New life for the "Monster" 1972 Topps set

Hey Guys, It's nice to see so much play on the 72s again. There was a time when I was concerned about the market value of my set. The prices kept going down with no new members to soak up the new submissions. Now with a new breed of 72 collectors on the wing, I'm no longer concerned. Also, soon our beloved 1972 sets will gain the "Vintage" tag. Then all of us who have worked so hard to put together the only set big enough to be called "Monster" will gain new faith and pride in our sets. My only hope is that these new 72 collectors will be gentleman (or women) to each other the way that many of us "Old timers" were. The 1972 Topps set has many strong leaders such as Frank, Erik, Dave, Carlos, Mike and many others. Anyone who chooses to collect this set will have a rare chance to not only put together a great set but also be invoved with some great collectors as well. A thought to the new breed from one of the old timers. The set gives off a special glow when it's put together with good will and not smeared with the blood of the other guys that you beat up to get it. Neil

You had every right to be concerned. When the lot of 1972's in Superiors latest auction with an SMR of over $5100 ended at around $2600 (INCLUDING THE 15% BP), I just shook my head in disbelief. As it turns out, this might have been one of the biggest bargains in the entire auction. I honestly have no idea how many low pop commons were included in the lot. Card prices realized tend to move in cycles and hopefully this will be another uptick for the 1972 crowd. I have cut and pasted the description of the lot below.

<Lot # 462
1972 Topps Baseball Starter Set in PSA 8 w/Stars
Lot Information
Final Bid: $2,645.00 (includes 15% buyer's premium)
Description: One of the greatest sets that Topps has ever put out, in this humble writer's opinion, is the 1972 Topps Baseball issue. With 787 cards, it's a huge set that takes a lot of effort to finish, especially if one attempts to do it in high grade, such as in PSA 8. What we're offering here is a wonderful opportunity for one lucky bidder - a full one-third of the set, 258 cards, with each card already residing in a PSA 8 holder. None of these have qualifiers, and it's a true high end start because there are so many of the set's key cards included. With too many numbers to list in this collection, a summary will have to do, as follows: (#'s 1 - 525) 170 cards, with #1 Pirates, Yaz, Yaz IA, Mays, Mays IA, Killebrew, Schoendienst, Fisk/Cooper (R), Perez, Ldrs. #'d 87, 89, 90 and 92, F. Robinson, Gibson, Morgan, Kingman (R), Simmons, Cepeda, Brock, Allen, Foster, John, Concepcion, Aaron, Clemente IA, Aparicio, Aparicio IA, Oliva, Jenkins, Carlton, Bench, Bench IA, Reggie, Reggie IA, B. Williams, B. Williams IA, Seaver, Seaver IA, Stargell and Torre. (#'s 526 -656) 43 cards, with B. Robinson, Rose, Rose IA and R. Smith. (#'s 657 - 787) 45 cards, with Ranger Team, Garvey, Carew, Carew IA, Koosman, Koosman IA, Kaat, Bonds, Carlton (Traded), Morgan (Traded), F. Robby (Traded) and Reed #787. Those listed are in addition to numerous Teams, Checklists, Specials, Kid Pics, etc. that are included. Total SMR for this awesome lot is $5,120.>
Are you saying I should give this set another shot? :-)
