What do you Like Most about Collecting?

gemintgemint Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't think anyone has posted this question before. If so, sorry for the repetition. For me, I enjoy the challenge of building complete vintage sets in high grade and sharing war stories of the challenge with other collectors doing the same.

I like being able to share with other collectors and have them share with me. I never get sick of hearing about someone coming up with a great vintage find. I also love the thrill of being able to add another card to the set(s) I'm working on. Personally, there is nothing that can take this feeling away. I tried to stop collecting a few years ago because I thought this was a kids hobby. I even went as far as to give away or sell most of my cards, but then I got the bug again and I can't get rid of it this time.

    Nostalgia.

    Fellow collectors.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • 1)Nostalgia- reliving my childhood. When I see high grade cards that I collected as a kid, I become a kid again.

    2)It's fun

3)It's a healthy hobby (unless I go bankrupt!) image

Nostalgia is why I collect cards and memorobilia. I vividly remember going to shows and card shops 20+ years ago and opening those packs and getting that 1972 Rose for Xmas in 1983. Each time I get anothe card the memory stays with me that much longer.

"The thrill of the hunt" is why I partake in the set registry. 77 cloth is my main collection and I have 30+ copies of each one, but I need more!!!!!!!! There are still 10s out there and I know of at least one set that is a higher grade than my top set currently. I must have the best!image

    Great topic!
I like reading about other peoples collections who are very passionate about collecting. Also, the thrill of finally purchasing a card that you thought you would never own.
  • For me there are two main reasons.

    1. It keeps my childhood alive. I've been doing this as long as I can remember and truthfully could not see myself every letting it go.

    2. It's a tremendous escape for me from the daily grind. I like my work, but I love sports and sports cards. Especially the vintage stuff.
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

    aro13,

Every card I have or buy these days is a card I've dreamt about as a kid and young adult. Buying nice cards of Honus Wagner, Cap Anson, Jim Thorpe, babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and the like is something I never thought possible back in the day.

Thank got I have sons. They've given me an excuse to buy three of every card I want!!!

  • I collect Autograph cards, check out my Hall of fame Autograph set:

Just think a Hall of famer once either held this card and now I own it. I don't collect for value, I collect because it's cool, fun, and exciting. Plus I like the art work and I love the history of the game.

I find it nostalgic and enjoy the chase. I also like just sitting down on a weekend and looking at my cards. Reading the backs and going throught the sets is very relaxing.

Every card I add to my set, I also add a little factoid or statistical history in the comments section on the registry. It makes it the registry more fun for me.

Collecting cards for me is a great way to remember when times were much simpler ! Growing up in the late 50,s and early 60,s no one ever locked there doors at nite , you played baseball with your friends from morning to evening , taking time out to eat and check in with Mom - listening to Harry Carey and Jack Buck on the radio , all the while flipping my 1964 Topps Cardinal cards in a make believe game that my team always won - shooting my BB GUN at the Mick ( growing up in the Midwest , you hated the Yankees , because they always won ) - putting your least favorite cards in your bikecycle spokes to make it sound like a racecar ! So I guess it brings back the good old days ! I like the thrill of the hunt , finding that one card that makes your set better and nicer ! Robby

  • I love it all: the hunt, the auctions and bidding, the grading (both exciting and disappointing), the sense of fulfillment in completing a set, and even the occasional selling of some cards. It's a great hobby with a lot of great people in it.

The chase and pursuit is fun and thrilling, but what I like best. . .

Early last year I was over 90% on my first go-round with the 1972 set and was convinced to start the 1975 set. I started bidding on some PSA9s and kept getting outbid by this one guy. I was getting mad. Who was this guy who seemed to go out of his way to outbid me. After a week or so, Frank Smith e-mailed me and suggested we talk about which PSA9s each of us really wanted to avoid stepping on each other. In the last year and a half, Frank has proved himself to be a tremendous help as I was building the 75 set - but more importantly he's become a great friend.

At the 2002 SportsFest, I was sitting at Kyle Boetel's table looking through 72s and noticed this guy just poring over Kyle's 1978s. Scrutinizing every little detail and just crushed when an otherwise perfect card had a small flaw that disqualified it from meeting his standards. At the same time, he'd show the elation of a child on Christmas morning when he found a card that managed to meet his nearly-impossible standard. After a while we started talking and from that day, I found myself placing a lot more importance on the overall eye appeal of each card I obtained. Phil has also proved to be a great collecting comrade, but a better friend.

Why do I obtain cards? Because of the chase, the memories they bring back, etc
Why do I collect? Because of the friendships I make along the path of obtaining cards.

    Mike
So full of action, my name should be a verb.

I wonder what it would sound like if I put a SLABBED CARD in my bicycle spokes? Demolition Derby or Nascar?

Most of the answers already given sum up my reasons, although the people on these boards are quickly becoming the #1 reason for my collecting. It would be hard to not read these boards daily and I certainly would miss some quality people as well as entertainment.Nostalgia is certainly high on the list as well as the thrill of the chase.
