This is getting ridiculous!

I am speaking (typing) of all the phony cards for sale on ebay. I go to pre-1930 baseball, and I would say 10 out of the first 20 cards in their little gallery are fake.

Cracker Jack Walter Johnsons and Honus Wagners, T206 and T205 Cobbs and of course, the PRO graded stuff.
I can think of no other collectible field in ebay where this is so prevelent. I used to try to play good guy and email people bidding, but it's just impossible, plus the snake oil PRO card sellers usually use private auctions.

Should we all start contacting ebay about this? It's almost as if they need a sportscard watchdog.
Once in a while, I could understand, but every day of every week of every month; ridiculous!

    Scott-
I think that is the primary focus of the Net54 board. There are always a few threads on current scams on ebay. Ebay could care less, it seems , as they claim they are "investigating". I would highly recommend that anyone starting pre WW2 sets spend some time on that board (ducking the popups, of course) as there are many knowledgable collectors that are more than willing to poing out fakes there.
On Cracker Jacks it's especially rampant. Its bad enough on the slabbed ones that have been doctored, but the ungraded ones that look too good to be true are often just that. Besides all the reprints this set seems to often be the target of trimming (due to its thin stock) and bleaching (necessitated by the common staining on the ones that started out in a box of CJ's). This is one set to be VERY careful of buying raw.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • I agree on the Cracker Jacks. I just got a Harry Hooper back from PSA....FAKE!!!

I bought it over a year ago so god know who I bought it from. But, I paid $92.00.

The good news is I did finally took sharkface2003 out of business. That a^^wipe is famous for selling top-notch aged replicas of 1933 Goudeys, 1934 Goudeys, 1933 Delongs, 1949 Leafs, 1914 Cracker Jacks, 1915 Cracker Jacks, 1914 General Baking, 1948 Bowman Basketball, 1909 T206, 1941 Play Ball, and 1935 National Chicle Football.

The bad news is he'll probably be back under a new id so be aware for these knock-offs.

  • This is one of the biggest problem of the Hobby ... And it is outright fraud ... There are few sellers out there that only sell PRO high dollar value cards (not to mention the folks doctoring raw cards...) I really have to wonder if there is somesort of kickback scheme going on here... At the very least the grading of Pro would seem to constitute some sort of fraud by a legal definition... Does anyone know if a collector has ever gone after them for such in court?

  • GoSoxBoSox,

I got taken by the same guy on the exact card you use as your id icon. Scary thing was he didn't try to do a high grade. He beat the card up and made it look 70 years old. It fooled me. I'm glad I didn't buy one of his five Declaration of Independence offerings.

    Best,

  • .......Women, Money, Crown Royal and Cards in that order.

Seriously though, as far as PRO grading service (who gets beaten like a red-headed stepchild 'round here) is concerned, this company is worthy of an FBI investigation. I mean, if they've got time to bust WIWAG for their scandle, they certainly must have time to investigate PRO, who knowingly encapsulates trimmed cards to create a market for swindlers who can take advantage of unknowing collectors who are unable to distinguish between all the different grading companies.

    We've all been burned (me= M116 Mathewson ($1200.00 late 80's)
And when you see it occur on an everday basis to others, it gives the hobby (another) black eye.

  • PSAtan,

He got me on the other Gehrig in the set and well as the Foxx. Scans are attached. $928 down the drain.

  • Interchanges,

You make a good point ... I myself have often wondered why they do not go after PRO for fraud...or some other crime ... I bet if they looked they may also find some sort of kick back scam against some of the larger sellers of PRo cards....

  • <<<<He got me on the other Gehrig in the set and well as the Foxx. Scans are attached. $928 down the drain. >>>>

I feel your pain, I've been burned 3 times on ebay like that, I lost out on a Babe Ruth card for $320. it looked like it would have graded a PSA 2, the guy said it was once in a PSA holder but he cracked it out, when I submit it into PSA they rejected it saying it was not real. The guy then changed his account and sellers ID and me being New to ebay at the time, I ended taking it as a loss.

Another time a guy sold me a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth I paid $1500. for it and turned out to be counterfeit, I asked seller for refund, and said he won't refund my money and that the item was what I bought. So I went to my local Court house and filed for Small claims, and filled out a ton of paper work to press charges on the seller. The guy was based in Michigan, after a few months gone by and right before the court date, I recieved a certified check in the mail for $1500. I was sueing for alot more than that, for wasting my time. He said he didn't know, the jerk held my money for almost 3 months. after I recieved my money, I still didn't drop the charges, it would cost him more to come out to California, and e-mailed me a long letter saying he was sorry and that he'd Fed-EX me $250. for all the problems. Still it took him over a week to send my payment. I didn't drop the charges until payment recieved.

If you get burned like I did, keep all your paper work which includes e-mail as well as print out the auction page. You can take them to small claims, make sure you have a valid name and address of the seller, (no PO Box) then there is a very good chance you can get your money back.

Another time, I bought an SGC 40 Sporting Life Honus Wagner, for $500. the guy had a very decent feedback rating I think he had like 20 positives and no negatives, but the guy never sent my card, he was located in New Jersey. I paid for Next day delivery and didn't get the card for 5 weeks, I really hate scammers rather than fill out more paper work at court, so I figured I'd visit the guy, I had a business trip in NY and after it was over, I took a taxi and I went to see him, This guy turned out to be a 17 year old punk living with his parents, he was surprised when I showed up at his front door. What he did was he scanned one of his dad's baseball cards because he needed money, I was lucky his parents were home and let them know what he did, and told them Court papers were in the process. And I was taking his son to court, I showed them a bunch of copy e-mails and copy of the auction, and a copy of the Cashier check reciept from my bank. After a bunch of appoligies and I'm sorrys, this was my first time bs, I ended up with the card going home. The Jerk, I should have took the guy to court, If he never showed up at least he'd have a criminal record on file.

So I know what you went through. I been there, now when ever I buy stuff I either charge it was my Visa because I know it's insured, or I need to have bought from that seller before if I'm going to do a large transaction with a money order. I only use paypal with small transactions under $250.

If somebody sells you a fake and you think there is no hope, you don't need an attorney, just take them to small claims. you may pay a fee, and the court system will do the rest, they will notify the seller.

    I hope that helps.

I only wish I could have seen the kid's face when you showed up at the door. I bet he shat his pants. He must have thought it was some kind of MTV reality show playing a gag. You probably could have filled up a small swimming pool with the sweat trickling off his assssss. I'm glad you stood up for yourself and thanks for the info regarding small claims court.

Do it yourself. I'm pretty sick of lawyers down here.

  • Roastedcat,

Nice. Real Nice. My problem with small claims court is I have a P.O. Box on him out in National City, California. The police department there said they won't help.

I also have a lot of information from eleven other people that he did the same thing to. I have dozens or e-mails and pictures from these people. Yesterday, someone sent me his phone number. I haven't tried it yet.

The question now is how do I get his address?

  • Tom,

Go to www.phonebook.com . You can try and use the reverse phone directory which when you type in a phone number usually gives you a persons name and their address ( if the number is not unlisted).... Good Luck Jeff

You can also try Google.com. Just type a phone number into the search line and sometimes you get a name and address. That's actually kind of scary.

  • I just like to say also when ever you buy something on ebay that has high dollar amount, be sure to look at the sellers feedback rating. I found that alot of beginner ebay sellers will probley buy alot of $1.00 items just to raise their feedback level, there are people spending like $20. to $100. and buying themselves a feedback. They scan all of ebay and look for items like ebooks, stickers, penny stamps for $1.00 or less and buy like 20 to a hundred items from from different people just to build there feedback rating up so it will look like they did business for awhile, when in reality it's a new account about a month old when they start selling, they will sell small items for under a buck with "buy it now" and free shipping, just to make sure they are legit. Then when they start selling something big and it may be a card picture scan stolen from another ebay seller, then thats cause to worry. There are so many scam artist out there, it's not even funny. Always be sure to check the sellers feedback and see what he's bought and see what he's sold. It will make a big difference whether you really want that card, of if it looks too good to be true, you might be set up for a scam. Also make sure you see what city they are in, if they are located in "India, Belgium, Malaysia, Thailand" the chances are very high it's a scam and stolen scans are involved.

I'd really think about it before bidding, contact the seller and ask questions, ask if there's a refund if your not satisfied, this way you'll have an e-mail copy. Make sure to get a phone number when sending out a big money order and make sure you call the number once to let the seller know your sending payment, just to see if the number works. A few times, I've been given bogus numbers that don't work or they have never heard of that person, so I just let the seller know I'm backing out the deal, then you file a complaint to ebay, and they become NARU

    Protect yourself and watch out!

I had to sue someone in Small Claims Court and was able to get a street mailing address through the private process server that I used. He was very diligent and it ran me $150 that was recovered in my suit. Do not let the PO Box be a deterrent. You can find out who this lowlife is and serve him at home. A Private Investigator can find out what this guy had for dinner last night for a few bucks too, if you run into a dead end with the Process Server. If there are that many people who were taken by this clown you guys should all go after him and file police reports too.

    Roasted Cat, Excellent info!!!!!!!!!!
  • Roastedcat just became my favorite guy on the board. That's GREAT.
  • Jeff,

I did the web search and got the following info on the guy.

    Brian Walters
    4665 Nogal Street
    San Diego, CA 92102
    (619)266-8833

eBay gave me this info on him:

    Robert Stewart (eBay ID: sharkface2003)
    PO.Box 1415
    National City, California 91951-1415
    robstewart2003@webtv.net
    robstuaart2003@webtv.net
    Paypal ID: sportcards2004@yahoo.com

I wonder if either name is correct? the PO Box is where most of his victims sent the money. I paid to the paypal account.

Now I'll see what I can do with that before filing a suit my self, and then forwarding the ifo to the other eleven people I know who were ripped off by him as well. Make that twelve....I'll add PSAatan to the list.

Anything else you guys can think of would be helpful. He's take thousands from guys like you and I already.

Did you buy the paypal insurance when you sent the money, because Paypal will re-emburse you back up to $1000. (When ever you buy big items with paypal, buy the insurance) - This has saved my butt a few times, paypal will credit your account, and do a follow up investigation on the seller.

If not, you can file a buyers complaint, to get there, scroll all the way to the bottom of your account and click on security center. Then click on buyers complaint: If the seller has enough buyer complaints towards him, Paypal will do an investagation. Also you should let the others who were frauded know this and have them file a buyers complaint. The more people that file a complaint on the buyer, the faster action is taken on the seller.

Also in that same area you can report the problem to Paypal.

    I hope this helps.

    GoSoxBosox,

And if you paid by Visa or Mastercard through Paypal, you should be able to get the money back through the credit card company. Call the credit card company and file a claim - they'll do some of the investigation for you and the major ones offer buyer protection.
