1972 Topps Now Up

My 1972 Topps set is now up. It debuts at #14 on the charts (with a bullet - if they had one here...) with 32.3% complete and an average rating of 8.05 - watch out Dude, I'm coming at ya! I look forward to hearing from anyone with extra 1972's in PSA 8 or 9 NQ burning a hole in their pockets!

Thanks for the warning 'Doc. That's a low priority set for me, so you should breeze past me with little effort.
  • Outstanding!!!

My favorite set even though I sold mine.

Can still remember going to Woolworths and Rexall buying all those Series Packs to get the set complete.

When I got married in 1983 I sold thousands and thousands of 72's, and alot of high numbered cards along with 1961 Cards that I bought from an old couple with thousands of high numbered cards. I think I had 10 Mantle AS Cards as well as the other high numbered cards in multiple lots.

    I had:

    1959 Complete Set
    1962 Complete Set
    1966 Complete Set
    1967 Complete Set
    1968 Complete Set
    1969 Complete Set
    1970 Complete Set
    1972 Complete Sets
    1973 Factory Bought Set
    1974 Factory Bought Set

If I had kept all of it, I could have retired.

1st Finest Set - 1981 Baseball Fleer Basic - Retired
1st Finest Set - 1981 Baseball Fleer Master - Retired
1st Finest Set - 1955 Baseball Golden Stamps - Cleveland Indians - Retired
1st Finest Set - Mel Harder Baseball Master - Active
Mel Harder Showcase Set - Active
#15 on Current Set Registry - 1972 Topps Baseball - Retired
#23 on All Time Set Registry - 1972 Topps Baseball - Retired

dalew -- I bought my '72's at WT Grant's. I don't think that franchise exists anymore.

Steve -- Thanks for your efforts in helping keep the economy rolling!
  • Dave -

No problem! Doesn't everyone know that personal consumption (no, not just eating) is 2/3rds of our GDP? Any guesses as to how much of the GDP is tied up in spending from members of this board? Hmmm.......
  • Steve,

Now listen. I'm just 2 spots ahead of you at #12. Don't pass me too quick, you hear? image I was eyeing the top 10, but folks like you may keep me from it! Seriously, nice work and maybe we can help each other out along the way with dupes or whatever. Keep up the good work!!

    Machodoc...

Hey Steve..Just took a peek at your set...Outstanding ! I saw a lot of red flags on some other sets too...(10) flags for upgrades and (1) flag for a new set (yours..)

You'll be traveling with a pretty "fast" group looks like.....

    Good Luck !!!

  • Thanks guys!

Jeb - get used to life in the low 50's! imageimage And Abba (certain your name is not an homage to that disco group?), I'll try not to pass you too fast, but in the meantime, I'll get a "truck driver's tan" trying!!

    Steve

    PS - I'll explain a "truck driver's tan" if necessary....It's a truck driving saying...
  • Macho,

I do like ABBA ( should I admit that? image). I even have their greatest hits CD, but my sn isn't because of them. ABBA is the first letter of my 4 kids names.

PS Are you sure your name isn't from that Village People song? image

  • Ouch! You nailed me!! It's funny, when in college in the late 1970's I was one of those people who thought disco - and the VP -were akin to Biblical plagues and pestilence. As I grew older, I remained a devoted fan of groups like the Who, etc.. but by then some of the then-ancient disco era tunes could bring a smile to my face. I remember in 1996 seeing the movie "The Birdcage" with Nathan Lane and Robin Williams and smiling at the old Pirates 1979 disco theme song "We Are Family"... (at least that one has a sports connection..)

In 1978 I thought the Village People were a scourge of the earth, but here today, 25 years later, I now accept them as nostalgia that anyone can now smile at.

And no, my board name derives not from the VP, but is rather the name of the body of water I live on that itself was named by local Indian tribes 300 years ago. I also have the distinction of living not less than 1/4 of a mile from the escape route of John Wilkes Booth, although that's an entirely different thread in another place...
  • "Macho man" was indeed the Village People, but "Macho Duck" was a Rick Dees spoof song that actually hit the charts.

  • Walked into a antique shop today at lunch and found baseball cards, lots of'em. Destination edited for future use. In looking through the gobs of 72's this guy had, all in pretty nice shape by the way, I stumbled across the infamous Paul Schaal in Action. In fact there were 5 of them! All were NRMT+ or better and every one of them was offset approx 20/80 L/R, a few worse. It was like they cookie cut all 5 cards to look exactly alike. I took only the best one for corners and centering. I'll have to measure it closely observing PSA standards, but I believe with a "No Qualifiers" submission it is at best a 7 due to centering.
I promise the 72'ers I will bring the POP report with me next time and try to snap up some of the toughies worth grading.
