There are so many good people here like you Lucy and I also like everything that Baley posts for some reason now after he/she was nice to me about my medocre walker Another postive here....aside members and content...the icon looks and graphics feel here leave across the street in the dust What a coincidence...I was just looking for hammered struck fbls in 63/64
You are in fact one of the many reasons I enjoy browsing the forums.
The best thing about it is that it can be so many things to so many different people. I have met some very nice members here, as it seems very easy to find good people here.
This is one of the few places, other than mental asylums and under freeway overpasses, where Franklin collectors can gather without fear of persecution

There are so many to list, I'll try to limit it to 3.
(1) When I first started collecting coins as a kid I was in a coin club that met once a month. That was one of the most exciting days of the month for me. I was able to go to the meetings for about 6 years or so. Although I'd prefer an in-person club, this forum is the next best thing.
(2) The ANA covention this year in Baltimore was one of the best shows I've attended in my 32 years of collecting, in part because I knew several people at the convention from the boards- the were all very nice.
(3) I have been working on my MS franklin set of and on since 1989. Recently I have been able to snag a number of super upgrades from a certain board member that broke up her #12 ranked set. I'd mention her name (initials LB (L---B--); also HK (H--K----), but she likes to keep a low profile.
PS And what Sportsmoderator1 said: This is one of the few places, other than mental asylums and under freeway overpasses, where Franklin collectors can gather without fear of persecution
This is the first place I check in the morning, throughout the day and the last place I'm on at night. We can never physically all be together but this place is a pretty darn close. Experts? None better. I was the only one I knew that had the coin "bug" until I came here. I doubt my interest would have continued as it has without the wealth of information so freely given.

This group is amazing in that after years, so many long-time posters continue to not only just stay around but also offer wonderful insight and passion about collecting. New collectors are quickly welcomed and accepted until they decide differently. Everyone is welcomed the same regardless of what they do as day jobs or the value of the collection. Only attitude and manners, which are things that the individual controls, determines how s/he is treated after they submit a post.
What an eloquent post. My prayers go out to you and your loved ones upon the passing of your Aunt. May she rest in the arm's of the Lord.
I know I am new here but I have been sitting quietly on the sidelines for several months watching this community interract and having done so I feel I can tell you some positives about this community we call CU.
We have a community of individuals brought together by a common bond. A bond wrought by what some would call pieces of metal and what others would call works of art. I have visited many different forums; forums dedicated to the care and feeding of Senegal Parrotts, forums dedicated to those who engage in the pixelated fantasy worlds of Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Games (MMORPG's) and forums dedicated to the taboos of societal conversation: Religion and Politics. This community sets itself apart from others in that it is a community of passionate individuals whom while they may not always agree on everything, are for the most part polite and respectful in their disagreements. It is a community where in one sentence one can say "you're wrong or I don't agree at all," and in the next turn around tell the same person.."That's a beautiful coin...wish I had it!"
You see folks this is a forum that crosses all socio-economic, cultural and religious boundaries. You don't have to be wealthy to collect coins...just have an eye for the precious and a love for beauty, after all one man's pocket change is another man's treasure. There are people here, who in the everyday physical world we live in, might never communicate with each other or even be aware of their shared love of numismatics and yet here in cyberspace we are a large (albeit sometimes dysfunctional) family. It doesn't matter what you have, what you dont have, what you can afford or not...what matters is that a bunch of relative strangers have come together to share a passion they have for shiny baubles that to the rest of the world mean no more than the price of a loaf of bread. In today's society this is a rare thing to have and to belong to and the First Ammendment gives this to us by virtue of the blood and suffering of countless patriots over the last 227+ years.
What is positive about this community is that we can speak our mind, laugh, cry, celebrate, argue and lament together as one big happy family and in the process might actually learn something about that shiny piece of metal clanging in our pocket.
Had the honor of seeing Johnny & June Carter Cash Live in concert many years ago. As class an act as you can imagine. The only other performer that I have personally seen treat his/her audience as well was Merle Haggard. Long stories left out.....
This forum is a terrific place where information is diseminated that does not make it's way into books. There are some books on varieties. There are many books that describe coins to their finest points - ad infinetum. I have not seen nor read any books that allow someone to explore the minds and thought process of both coin dealers and collectors as well as this forum allows.
Lucy, my sympathies on the loss of your aunt. Your positivity is refreshing.
What I find positive about this site is that I can come here, read and learn (from some really experienced and helpful people) and it is all provided free of charge...and I have never given PCGS a dime. But you can bet that when I do decide to submit coins for grading, that they will be the first place I go.
Before coming to these boards I didn't know how to collect coins. It sounds funny, but my ideas about the hobby were very broad and they changed frequently. I've since learned to buy the book before the coin, avoid using my credit card (it's a hobby and shouldn't be a financial hardship), and to lower my shipping costs on eBay auctions . I now have a fairly clear idea on my coin collecting future and am excited that I figured it out at the ripe old age of 25 ! I also really enjoy the emoticons and the most excellent giveaways! Thanks Lucy.
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!
We must all remember that "Freedom Isn't Free" and there is always a price to be paid. Some decide that the price is too high and live under opression because they know no other way and oddly enough find comfort in their situation. At least they know what to expect!! No surprises. Freedom means allowing someone who disagrees with your point of view to express themselves and to not attack them for doing so. I am happy and overjoyed when folks on this forum do just that. Allow another to express themselves and to accept another's opinion. Freedom Isn't Free!!!
The besst thing about these boards is the support we have for each other - witness the Asnooker support over on the Darkside where we have raised a lot of money to help Pat and her husband in her time of need (and bleeding over into the liteside also). Sure, we all have our differences and our disputes, but that is a part of life and a natural thing when you get this many people together - The good thing is that people keep coming back, even after the fights and disagreements.
My prayers for you and yours Hepkitty on the loss of your Aunt.

This is a great place to learn and advance in my collecting. What I enjoy most is seeing the surport for the Military on here, It's great to see the surport we have. Thanks everyone.

Well, there's a lot to cover about what's good. Practically any question can be answered, a wide variety of opinions, a chance for some "lively" banter. For me, the boards are a good learning environment. I've learned loads of stuff so far, and read much more that my brain just couldn't process and properly categorize at the time. Some of what I've learned, I've passed on to my 11 year-old son, piquing his interest in the hobby as well. Sometimes the occasional "flame" thread can be an entertaining diversion when I need/want some chuckles.
This board has been an extremely valuable educational tool for this collector. Some appreciated humor, as in all aspects of life, are also a benefit. My collecting is at a rather lower (cost wise) level. Started collecting in 1960. Went away for a while, no cash. Now that I have a budget, limited at that, I'm back in. But the education....
That's what this board has done for me, educate. Makes me a better informed collector, less likely to be shamed by the Business.
Then there's the drool I get when I see those Beauties that some of the members trot out to share with us all.
I like it here because no one can tell that I'm actually a 900 lb guy that usually sits at my keyboard naked
But seriously folks,
I like the fact that agree or disagree, there will always be fair and honest opinions of coins and coin related topics rendered, when the question is asked in a fair and honest manner. And if not, then there will be a bit of entertainment for the inmates
Edited to say, Thanks pretty kitty for the opportunity to win. Lots of winners when you're around.
Lucy, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. It is a sad time indeed. My son was born a couple of weeks after 09/11/2001, and naturally I spent probably more time than I should have worrying about the world in which we were bringing him into. I have collected for about 28 years, but not really seriously until the last year or so. Like so many others have said, I learn something here everyday. I also really appreciate the humor in so many posts, including yours. BTW - actually words spoken by my little one last night - "Dee Dop Duh Woolah" (okay, okay, only after a chocolate chip cookie bribe). Now, just in case anyone wants to get on my case for trying to kiss up to get a freebie, I would just as soon see it go to a younger collector as well!

"What are you putting that tape on your nose for?" "Exactly."
For a old guy just starting out in collecting coins, I have found the forms a great place to learn from some of the very best in the field. I have found most of the folks very helpful, no matter what I asked about or how dumb I sounded. The few that I have done deal with have always been fair and upright with me, thats the kind of people I like to be known by.. Lucy, I think that coin should go to one of the young kids starting out. So do not enter me; You are one of the reasons the forms are a learning place. Thanks for all you do!! Bob
I am from the old school where a hand shake or your word is a bond that passes judgement on yourself.
This forum has been a great place for me and other newbies to this hobby to learn.
We learn interesting facts about some coins. We learn what to expect from different grading services. We learn about pit-falls we face buying coins either in person or at shows.
There's lots more that could be listed, but the best way I can think of to some it up...
Keep in mind that we ALL started out as new collectors at some point in the past. THAT is where the future of the greatest hobby is. Whatever the age of the new collector, foster the fresh ideas. This forum is getting a lot better at doing that. I can't stress it enough, enjoy the hobby and lit it show. It will rub off onto others!
While I have been an infrequent poster here as of late, I still read the forums on a daily bassis. These forums keep me abreast of the latest changes and I do gain a bit of an insite to the coin market.
On the contrary, I have found this board to have been of the greatest help since I decided to enter this hobby. The few postings that I have made, have all been answered in a professional, polite and knowledgable manner. I thank you all for your help, past present and future!
thanks for the chance. i stay clear of all the pcgs arguments, they have their pros and cons, i have only done one submission, and was satisfied with their service. but the assistance and knowledge gained from the board members on these boards has been great!!!!
Lucy, Thanks for the chance at one of your rockin' Frankies. While all the help and information are a great part of this community, when I think of the positive aspects of it I always come back to all the things many people do on here out of pure selfless generosity. Whether it's a charity auction, a contest for YNs or just an encouraging word to somebody in need, this is a great place to be and always brightens my day. Thanks, Lucy. You Rock, HepKitty!

LUcy, sorry to hear of the passing of your aunt. /// Sept 11th was a somber day even here in Canada and especially for me, an American that is a Canadian resident. I will always remember where I was the day it happened. Anyway, I would like to enter your most excellent giveaway and state that I love the c.u. forums. I can ask for and get some answers to questions I have without being made to feel inadequate in any way and I can also in turn provide the odd answer to some questions and hold giveaways as well as win them. I just like it here.
Earlier in the week following the Jade fiasco some opened threads about what good are the PCGS boards or what does it mean to.....etc. This thread however is from the heart, and so are all the posts above - this thread is what the PCGS FORUM community is all about IMHO. We all know what it truly means for all of us, the often posters and the many sitting quietly members, me included solely for time constraints. Thanks Lucy for the eloquent post - and thanks to all for sharing so much.
Well What to say, I have been on this Forum almost from the inception of it in the beginning, I have seen it grow and grow. I May not have talked alot or have much to say , but If they was to shut this down, I guess a part of my heart and soul would knida wither and grow very dim, For it is the cameraderie, the information, the discussion, and one of the best durn place I have ever had the chance to be, I have seen friends come and go, but this forum has always been here like the (rock of gilbalter). The most positive thing I can say about this forum is the friends you make and the ones that share in your lifes joys and tragedies with unconditional friendship.
Lucy, I am sorry to here of your loss and I offer my condolences however humble they be. Stay in ther Hepcitty, You has got a friend here and I got big shoulders to lean on, my ears are always open. Be safe and God Bless from a brother in the heartland. Sincerly Robbi Hunsucker
Lucy, I mainly lurk and learn, I always am amazed at your posts, as many others, you, are very knowledgable, thanks to all in this forum, I have picked up important info about people whether good or not so good, we have it all here. All I can say is keep on posting, I am taking notes. Al
