Introduction, New PSA holder?, Joe Tauriello

Hello everyone.....
This is my first post on the message board but I have been following it for a few months now. I just want to introduce myself. My name is Don Johnson and I have been a quiet, behind the scenes, vintage collector since 1978. The years of my greatest interest are 1959-1963 Topps Baseball. I have started these sets on the registry now as Don Johnson Collection (No, I have never been married to Melanie, but I can dream about it!!). I also dabble in ebay and my id is truecollector14. I attend about one to two national shows a year and I have met some great collectors and dealers over the years. Speaking of great dealers.........
I have followed several threads recently that involve discussion of SetBuilders and Joe Tauriello. Joe and I have been friends for about 6 years now. Since I have been attending shows for over 20 years and I have encountered many dealers, I can say that, without a doubt, Joe is absolutely the finest national dealer in the country. I can see from other threads that many of you agree with me. I just think it is great that Joe gets the credit that he deserves. I will say also, as honorable mention, that Paul Stark has always been excellent to deal with over the years and has great vintage stuff too.
Now. on to my next topic. I just received two submissions in the mail today. Both submissions were graded just last week on the same day. Invoice #4067950 was two free grades from coupons received from an earlier submission for express service. The cards are in the normal PSA holders that I am familiar with. Invoice #4072007 was a submission of three cards for the Sept CC special and these cards were crossovers from GAI. All three cards were in GAI holders labeled Presentation Set cards. The Throneberry card is a GAI 8.5 and it would not grade my minimun grade of 8, so it did not crossover.....very interesting! The Valdivielso card was GAI 8 and it crossed to an 8. The Barker card was also GAI 8.5 and it crossed to an 8. Now, here is what I want to ask everyone about. The two cards, Valdy and Barker, are in PSA holders that have a soft inner plastic sleeve of some sort. The outward appearance is very interesting. It makes the appearance one of a "ripple plastic" effect. Can someone shed some light on this? It is interesting that both submissions were literally graded on the same day and one submission has the normal holder and the other submission has the same holder with this soft sleeve plastic inner membrane. That is about the best way I can describe it. Look forward to hearing your responses.
I look forward to being a positive contributor to this message board in the future and to have more fun with our hobby by communicating with other experienced vintage collectors on this board.
Regards,
Don

i seem to recall something about this, not sure. just a thought, maybe measure them to verify if that could have been the reason.
Don,
Welcome to the boards.

Thanks for those kind words and welcome to the Boards. It has always been a pleasure to have Don at my tables. He is a great guy and I know he has knowledge to share on many vintage sets.

It's great to see another well qualified collector join the ranks of the mentally ill. Good luck on your sets.

Seems we may be in such bad shape after all.
Welcome Don.
Loves me some shiny!
Having done some buying and selling with you, It's nice to have another late 50's early 60's guy around here.
These 2 cards were graded at the same time with another 522 in between. I see no difference in size. I measured with a centering devise (template) calibrated in very small increments. 100ths of an inch. Granted, It's eiser to measure raw, the holder makes it a much more difficult task. I tried to line the cards up...
Is the 8 taller??

Great to catch up with you too. On the Farrell cards, with the naked eye, they sure look to be about the same size. One with a sleeve, one without?? who knows.
Good luck on that PSA 9 1961 Sheldon card tonight!
