I couldn't open this up for some reason but the average grade is high.

    Must be a great set.

Roger has a nice 99% complete set, but I believe he would be the first to tell you he still has a long way to go to compare to the overall quality of the 98% complete Domino Collection. And, I am a bit surprised also. Roger makes it clear that he has buy prices for the MS Memorials - hence, he would not be subject to the typical claim of "being held hostage" by opening up the set. Yet, he has chosen to keep it shut, which makes no sense to me at all under those circumstances? Come on Roger - open up your set, since you publish buy prices you adhere to anyway image

P.S. Roger - if you feel my comments are a wee bit unfair, let's get together in Long Beach for dinner and discuss it further in person - I know a great Greek restaurant with magnificent belly dancers image

Redcents, You have come a long way but you will never take it to the top. I cannot believe you did not bid higher for the 79 in 8. As a matter of fact you have no bronze ms68's in your set and no difficult ms69's in your set but you do have a nice above average overall set but it is nowhere close to the finest collection from 59 to present, trust me. Sometimes the best sets are not registered. Your latest proof finds are quite nice but again, it is nowhere near the finest set if they were all registered.
  • Never? That's a bit of a not so nice thing to say Mark. image Some major sets have been or are in the process of being liquidated (IS Memorial, Unknown Lincoln Collector, Dave you know who, & 2 others the owners may not want me to divulge their liquidation of.

Not disagreeing but as for: "I cannot believe you did not bid higher for the 79 in 8"

Knowing Domino needed it going in, I knew he probably had it sniped for 2-3k (probably the latter) & I honestly didn't want to get into it at that level. I'm also VERY surprised no one else (with all due respect, including you & Mitch) besides ME & Domino bid higher than $1,150.99. image

"Your latest proof finds are quite nice but again, it is nowhere near the finest set if they were all registered."

Also probably true BUT I DEFINITELY have more POP 1 TOP POP proofs than ANYONE else (at least as far as Memorial CAM's & DCAM's are concerned). image

Well, I dunno for sure but it's my guess that many people do not understand the bronze in 8's

Guys - we have been down that road before on the MS68RD 1979(p) cent. There are many reasons people do not bid on ebay for coins. For example, I do try to avoid bidding against customers whenever I can (sometimes that can not be avoided, especially if I need to execute a bid for someone). I would happily pay more than "$1150" right now for that coin just to stock the coin image

I doubt Roger would argue too much (and would admit) that he has more work to do to improve his set beyond the quality of Domino. That is what will make the MS Lincoln market quite exciting in the years ahead. image

  • Although I realize I MAY never past Dr. Charles OR the poolplayer (in the basic sets) as they are in fact .32 & .20 ahead of me respectively, it is fun trying image

& yes, I realize that if they just became 100% complete in the varieties they would automatically jump past me & yes I've heard it said before that there are better sets NOT registered ... image

    Datentype,

Although you are correct that there are unregistered sets out there that could claim the title, by the tone of your reply you still aren't giving redcents much credit for having the number one set. When it comes to currently registered sets, don't forget to take into account the expected grades that Domino might obtain the two missing coins in and what that would do to the set average. Heck if you feel that way about redcents set you must have a great opinion of the set I'm building based on the quality of the coins that I've bought off of you this year.

Furthermore, I'm not sure I understand the logic behind your "lowball bid" comment...seems to me that if I were in redcents' shoes knowing that the coin is going elsewhere at anything more than a steal that I would refrain from trying to drive up the price. All a higher selling price right now would do is support higher prices on the coin when redcents buys his own example in the future.

    redcents,

Congratulations! As for guessing what coin you have left...just had to do the math to figure that one out. I'm sure some of the dealers are left wondering though. image

    Stewart,

You keep using the word "fault" incorrectly. image

Rella, you're right. I said above average set but the ms set is much better than that and has several very hard to make coins in it and it should be honored and admired. The only point I was really trying to make is that in order to improve it from here out, will take stepping up to the plate considerably on the 4 figure coins when and if they ever become available. Lord knows I'm trying to make them.
  • Mark,

To this statement I can agree 100%. The upgrades from here on (with a few exceptions) will be hard to find & pricey when they (if ever) become available. image
  • I'll add my congrats to Roger. I wish I had more time (and money) to work on my Lincoln collections.

Just to add an additional thought. There may be other registry collections that don't have all their best stuff listed. I just won't add any missing Lincolns to my set if they don't equal the quality of the others. As an example, I own 1 brown Memorial variety that I refuse to add to my set. If I owned the other two in red, I might consider it (for a short while).

I guess you keep spreadsheets of your sets also? It helps me track my progress (and future progress).

    Redcents,
Congratulations! Attaining number 1 with only one coin to go is quite a feat. However, as Rella notes, it's rather simple math to figure out the weight of the coin you are missing. If the weight had been 1, then there would still be quite a few to guess from. But the weight isn't 1. image You might as well open the set up and let the rest of us admire it. Otherwise everyone is going to have to review their math skills image to find out what you are missing. And they still won't know what jewels you do have.

"seems to me that if I were in redcents' shoes knowing that the coin is going elsewhere at anything more than a steal that I would refrain from trying to drive up the price"

Roger: Exactly, but isn't it disingenuous to then assert those other fellas paid too much or issue warnings to fellow collectors concerning impending doom to the series?
