Dated gold

Noted that you haven't recommended dated gold for some time. I would appreciate a breakdown of your analysis especially as relates to New Orleans, Charlotte and Dahlonega gold. Should I wait for better prices before making major purchases? Thanks for your advice. David

The circulated "dated gold" market was heavily promoted in the 1996-2001 time frame. Prices went way up. Prices have now come down again and some of the coins seem attractice. I do not believe this market is going to be promoted again in the near future and I would stay away from many of the issues.

That said, The Dahlonega, Charlotte and Carson City coins are truly rare and are great coins. If you know what you're doing, this is an OK area.

I would stay away from the other mints, except for the true rarities. Basically, look for the really rare coins with low mintages and low total populations in all grades. Stay away from the large population coins and coins with low pops in top grades but very high pops in all grades.
