Elli... You can't always tell if a coin has been dipped, but you can always tell when a coin has been over or improperly dipped. In some cases dipping actually improves the coin: hazing on proofs and light toning spots on white coins are a couple of examples. Don't get me wrong I Love "original skin" and toned coins. Alot of goregeous coins have been and will be damaged by improper or over dipping.
Nicely and dipped should not be used in the same sentence. But what might help us all identify them better is not the bright white 100 year old coins. What would really help is contrasting pictures of original skinned coins and dipped and retoned coins where the dipping was done excpertly and the luster wasn't stripped out.
Being able to tell that kind of dipped versus never dipped is something that even fools the excperts or pcgs wouldn't have unannounced changed their minds on the "market acceptability of properly dipped coins.

The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.
Nicely and dipped should not be used in the same sentence.
Au contraire, barberlover. I've seen many a nasty-looking coin improved by a dip. I just wouldn't trust myself to do it right. I've submitted a number of pieces to NCS that were very "nicely" conserved, (which included dipping).
