IS THIS DISCRIMINATION? PLEASE EXPLAIN

<< with Darktone - put it on the BST board >>

My question is why then do you have two Links on your post? One to your web site and one to your auction.
Is this not to do business? I am not trying to be a wise guy. I am not an old timer on this board and my question is serious. Please enlighten me as why you can link and I am not allowed to?
Respectfully, MapMaker.

They told me I was not allowed to Link to my coins. Just wanted to know why then they Link to theirs?
    Thanks, MapMaker.
  • Using as many links as you want on the Buy/Sale/Trade forum should be no problem. Adding a link or two in your signature line would be acceptable too I think. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong image)

Posting a bunch of links in a message in this forum would be considered unacceptable.

I think the general unwritten rule around here is that coins you have for sale or in auctions should be posted in the BST forum. A lot of times some folks just aren't aware of this.

Its a judgment call for this section.

If you start a thread with the title, Look at my coins for sale.
Then thats not going to be considered acceptable.

If you start a thread with, Why is no one bidding on my auctions am I doing something wrong?
    Then thats borderline.

If someone asks, Anyone know where I can find a 1933 saint?
And you have one for sale then you can respond yes I do.

As for links in your signature I do not know what the acceptable limit is but one is fine for sure.

The forum moderator will usually move any thread that they feel is unacceptable.

mapmaker, I think it's just a matter of degree. By convention, a single line that links to a group of auctions in a poster's signature line is ok, and you can do that. But if the link and auctions were all the poster ever referenced in the body of their posts, or if the poster were always starting new threads about his coins for sale, or mentioning his coins for sale and providing links in the text of their posts in other people's threads, people prefer to have it in the BST forum, because if we don't, this board will turn into coins for sale and crowd out everything else.

For example, the first few times you posted links, I went there and thought "ok" but after repeated repetitions, I started to think "ok already, mapmaker has coins for sale, give it a rest" sorry, but that's just what I thought, and started skipping over your posts.

my advice is put a single link in your sig line to your coin auctions, and then take it easy image

You can do what you want to with your sig line, IMO. Anyone who has a problem with it can get over it. I wouldn't put 10 different links, but I see no problem with a link to your auction page on Ebay and a link to your web site. Sometimes when I'm reading this forum I like to click on the links in the sig line to see what other members have up on ebay. I don't usually go over to the bst forum unless I'm seriously looking for coins at the time.

  • MapMaker,

You've asked a perfectly reasonable question...

In the year that I've been on the boards, the unofficial rules have been as the others have said here. I've observed that if there is a link in your signature to your site, auctions, or other sellable items - that is OK.
The line seems to get drawn when one creates a thread that promotes items for sale (other than on BST).

Threads that ask for critiques to auctions are fine IMVHO, because they tend to be a learning experience.

If the rule becomes that we shouldn't link items in our signatures, I'll gladly take mine out...

I would add, that sometimes a party posts a link to an auction when they wish to get advice or make fun of that auction....

  • there is a difference between a link (or 2+) at the bottom of a persons post

and a post about MY AUCTION with attached links

I have no major problem with it, but if all of a sudden 90% of the US Coin Forum posts are started by people about MY AUCTION, then soon no one will visit here

it seems to happen more often in the PCGS Set Registry Forum than here

but in most cases - they should be on the Buy, Sell, Trade forum

maybe if you titled your post -> "I have never sold through XXX auction company, when does most bidding activity occur.........."

or "What are the disadvantages of a reserve on a coin to be sold at Long Beach by ........."

there are differences between choosing to hit an advertisement link and hitting a link that turns into an advertisement

no big deal, but some people disapproveimage

I hit your link - took me to the Heritage sign-in page -

be careful trying to link to "my heritage" as if it works, people might be able to bid for youimage

do you have many coins in the auction coming up or just a few?

    Mapmaker -

the 4 links you included in your last post do indeed work. However, as an observation, they are very slow to load. I am connected through a T1 line and the delay was significantly noticable. Others who may be on dial up will wait quite a while to view the link.

    Good Luck.

the load time is due to the size of the images in the auction. Nice coins too !!!

Mapmaker, sorry if you were offended but that was not my intention. I thought I explained it nicely? Here's a LINK to the thread Mapmaker referred to. I am starting to think you are just trying to find ways to hawk your coins on this forum as it seems like you put links in every chance you get. mike
