Russ and all:My daughter is taking the plunge, into Kennedy Halves!

She's just finishing up her short set of circulated Walkers and now onto UNC kens and proofs! Any advice? If we get rolls from the bank, is there any chance of an UNC!? Wher do we look for the wear? Is the usual rule for break in luster apply in this series? Hope you all can help out!

Mint sets are fairly inexpensive, maybe you and her can cherry pic some Kennedys from those....

There are actually a few older uncs in the 50 cent rolls you find at the bank.
They will usually be lower quality but they can be unc. You can find solid date
BU rolls back to about 1994 so these later dates are easier.

The best coins do go in the mint sets but figure on looking at several sets be-
fore you find a good one.

Coins always wear from the high points down. To find these high points just
tip the coin between your eye and a light source. The high points will appear
higher than the rest of the coin as it approaches the horizontal.

    Eugene,

The usual rules certainly do apply re luster and wear. MS64 coins look very nice, but a little baggy. The areas where marks are most common on the obverse are the lower neck, cheek, and fields. On the reverse, the shield is a prime focal area, and the mint sealing equipment from the 70's on has a tendency to scrape the shield in what looks like a scuff. IMO, there are many ways to collect the series, but here are a few fun coins:

    64 Proof Dcam
    64 Accented Hair Proof Dcam
    65-67 non-SMS coins in BU
    65-67 SMS coins with cameo
    65 rotated reverse
    64 doubled die
    64 triple die
    66 doubled die
    74 doubled die
    66 no FG
79 Type I and II proof
81 type I and II proof
82-83 (were not issued in mint sets)
    87 (mint set only)
    98 matte proof
    Silver proofs from 92-current

There are tons more, but that'll get her started looking. If she gets serious, Dr.Wiles "Kennedy Half Dollar" book is very thorough, and an excellent reference. Happy hunting!

  • well, elana has refined her goal. PCGS registry, 8-pc silver proofs. Is this a nice way to start and a good way to go? Is the following a nice start to bid on?1964
