Electric Eye - As I stated, no "decision" to shut down the boards was made and a CU rep. made it clear today that the message boards would not be shut down. But, I believe it was "considered" (perhaps even dismissed immediately as a possibility(?), but considered). And, in my opinion, the constant negative threads regarding PCGS is at the heart of it, which is why I made the suggestions I did. And, upon reading the comments of board members here, I tend to now agree the taking of credit card information would likely not make sense. But, PCGS actually knowing the identity of all posters with some certainty is necessary I believe.

<< <i>A silly thread last night when it was created. It is still a silly thread. Everyone should know that PCGS is commited to these Forums. Greg Marguli and JadeCoins, both, had their names disclosed and that did nothing to avoid those situations >>
dcamfranklin's totally right. absurd to think failure to disclose personal information would be a reason to shut down the boards
<< <i>As long as they continue to benefit the community and PCGS, we'll keep them up. >>
I think there MAY be some disscusion as to whether or not the Boards are a benifit to PCGS as it now stands. Until they improve their customer service it'll continue to be a problem. I'd say it's near 50/50 between good and bad publicity for them. I know as an outsider (I have yet to submit a coin to a grading co) I am concerned about many of the customer service issues that are discussed here. I actually would love to see a site like Numisaddict get 1/2 thetraffic that this one does. No corporate pressure or bias to censure the discussion of COINS, which is why we are all here to begin with.
Listen, if I see a thread where the tone is unsavory to me I don't participate. I've got thick enough skin that whatever insults might get hurled at me in a post bounce right off. After some time on the forum you get to know the folks who's opinions you personally value (doens't mean you always agree with them but you know they've taken the time to reason things out) and respect.
As long as the coin forum is strictly a discussion of coins and the open forum is monitored for profanity and pornography I say let it be an open forum. If someone becomes a major nuisance and their sole purpose is to bash with no positive, educational input (judgment call of moderator) ban them. They may sign on again using different information but the true colors always end up coming out so the moderating and self-moderating will be ongoing.
As far as registering using a credit card is concerned, that's a little extreme especially for the under 18 years old crowd. Maybe verification of a real name, address, e-mail address and telephone number isn't to intrusive to be unacceptable to most people.
The longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice is it possible for an empire to rise without His aid? Benjamin Franklin

does'nt seem to me like that's the issue. i think some people think that because of the jade-boys/norweb fiasco, where it seems like pcgs got slammed left & right in any of half a dozn threads, that's what got some folks riled up into thinking pcgs might dump the boards.
put it another way, a lot of pointed remarks were made about pcgs in the 303-post thread that got banned, plus a couple other threads that got banned. now, paranoid members think pcgs might dump the whole forum because of the negative publicity.
remember the title of the thread "did we get screwed by pcgs" or something like that. i don't pcgs liked the tone of that title, or the ensuing 303 posts.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Leave the Boards just like they are. This is a valuable, educational and marketing resource-- the cyber-coin club available 24/7 on your computer. If people act like idiots on here, then deep-six them-- the vast majority of people have good, interesting things to say. Companies pay huge $$ for focus groups like this!

What does that have to do with these boards? Another who has no clue about the first amendment.
Just read your response to my post and I'm crackin' up. I think you're probably right.
