Acowa, the last 67 Petroclli PSA8 on ebay sold for $203!
This latest buyer saved $64.50. Granted it is still a lot of $$$ for a common, but there a quite a few 67 Sox that carry a premium.

Petrocelli is a popular player in just about any set. He's one of those "commons" that rarely sells for a common price (regardless of population) and that SMR never seems to take into account.

  • Alan, aren't you glad you completed your '67 set during the low price days? I know I am.image

If I had Basilone's cahones (or gray matter?), I'd sell my 8's and wait a while to buy them back.

Ooh-fah, $178 for a card with a population of 62? Does Mike Shannon get a royalty off the sales of his cards? I've been toying with the idea of getting into this set for a few months now, but decided to get out before I got in too deep. Looks like I picked the right time to jettison.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

    Funny story...

I found a nice 1967 Petrocelli in a binder at this years National and walked Eric Sanders (ejguru) over to the table and handed him the binder and told him to take a look at the Petrocelli. He takes a look at it and says it's a POS (or something to that effect). So I pull out the Petrocelli behind the one he looked at (I had tucked it away for safekeeping to give myself a chance to find him) and asked him if he liked that one any better. Long story short...I think he got an 8 back from PSA.

Yes Alan--it did 8. I now have two of them--probably will resubmit my original one next 60's special because it is much closer to Mint 9 quality than the A.C. card.

And remind me to charge you for pre-grading those Tall Boy Hockey cards for you image

    Enjoy....

Petrocelli goes for a nice premium in the '69 set as well. Though those '67s are going for strong prices, they aren't cheap in raw form if they are in top grade. I've started shying away from pricey raw high numbers lately. If you're smart about it, the cards with decent populations can usually be had for the same or lower amount than the cost of purchasing the raw card and grading it. And there's no risk in not getting the grade when you buy it already graded. I saw several nice '65 high numbers at the SF show this weekend. But at $10-$15 apiece, I'm glad I passed on them. It looks like many don't sell for $20+. The '67 high number SP's will usually sell for $20+ in raw form. I don't track the '67 auctions very closely. Do most high numbers sell for $40+? If not, I'll likely not be chasing those raw cards either.

I've been bidding on '67 PSA 9's on eBay since 1999 and I'm very certain that this is a record for a common:

'67 Topps Don Demeter PSA 9 for $410.99

Oddly enough, the winner is Nick of VSI. The reality of this auction is that this is a Pop 2 card and not a 1. I hope this price brings more Demeters out of the closet. It really is one of the hardest cards in the set, and the fact that it's Red Sox, doesn't make it any easier to get. I wonder what a PSA 9 Duke Sims or Jack Hamilton would go for?

As for '67s in general, yes they are hot, especially in 9 if a certain collector needs it. I sold a '67 Pat Jarvis PSA 8 on eBay for $127 about 6 weeks ago. That was a shock.
  • Dude is exactly right. After a brief lull, PSA graded 1967s have really picked up. 1967 is a very tough year due to centering, the method of cutting on the semi-highs and high numbers, and relatively poor card stock -- much tougher, in fact, than many other years from the 1960s. I would look for some of the prices on the PSA top pops to continue to rise.

I will put my 1967 Demeter up against that card any day. And to think it's one of my threads where MW and Dan agree on something...I am starting to tear up.

With respect to the Sims card:

This 8 just closed for $261. What's funny is that I had one on EBAY at 225 BIN a few months ago with no takers...that ended up selling direct for around $200. I believe if a 9 shows up on EBAY, DSL will be selling it.

  • Gem,

We busted up a 67 set last month sold the high in raw form in nrmt fashion. Any centered sp went
for ranges of 35-65. I myself couldn't believe it even the cards at 90-10 in centering were bringing 15-25.

Attention SportsModerator!! I think someone just hacked MW's account and is writing nice messages about me and PSA! (Just kidding!)

Gosh MW! What did I/we do to deserve this? image By the way, congrats on the '67 Philly PSA 9 Checklist #198. That went a lot higher than I expected.

Acowa -- Yes, your's in the best example I've seen. I'd take your's over either 9. Both 9's have marginal eye appeal.

    Dan,

Interesting footnote....the Demeter card represents the only time I ever won an EBAY auction that skylaneflyer bid on.

I picked up one of the set busters (a 1967 Romano card) at the National which is in the same category of tough as Hamilton and Sims. I would sell it for $200. If anyone's interested...

  • Dude & Acowa, not sure I want to be either MW or BOTN. Can't I be FatCat instead?
  • acowaacowa Posts: 945 ✭✭
    Mike,

In your mind...you can be whomever you want...and I am sure there's a three page explanation that proves it. I honestly don't care one way or another. Having you on the CU boards livens things up...so I hope you can stay awhile this time before you get booted. You must be bored out of your mind on the SGC boards.

    Regards,

    Alan
  • Acowa, okay, you're right. MW is kind of legendary around here. I'll be him.
  • acowaacowa Posts: 945 ✭✭
You did an excellent job "impersonating" him on this thread...you did so well that you even got MW to respond on the SGC boards. I would give you pretty high marks...keep up the good work.

Honestly, we WANT you on the CU boards. Every good thriller needs a bad guy.

    Alan

  • Acowa, stop trying so hard. I already said I'd be him. If you keep being argumentative, I just might change my mind.
  • acowaacowa Posts: 945 ✭✭
If you're going to be him...get with it already and start making some stuff up.

    Regards,

    Alan
  • Acowa, I don't have to. I've clearly derailed this thread without even trying. If that's not MW-esque, I don't know what is.

    This is fun! image

That's why you're the man! Not everyone understands and appreciates your value to the boards like I do. Nothing like a good train wreck to get the boards jump started again.

  • OK so this is a reply to a September posting but I'm new here.

My first Petrocelli 8 was $135 in ebay after going years without seeing one graded in any
form; next one was an ungraded that I paid msrs $47 for and sent it in.

Kept the better of the 2, put the other one up for $75 buy it now and it went very quickly!

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
