Team Sets on the Registry

Who should be included in the team sets on the Registry?

Only players pictured on their cards with that team?

Players traded to that team during the season [even though their cards list them as being with other teams]?

Players listed with the team, but who did not play that season [eg retired].

I was scanning team sets and noted the following about the 1959 Yankees team Set:

3 players who were never on the Yanks at any time in their careers: Jack Urban, Bob Martyn and Mike Baxis.

3 players who played with the '59 team, but were not pictured as Yankees on their cards: Hector Lopez, Gary Blaylock and Mark Freeman.

I think the first three have to go and I'd be willing to let the last three stay.

  • I just had a brief email discussion with BJ (PSA) on this recently when I submitted a 1976 Angels Team set. I had included the Traded cards but it was decided that these would not be included in the team set at this time. I believe the primary reason was software related with PSA. In my opnion, team sets should include all base cards from that year and brand that feature a player in that teams uniform. This includes traded cards (as long as the player is shown wearing the teams' uniform), leader cards, and highlight cards.

I think the tough decision is the modern team sets. You can still follow the criteria above but I think including game-used/auto/refractor/whatever in modern team sets might make it a little more interesting for collectors. If you do go this route, where do you draw the line? Do you include that 1/1 Ruth signed jersey? Maybe include cards that were produced in 600 qty or greater?

Agree that vintage and modern require different criteria.

  • Mantlefan (Frank),

The third paragraph of the page entitled PSA Set Registry Set Requests mentions that "The team set consists of cards from a particular manufacturer that depict players from that team."

This would include not only individual cards but also team cards, All-Star cards, highlights, checklists, rookie stars, and combination cards which include players from other teams such as rookie stars, league leaders, World Series, and special cards like the 1958 Mantle with Aaron, for example.

So the key is that the manufacturer (Topps or whomever) has identified the player on each card as being with a particular team, and therefore the team set in the Registry will consist of all cards showing players on that team.

Now as for the six cards you mentioned in your initial post above, none of them should be included in the 1959 Topps Yankees team set because they're all shown as being on other teams. As a matter of fact, five of the six are with the Kansas City Athletics; Blaylock is with the St. Louis Cardinals. BJ has been notified and will be removing these six from the listing.
