Is it still a $2,800 coin?
If you study what occured with late date wheats (1934-58), the folks who conservatively bought MS66RD coins years ago for $25 essentially still have $25 coins today. The folks who bought coins like 1947(p) in 67RD at $400, or 1946(p) at $1k, or the pop 1 1948(p) in MS67RD I sold for a little more than $200 on ebay in 1997 - made enough money on the pop top coins to cover a great many mistakes along the way.
Hey, it is possible all Memorial cents in high grade do nothing but tank from here. Then folks can gloat that they didn't buy any when they were overpriced. It is funny though how you rarely see a post ever entitled "What An Idiot I Was To Not Buy The 1948(p) Cent in PCGS-MS67RD For $200 When I Had The Chance A Few Years Ago"
Wondercoin
That is not the coin wondercoin bought for $2800 anyway.
That coin was much better then this one.
I know that coin very well.

It is pop 4 not 2 & yes, I know it's not "THAT" one as I still have a copy of the web page from "IT" on my hard drive.
I was just poking a little fun at Mitch as I assume he already sold it to Domino anyway long before the pop was no longer 1. In hindsight, we've ALL (at least all of us top pop memorial chasers) overpaid for something along the way. As Mitch said, some hold up & some don't. That's the chance you take in this game. No regrets on my end.
That's why perhaps Mitch thinks my buy prices seem a little too low but I'm pricing into them my assessment of the probability of expected future pop increases - perhaps more than some - heck since I'm the only one posting buy prices, more than everyone.
p.s. My "buy" on this is now down to $900 link. Anyone got the balz to go on record willing to pay more?
p.p.s. Mitch, you're $750 didn't hold up - neither did your $865 bid - (now who's buy price is too low)
I thought the trick was to encourage bidding when you're the seller and to lie low when you're the buyer.

Just having a little fun. If it goes over my "buy" price I'll just "lay low" for another to come along - which if & when it happens when the pop goes up the price will undoubtedly go BELOW $900 . I'm learning to be more patient lately.
Roger: Would you expect them to in a 10 day auction with 9 1/2 days left?

But all good luck to you & any others that bid.
1. Chasbren got a terrific coin for his collection in that 79(p) MS68RD. I would have gladly paid more for the coin than the winning bid.
2. You should delete your "warning" on the BST board - that really isn't fair to do on a thread offering a coin, especially one where you are the current high bidder. No biggie, just a suggestion.
Wondercoin
2. Done. You're right. I didn't think about it in that context. I guess here the opinion is OK? On the other hand, isn't it "fair" ESPECIALLY if I'm the high bidder? - Just kidding - I don't play that way.
I think so, unless Cladmaker PM's you
Wondercoin
I appreciate you bidding on my coin, but DON'T OVERPAY ON THIS ONE GUYS!!! is not a very appropriate statment IMHO to post about another fellow collectors or dealers coin.
You have been a good customer of mine on eBay in the past and I would not go around posting DON,T PAY TO MUCH FOR TOTAL TRAVEL SOLUTIONS!!! This is my sole income and as it may be a hobby for you, statments like that do take affect and income off the table. Also, There is no guarantee on any (the 6 1971-s) submissions getting the grades we all would like!
Mitch, Thanks for your positive input on the subject.

Does his post instead of a PM count?
Ok. Sorry. I guess my assesment of the value of the information I had to potential collectors/buyers & fellow board members seems to be outweighed by (to my surprise) the apparent amount I've upset you (or damaged?: i.e. helped to restrain the maximium price you may get). For that I apologize. I promise to not share that type of inside info in the future. As to my assessment of the value relative to the observed price of the 79 in 8, that will have to stand. No hard feelings from me. I understand your position but some may ask, if you, as a seller, beleive that buyers should have as much info as possible to help them make the most informed judgement as to the value of what they are contemplating purchasing and whether board members should be allowed to freely exchange (even if unsollicited) any info they may feel is pertinent to other fellow board members.
I'm genuinely curious: & will defer to Mitch & the other more experienced - is it only OK to post things that DO NOT put downward pressure on a particular coin/date/grade, etc.? or only if it's not currently being offered for sale? or only if.......????
p.s. Was it OK for Glen to say "That coin was much better then this one" ?

Inside info? Did the coins get the grade? Possible grades or grades we'd like to receive hardly count as inside info. As MoneyLA (Alan Mendelson) has proven we rarely get the grades we want/expect. It would appear to some that you attempted to influence the price, although I doubt this was the case.
No, in that case, you've certainly done wrong

And just to clarify, I originally had NO idea that the originator of this post was the seller. I originally thought it was just a board member pointing out something of interest for other board members (and welcoming discussion of same) as it clearly does not state anywhere in the original post that this was a "sell" listing. Again SORRY.
Wondercoin
2. If "informed" is the same as "confused" then yes, WC, you are correct.

A possible reason is that it IS my REAL buy price and I'm willing to get it for that & no more.
Another (hypothetically) could my beleif that the price will go down in the near future but I'm still being willing to offer what I beleive is a reasonable and RATIONAL price today at CURRENT market levels (factoring in my assessment of the possible timing of future pop increases).
Another possible reason is that I just want to help push up the price for any number of reasons (which I won't elaborate on).
Another could be that I want to see who bids, how much, & when - "market research"
Another could be a beta test of a new anti-snipe approach to winning auctions with up front human interaction.
Another could be that I just felt like it.
Another could be that I'm just nuts.
I'm EMPHATICALLY NOT saying that any are right or wrong either partially or completely but some may say the first 2 look like good bets while others may say the last 2 are right on target - you'll have to be kept in suspense on this one. LOL
What is your "full buy price"? A secret?
Finally: "It would appear to some that you attempted to influence the price, although I doubt this was the case"
Are you saying that you doubt I was attempting to influence the price or that you doubt the I did influence the price?
</STRONG>Are you saying that you doubt I was attempting to influence the price or that you doubt the I did influence the price? >>
Um, er, both?
Mitch will vouch for me on this on.

Wondercoin.
See their previous eBay purchases. Amazing they were NEVER outbid? Interesting that this was about 3-4 times MORE THAN the amount they EVER spent on 1 item.
Gee, you think there's a new player?
<< <i>do I even need to add "yeah, rrrright >>
What an obnoxious implication. I don't see anything wrong in the links that you provided. Care to elaborate?
This just meant that I DON'T beleive (my opinion & I'm entitled to it) that this particular bidder IS a new BIG player in the Memorial market. Period. (I edited the above <<...>> out to eliminate the POSSIBILITY that I might offend someone else who ALSO misunderstood its' implication).
The implication is that the buyer doesn't SEEM to genuinely want the particular item in question (simply based on my assessment of his past purchase choices and spending levels) - for whatever reason (but hey, people constantly surprise you). I hope he wasn't just trying to mess with the seller. I hope he pays for it. If not I'm ready for the second chance offer. Sorry if that sounds obnoxious. What did you think I meant???
If the buyer is a board member I'd be VERY interested to know why the FIRST coin they ever bought on eBay EVER (at least under this user ID) was not only a cent, not only a Lincoln, not only a Lincoln Memorial, not only a TOP POP Lincoln Memorial, but a TOP POP Lincoln Memorial that was over $1,000. Just seems a strange way to jump into this game. I'd love to know if there was another big player emerging from the shadows. Perhaps this WAS his way of telling all that should know - "HERE I AM & I'M READY TO PLAY" - I don't know. Hey, if that IS what it WAS, that's GREAT news for you sellers
had someone else (a friend) put it in for them!!! The winner must have had something more
important to do than LIVE on the boards all day
I guess those grapes taste mighty sour.

Put me down for 1K at your 2 to 1 odds. This is a no joke serious post.
PCGS THE ONLY WAY TO GO

Inquiring minds want to know ... unless I missed something or it is late (and I can't think straight) ... or maybe that is why gambling is for the mathematically challenged ...
I love Ike dollars and all other dollar series !!!
I also love Major Circulation Strike Type Sets, clad Washingtons ('65 to '98) and key date coins !!!!!
If ignorance is bliss, shouldn't we have more happy people ??
Of course, but if you noticed a lot of the posts other than mine, many DON'T THINK THE POPS WILL EVER GO UP AND I PREVIOUSLY SAID I BELEIVED THAT THEY WOULD - & FAIRLY SOON. I also "predicted" in another thread that this coin would sell for between $950 & $1,150 - I guess I just don't know the market - OR THE PLAYERS - at all!!!
Of course the gambling thing IS TOTALLY HYPOTHETICAL (I don't want to get banned for being the first bookie of the pops) , but to answer your question: If you are "betting" that the extra 4 WON'T get made, it is MORE likely they WON'T get made by 10/31 - the "favorite" - (my birthday by the way - which may explain a few things to y'all ), than that they WON'T get made by 12/31 - the "longshot" - i.e. time is your enemy and the more time you "give me" for them to get made the higher the probability of them getting made and thus the more you are going to want to be compensated (in the form of higher odds) to give me that time. Wouldn't I have to offer you, say 100:1 if I said that the pops will double in, say, the next 10 years to get you to "bet"? By the same token, wouldn't you be willing to give me 100:1 (or have me only give you 1:100) if I said the pops will double by tommorrow? You always get lower odds on the favorite relative to the longshot don't you? I think that you did conceptually "get it" but weren't clear which side I was on - the "house" or the "player".
November 1st!!!
Pop still at 4 on 1971-s pcgs ms 67 red lincolns.
I thought there were more to be made by now.
Haven't you heard? link
Someone quoted an "expert" saying that the now pop 2 73-D in 67 (currently TWICE as rare - or half the pop of the 71-S) will be AT LEAST pop 14 in 2 years. I guess (since they are the "Father of modern Lincoln's" and they MUST be right) that that also means that the 71-S will be pop 16 (if still 2 more than or pop 28 if still double) in 2 years. So set the clock for 10/29/05 - if I'm still wrong, you'll have 2 people (or 3) to flame. Now that's a pop explosion we should all fear!
"Your message board conversation with Roger is interesting. You should pose this question: Two years from now, will there be more 1973D ms67’s ... than 1990D ms69’s? Certainly, the pop of the 1973D should exceed the pop of the 1990D by least a dozen or more. Case closed!!! "

p.p.s. Thanks. I needed a good laugh today. The boards have been a little slow.

Actually the buyer never bought another coin on eBay BEFORE OR SINCE but amazingly a second one became "available" a few days after the auction ended.
p.s. you resurrected it
the old 1971-s thread we had so much fun with! thanks for the response on it Roger. See you in the auctions and message boards!

You probably already voted but it would be great to hear your opinion in the mint set/ BU roll thread.
<< <i>I have NO first hand knowledge of the subject, but everyone I know making the coins (a fair number of people) is getting them out of rolls & bags. >>
Is this in reference to only the cents? Does it apply to the post 1964 coins?
Of course you'll have to look at someone's registry set to see the REAL pop.
