally difficult date. The sales person was rude. They did not want to talk about the coin, they would not give me an idea of where I could sell it, they did not want to see it, or take it on consignment. It seemed like a strange way to handle a customer who was looking to sell a high end coin.

Several months ago, a member complained that they DKed an order because they misquoted the price. They didn't even notify him. Seems like they misquoted by about $500 on a $1,500 coin. The thing is that the sales person had the coin in hand, and took a credit card number. The member just never got it, and calling back a week later was told the deal was off at the agreed upon price.

Most dealers I know will eat those mistakes. The owner of David Lawrence replied on that thread, that they as a policy do not have to eat mistakes, and can break deals where they make a sell at a price in error.

Having said all that, they are probably OK, but there are better dealers out there. They do not make my short list.

oh sure, i know that, they will wheel & deal from exorbitantly inflated prices all the way down to very inflated prices.

Typetone-- If that is true, (about them requesting postage reimbursement on returns) then that is absolutely outrageous! I dont recall ever returning one of their coins... but if I did return a few and one of them told me THAT, I would probably go to Virginia Beach and show them what a REAL hurricane was like!

    Bushmaster:

You know if a dealer fairly describes a coin, and I just don't like it, I often do reimburse postage. However, being told that I was returning too much when it was only a few coins, didn't strike me right. On balance, they are OK, but I prefer to dealer with dealers that seem to really want my business, and who go out of their way to help and act friendly, and make fair offers for my trade-ins. Maybe they have too many customers to be able to give the personal touch. With all the quality acts out there like Pinnacle, Legend, RCNH and Whitlow, I have plently of better choices to go to first. Buying expensive coins is like buying art or diamonds. You want to be treated like you are important and special (even if you aren't). Some dealers do it that way.

DLRC have positioned themselves over the past few years to cater to the "collectors'. While they do post some real high end rare coins from time to time, I believe John would rather serve the masses with more generic coins. I was taken by surprise when they told me they would not ship any more coins because I return too many. I suggested that instead of cutting me off, maybe they do a little pre-screening before they ship the coin. They thought it was a good idea and were willing to give it a try. After rejecting a few pre-screened coins that they sent, it became clear to me that my tastes had matured and that it was time for me to move on.

dlrc is to coins what mc-donalds is to hamburgers, except just higher margins. i guess there's nothing wrong w/ 'em, but sooner or later, you hopefully outgrow 'em.

LOL, sometimes karl your direct comments are a little too much and off base with my experience. How many coins have you purchased from them? I purchased two classic coins from them after carefully watching the auctions for them for months. I paid substantially less for the coins then I would have at auction and they are both PQ coins. I wonder where you get this McDonalds comparison. On both coins they dealt with me fairly on the price and sent the coins out for approval.

I might add, I had been looking for these coins for a long time. Also their prices for IHC's seem to be very much in line with other internet coin dealers. Karl I think you have eaten one too many egg mcmuffins. image
