Series Specialization

Are PCGS graders required to evaluate all series of coins or do you limit the number of series any grader may evaluate?

I ask this because of the high degree of knowledge in each series to properly evaluate condition. As you know, many series and dates require surface evaluation as well as wear characteristics. I find it hard to believe that any degree of consistency in grading could be achieved without a certain amount of specialization in some series.

All of the full-time PCGS graders have an extremely wide knowledge of U.S. coins. They are good at all areas, so they grade everything. A few of our part-time graders have some limits. For example, we have one guy who is a world class eye for 20th century stuff, but has never done much with gold. So he doesn't grade gold at PCGS.
