Fingerprints and grading.

I was wondering in your opinion what the highest grade a MS coin can get with a large fingerprint on it?
As a example picture a toned morgan dollar with a large fingerprint imbedded in the toning on the obverse.

Great question, but the answer is pretty subjective. If the fingerprint is not gross I feel it would be a 1 to 1.5 point deduction with a maximum grade of 66, if the coin was a monster otherwise. If the fingerprint was gross, then a 2 or 3 point deduction with a minimum of 64. That said, it's a question we've never really discussed in the grading room. It all really depends on the individual coin and would be a very case by case situation with no real hard and fast rules.
