anyone working on two or more sets?

if so, why? just wondering? are you trying to build one high (the best that can be) set and one just regular low end graded cards for the set?

  • I am actually dabbling in 6 sets, but only 2 very seriously- 1972 mostly and soon to be 1974. I will be hitting 74 pretty hard in 2004. All of the early 70s sets are my game.

  • i have found collecting two sets at once to be more fulfilling. however, i don't have the cash two do both well....and have lived off of ramen noodles since i began my quest. i have been sinking all my effort into a '51 bowman football set. but psa graded cards are hard to come by on ebay. at the same time, i have an addiction to ebay worse than a crackhead's addiction to the rock. Subsequently, i pick up low grade '50 bowmans to pass the time and maintain the high. personally if i collected a set that flooded ebay, like most baseball sets i'd probably stick with making just one look for the highest quality cards i could afford. now that the '51 is six cards from completion, i'll probably dump the partial '50 set in the closet and forget about, and try and forget about the money i wasted collating it. then i'm gonna try and find an ebay anonymous meeting....but that's what all addicts say.

if you do find one of those 12 step programs you will most likely find all of us in it. the only piece of wisdom i could pass on to you, as it was passed to me, "don't run out of money"

    good luck in you collecting.

  • I'm trying to fill 12 sets currently. I find that if I limit myself to one or two sets, I'm likey to over pay on cards simply to keep busy. This way, I have many to choose from and pretty much keep to my spending limit. Its hard when I there are too many cards taht I nned and have to pick and choose between cards I need but can only afford one at a time.

  • i thought you meant 2 of the same set. for example an all PSA 10 1972 topps football and a 9 and below set of 1972 topps football. is this what you meant?

I'm in for 3 sets. One baseball, two hockey. Baseball much easier to work on through ebay. I buy those until the hockey ones show up.
  • I think collecting a few sets at a time can be more cost effective. For one, you need to be fairly disciplined price wise. Secondly, it takes longer so you don't feel the need to go after low pop cards as you have plenty of cheaper high pop cards to blow your money on. image

Well, I'm only seriously building/upgrading one...the 1969 Topps baseball set. But I am slowly building all pre-1976 sets in PSA form. I mostly buy raw and submit myself. So I don't limit myself to a particular year when hunting raw cards. I'll take what I can find in NM/MT+. Some of my sets are hitting 25% just from grading only the cards I have duplicates of. But I'm slow on investing to grade out my 70s sets because I'd rather invest that money into more raw cards. I can always grade them out when I acquire more duplicates. The duplicates help pay for my grading fees for cards that go into my personal collection. I'm happy with PSA 8 as a minimum grade and I'll add 9s or 10s usually only when I submit them myself. I typically don't pay multiple times SMR for PSA 9s on the secondary market. I think 8s are the best quality for the money. Others will disagree. If you're asking this question to help form you're strategy, my humble opinion would be:

    1) Determine what minimum grade you would be satisfied with
    2) Study the market before placing aggressive bids
    3) If working on multiple sets, focus most of your attention on the set that is currently experience a weaker market than the other sets

    qtisco...

Q: Are you talking about collecting 2 of the same sets??? (like a high end '56 set and another '56 set for lower end and dup's??). ...OR a quantity of different sets???

Which method do most of you use:

1). Try to get all of the cards in the set first, then start submitting
    2). Aquire, submit, repeat
3). Buy as many graded cards as possible before submitting

    I'm sort of a 1 and 3 person myself.

  • I think it's a necessity to collect more than one set at a time. There a hills and valleys in terms of card availability. With a few sets, it seems that there's always a new batch of one of them hitting ebay, this site or your local dealer. Every set doesn't have to be the Ark of the Convenant. It's nice to be able to turn your attention elsewhere when you're down to a few cards in a set that don't pop up every single day.
