I'm new here, but NOT IN CARDS!

image

Hi all. As I have said, I am new here, but not to cards. My daughter and I currently have the #1 Al Kaline Master Set with 91%+ complete which is a monumental task to begin with as some cards are truly RARE! I probably won't have much to say on here,
but I have noticed that people like input and I just want to say that if anyone has ANY questions or needs direction on Kaline stuff,
let me tell you.....I might know a thing or two! I have been collecting cards since 1975 and bought my first Kaline (ROOKIE) for $15
back in 1983! I also have bought and sold several hundred 1968 Topps Detroit Tigers cards. YES, I know, I am from Minnesota, but
grew up in Detroit in the early 1960's. I know one person for sure from what I have read on here and he is a GEM! Frank Bakka.
It appears you all already know that though! LOOKING FORWARD to swapping stories or what have you. Like, I have not been to
a NATIONAL convention since 1989! Things certainly have changed, one can only hope for the better!

The Tigers were my favorite team and Kaline was my favorite player until the M's became a team in 1977. The Pilots were sorta my favorite team in 1969. 1970 began my lifelong hatred of Bud Selig.

Welcome aboard! Come join us on the Registry forum when you get a chance.

Welcome Tony! I've perused your set a few times, and it's very impressive. My dad grew up in Detroit in the 50's and 60's, and is a huge Tigers fan to this day. He also collects Kaline, and has a pretty impressive raw collection, but not many graded. I'm glad to have you here, I might bend your ear from time to time about birthday presents and such image. Take care,
    Joe

Welcome Tony! Very impressive GPA, especially considering the wacks you had to take for the ultra rare cards that probably have little or no population in high grade. I'd love to own that 1969 PSA 9 #410! image Good luck with your project. Here's a link to his set:

  • Welcome Tony! Great set. Add your two cents once in a while; it's always welcome.

  • Whoops...I gotta figure out how to use this thing! Thanks for all the great replies! I am here to help anyone I can regarding Kaline.
I hate to do any bragging, but I've have bought and sold so many Kalines, I know a few things about how they come, etc. I would
love to help anyone out in developing a set, single or whatever you need help regarding Kaline or 68 Detroit Tigers (TOPPS). If you
want help tho, probably best to email me, otherwise it could be a week before I get back on! As far as FOGEL, it is quite a challenge
to keep ahead of someone who has plenty of do-re-mi to buy whatever he wants.....! I have missed out on a couple of things on ebay
lately as 9's seem to be moving up a little (at least in Kaline stuff) and I have most of the semi easy MINTs (Although the 71 I have was
DEFINITELY a rip at less than $800!). As far as Harvey Kuenn, I don't know the full story as I was born in 1954, just a bit before my
"KALINE" fever hit! Now, one last thing before I retire for the evening.....................

Text 1 9 6 3 Elston Howard over Al Kaline for MVP....? Now, don't get me wrong, I think Elston was an inspirational
player and a good ballplayer....but (of course, I am prejudiced!), over KALINE? KALINE? Are you kidding me?
OH, the injustices in this world! LOL Until next time, goodnight all!

  • Howdy & Welcome!

I too am a fan of Al, although my daugher saw one of his cards and thought the "alkaline" Duracell battery was named after him! image One of my collecting specialities are "statbats", and AK was kind enough to do one for me.

Seriously, I have the #5 Kaline registry set which is only the third complete Kaline set on the Registry.

    Good luck and good hunting!
  • Have you met Kaline? Is he a good guy? I'm always interested in the players' personalities.

Welcome to the boards.Very impressive set.You might be able to get some of those Venezuela cards in a higher grade from MartinHidalgo, who is on these boards occasionally. He is a negro league expert(by most standards)and could probably be of some help.

  • While I obviously can't speak for Kaline Fan, I did happen to meet Kaline last fall in NY. He was very gracious and willing to chat, given time restraints. He readily agreed to do a "statbat" for me, and turned around to his agent and asked him to follow up with me in a few days. Sure enough, I heard from them two days later.

Satan, your interest in player personalities could be a complete thread on its own. I have met dozens of players, and not just for the fleeting few seconds in an autograph line. For my money, among the friendliest players are Killebrew (loves to talk), Musial (he once answered his own phone when I was calling for his agent when negotiating a statbat request), Carew, Yount, Kiner, Gaylord Perry, Carter (man, what a fun guy!), and of course Kaline. Of course, many others are complete and total jerks, but I think we know who those guys are.

    Welcome to da boards!!

I was born & raised in Detroit, and I now live in Sterling Heights just 20 minutes
outside of the city. Kaline was awesome, and not too shabby as an announcer.
Might have to pick up a Kaline rookie one of these days.....

  • Hi Tony. I am not a big time collector, but I do have a 1960 PSA 8 Kaline. This card is in my top 5 all-time favorite cards. It would be a major milestone for me to get this card in a 9. I have never seen one at any show or auction, leave alone have the opportunity to buy one.

I am just curious which Kaline card is your favorite and why?

I wish I could compete with you for Kalines, but on my limited budget and being a Koufax and Mantle fan, there is nothing left for other player sets.

I wish you the best in your collection, but not on the 1960 PSA 9 until I get mine.image

    Thanks for posting.

  • Welcome, Tony.

I always admired Kaline as a kid and admired him even more when I first heard the famous story about the youngster who taunted him saying,
"You're not half as good as Mickey Mantle".
    Kaline replied,
"Son, nobody is half as good as Mickey Mantle."

Welcone to the board. I also am a Kaline fan. I grew up on the west side of Detroit and has the opputunity as a young boy to live down the street from Norm Cash. We got to play catch with him as youngsters and sometimes Al would come by. Later on in life I opened a card store here in Muskegon and had him out to sign autographs and then later as a Domino's Pizza owner had the chance to golf with him. He is truely a great human and a really good golfer.

I have never met him. I have had a couple opportunities, but had
some other commitment or another.....always seems I am a day
late! Anyone I have ever talked to about him say he is one of
theee most gracious players to sign and talk to the fans. Only
makes me like him that much more!
  • image
Hey thanks for putting the set up for everyone to see! I enjoy the challenge
very very much! I sell material on ebay to support my "HABIT" and I always
need a "KALINE FIX" in one way or another even if its a card that I have bought
and sold over 200 cards (1967 #30) in my quest over the years. I still remember
buying a group of 35 Nineteen Sixty Seven Kalines. Man, I wish I had those back!
Those cards were all screeming monsters! That was way back in about 1984 or
so at a Minnesota Twins card fest I believe. All were 50/50 and just dripping with
gloss! I think I paid somewhere around $2.50 per card. OH....the pain.....
  • image
You know, whilst I was collecting Kalines, I decided to start collecting the two best hitters
in the AL back in the early and late eighties. I have a whole box of Gwynns and Boggs unslabbed.
I think most of them would be like NM+ to NM/MT+ Just modern stuff, but I always thought that
those cards would be very very valuable one day and I guess in a way they are because they
kept me in the game when I could not find Kaline cards I needed!
  • image
AH yes, those Seattle Pilots, I still have a pennant that I bought at a card
show in late 80's I think for about $15. I've kept that one because I always
thought that the team reminded me of the METS in the early 60's with the
    put together team.
  • image
My daughter (SHES 10) likes me to basically tell her stories about the
older players. She absolutely adores Jackie Robinson and Roberto
Clemente (AND OF COURSE, KALINE!) because I told her the stories
of not only what great players they were, but, what great human
beings. We also talk about Mantle, Mays, Aaron, The Babe, Lou Gehrig,
and lots of others like the old Tigers players, Norm Cash, Mickey Lolich,
Mickey Stanley, Willie Horton and others including my second favorite
Tiger of all time, of who, I do not think gets the recognition he deserves:
    BILL FREEHAN! What a catcher!
  • image
I remember that card! That Maz home run card was the only one I have
ever owned and I bought it in a local card shop for $3! I knew the card
was scarce, but when your final winning bid came in! WOW! I had no
idea that there would be so much interest in it!
  • image
HOWDY FRANK! I wish you would bid in more of my auctions! LOL
I always think of you when I get some really nice OPC's, like the
1965 Clemente I bought in PSA 8 off of here a few weeks back?
But, I see you are concentrating on the 72 TOPPS set....hope you
    find em all! GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the info on the Venezuelans. I always love
to buy the stuff thats "DIFFERENT"!
  • image
KINDA HARD TO ROOT FOR THE TIGERS?
I am embarassed to even think Kaline
used to play for this team!

    LOL
  • image
Well, thats great on the Kaline set! Its tough these days on some because
people are putting sets together and it takes some of the available higher
grade Kalines on eBay and such away from the Kaline set collector.
  • image
Sorry, I don't have the requested Kuenn. I will, however, keep my eyes
"PEELED" as my Dad used to say for that one!
  • image
I still have a sister in Roseville. My wifes family all lives in Flint, except
for one sister of hers lives in Rochester Hills. When I tell people at
    shows I was/am a big Kaline fan...."I remember him...he used to kill
our team with key hits!" AH YES...Good ole' number 6!
  • image
My favorite card! Thats very easy---The 1957 Topps #125!

A couple of good reasons...the obvious being the first years
TOPPS used real photos. Another is....look at that pose!
Just a fresh young kid with a striking pose looking like he
is ready to smack one! I guess another is he was just the
second year out from his only season (1955) that he won
a batting title. He would come in second 4 more times in
his career, but Tiger fans will forever remember him! Now,
ask me which one is my LEAST favorite!
  • image
In our Master set, we have a 1960 All Star PSA 9, but the
regular card (#50) is an EXTREMELY rare card in 9. I have
only seen one at a show a long time ago. At one time
I owned the 1962 All Star Card (#470) in PSA 9. It was
the only one at the time and STILL IS! I sold it in a Superior
Auction for over $1,000, but, I tell you what, if I had the
chance to buy that particular card back, I would definitely
pay more than that for it! That card should have been like
a 9.5. The guy I bought it from ($100 at the time!), pulled
it out of a presentation set and I have not seen one that
comes even CLOSE to that one! The 61 All Star card is
much easier to find in MINT 9. UH OH! LOOK OUT! Tony
is running his mouth again too much...information overload!
    LOL
  • image
You know, I have heard that story a few times as well. But, a die-hard
Mantle and Yankee fan told me once that Mickey Mantle himself said that
he wished he had the talent that Kaline had! Wowser! Kaline admired
Mantle tremendously during their battles and for the MICK to say something
like that, well, it means a lot to Kaline fans.
  • image
WOW! I wish I could have played catch with Kaline when I was growing up!
As far as Norm, he was a great personality, but, are the rumors true that he
and his wife had many an argument in their days? Not that he was a bad
husband or anything, but, thats what one Norm Cash fan told me about
good old Stormin' Norman! He probably helped Kaline tremendously in the
lineup as he proceeded Al and he could put one over the ROOF at Tiger
    Stadium at any time!
  • Ok Tony. I'll bite. You're least favorite Kaline card? And if you say 1960, even better. The less competition the less I pay. I would have to go with 1970. He looks a little caught off guard.

I also like the 55 Bowman. The different color border always made me think he was something a little more special when I was a kid.

I never saw Kaline is person, but the way other players talked about him reminds me of Stan Musial. Both great players and people.
