If you had to guess, what do you believe will be the ending price on this one?
It's a tough coin to find in Superb GEM and is needed by a number of different types of sets.

Speculation?

Let's see, a POP 17/0 coin, in a popular series, I would guess $275 (but what do I know).

Beautiful coin. This one is tough to find clean especially the reverse.

A lot of the mint set coins which approach this quality are PL's.

Would guess $850. I've submitted quite a few of those over the years. Haven't figured out why the graders always give my coins a 66 instead of a 67. Thought maybe it was lack of detail in the hair or lack of luster? The detail is not there in the hair on this date no matter how strongly the coin is struck. The sharpest struck 76-Ds are from mint sets and they lack in luster. An easy coin to make in 66 but extremely tough in 67! image

    Pat,
Good question. As misterR pointed out the hair detail is just not there on this date>> at all. Original luster is important as well as a somewhat mark free coin. I would say the most common areas that hurt this year is the light hairlines on the portrait and the date needs to be struck well with no contact marks.

That said, I would say it will go between $550.00 and $600.00. Now don't let Mitch know about this. He tried to talk me out of mine image If that is the case ( a fight for this low pop coin, I think that is just as tough as the 1964 silver half) we may see it sell for up to $875.00 JMHO.

"don't let Mitch know about this"

Ken - Really - I am not obcessed with my #2 Registered Kennedy set. I have passed on several MS70 SMS coins already at wonderful prices because they were not "perfect" to me. If I fill that 76(d) hole next week or next year, it is really fine. A problem can develop with the Registry IMHO where one does become a bit obcessed with "filling holes" or gaining "pop tops", be it classic or modern. But, I doubt "RA" (Registries Anonomous") will become a growing business that quickly image

When if ever will the pop increase and what do you think that high water mark might be?

Well my estimate was obviously way off the mark.

Hey guys, no revisions image That's like picking a different super bowl team at half time.

Pat, are you trying to stay safe on this? What is your guestiment?

Mitch, F.Y.I. There are no confirmed sightings of any "RA" groups or affiliates. You obviously are coming down with a well know case commonly called "Cornea Glazment Syndrome". Simply put...You are looking at too many high grade, Registry quality coins that sometimes leads to delusion and confusion. I suggest you send your best 1964 Kennedy half to me straight away. This will relieve some of that pressure of climbing to the top. Common side effect may include Washingtons and Roosies to name a few. We can of course narrow it down and make for sure.
Please answer this simple question: Have you seen patterns before your eyes lately?

I thought so, Now send that top quality 1964 express mail right away image

    $671.

The MS Kennedy series is a very exciting series, which has yet to get the attention it deserves IMHO. I told the same thing to Richard Green a couple years ago before he bought his first MS Kennedy Half. Look at him now image

I would love to keep upgrading my current #2 Registered Kennedy collection (and also help another collector or two I am working with on the series improve their sets as well). But, the key with a set like these Kennedys is patience and pursuing the right coins at the proper levels . The beauty of this series is there is basically "no rush" at this point. These coins are not like my pattern nickel collection, where if I pass on a coin today I face the possibility I may never see it again or might likely have to pay more for it when it comes around again. On the other hand, there is the potential for HUNDREDS of collectors to step into these MS Kennedy halves in the short years ahead, while it is more likely a mere handful of collectors mosey into the pattern nickel market. Not suggesting one market is better than the other - they are entirely different markets which need to be approached in a completely different manner IMHO. image

Oh sure in the next few years you're probably right.

...And if you are then watch out for the pattern nickels in few not as short years, they'll likely be explosive!

...Is it fair getting a jump on everyone like this? image

The next several years will be very dynamic. It will hardly resemble the last 40 years.

  • I've got one here in 66 and it doesn't come close to that image. It has evidence of heavy die polishing on the reverse, more ticks and some haze. The 67 at auction sure it getting some strong bids! I was surprised to see it get this high.

A 1976 coin that many type set needed.
    A pop 17/0 coin.
    A JFK 50c coin.

    My guess is $2000 image

    Last time I saw PR70DCAM 1976 JFK 11/0 went about $6000.

Moderns are here to stay! image My wife said: "We could sell yours and you can make another one." To which I said: "Yea right!" image

I thought there might be rally for this coin. Most times when it comes up for sale, it is done behind closed doors and we never hear the hammer price. I enjoyed watching it auctionimage

    Sean,

Good point, I noticed this also. I only wonder if it was bought as a possible upgrade (which I think it may have been), but what will the cull go for? Would we see prices adjust themselves as Mitch is talking about on another thread, as in MS66 kennedy coins at one time fetching up to $500.00 a coin in some cases, then adjusting back down? I too think we may see it (the extra coin) sell for a more reasonable price image Just MHO.

"i sold one to mitchell lastyear for around 565 i think."

Bill: I believe you did. Unfortunately, it appears I sold it before I decided to seriously collect the set. I also sold a nice 1967 in MS67 I would love to have back in the set.

But, again, IMHO, the pop 17 1976(d) is only a $500 or $600 coin even now. But, obviously no less than (3) serious collectors disagree with that view.

Hey misterR, do you want to sell that 1981 MS66 Kennedy on the invoice you mentioned? I tried to PM you, but it did not work.

    Thanks,
