would anybody buy a psa 10 KEY card from a set they are building or most like?

for example, if you are building a 1951 bowman set, then the mantle and mays are the key cards, so would you buy a psa 10 of them? or maybe of one of them?

That would be a pretty expensive PSA 10, considering what Mantle and Mays go for just in an 8. A more likely scenario is to have a token PSA 10 for your set. On some sets, this is still next to impossible.
  • but how about if you're making a 1970's set? that could be possible.

For my 1969 set, I plan to pick up a token PSA 10 at some point. Hopefully it will come through my own submissions. If not, I will pick the higher pop 10s like Rich Nye, Preston Gomez or Al Dark. It will still cost me $100-200 in any event. I also will not buy a 10 with a serial number that starts with zero. I think PSA has tightened up on giving out tens in recent years.
  • gemint...you getting a 69 jackson psa 10 anytime soon? or just a 9?

  • Gemint: I think PSA has pulled a fast one on the numbering. I used to agree with you and didn't like the 0 or 1 numbers for a 10, but recent submissions, as I'm sure you noticed, have been starting with 115xxxxx. Now a NEW batch I saw the other day were starting with 0's. Does anybody have any idea what the numbers signify?

As for the question, I'll get 10's if they are at a decent price or if they are on cards where no 9's exist (for the '69s, say a Torre or a Roger Nelson). But if I'm going to shell out for a 10, it needs to be by my definition of a 10, ie, perfect centering, no hint of a diamond cut, etc.

  • I'm currently building a 1982 Donruss baseball set
and have centered it around a PSA 10 Cal Ripken
rookie card. Other than that though, I feel that a
PSA 10 "key card" is better off standing on it's own
so it's not diluted among the other cards in a set.

  • To get the key card of a set I build in PSA 10 condition I would truthfully need to sell my house. Not happenin'.

  • I am right with gemint on this. I hope to have at least one token PSA 10 in my 69' set at some point in the future. I am also thinking cheap high POP. How bout' ol' Rich Nye!
