My adventure....

Hi gang! This story is slow getting started so bear with me....

Just went and walked all over the annual local coin show near my home..... so tired I can hardly move..... I just got home..... That place was strange this year.... It was a raw coin madhouse. You could barely find a slab anywhere and the coins that were put out for sale did not have the dealer's opinion on what the grade was, they just let you judge for yourself....

So there I was.... My trusty loop by my side, my 300 pound size to push thru the crowds, and I was haggling the hell out of the dealers.... It was like the days before slabs. I was loving it.

Gold was EVERYWHERE. I do not think anyone had a case without gold in it. I have to admit I bought some gold while I was there because I found an exceptional piece.

1945-S "Micro" Mercury Dimes were at quite a few tables as well for some reason. The worst one I saw was about AU-50 and the best would of been MS-65+ without a doubt. I would of bought the best one I found, but the dealer would not haggle with me on the price and kept telling me the price of silver and gold right now. So I just passed the coin over and went on to another dealer. He was new there anyhow, perhaps he will learn by next year.

What makes me laugh is how much dealers help each other and how well they know me out at my local show.... After I walked on down a little, I heard that dealer that I walked away from and another one talking.....

Dealer 1 : "I was behind him trying to tell you to sell him that dime at ANY price so you could do more business with him!"
Dealer 2 : "What is the big deal? I will sell it to someone else."
Dealer 1 : "Because Yonce did it and he buys like hell from him. Yonce might only be making a drop off of him each sale, but he comes comes out making more in the long run."
Dealer 2 : "So your saying up my prices to this guy and then haggle down?"
Dealer 1 : "HELL NO! You give it to him at cost if you have to is what I am saying. He will buy other stuff off of you without trying to haggle sometimes and you will make your money back. He knows the values. He also has enough sense to know that you did not buy this stuff yesterday and if you sold it to him at below book then you would still be making a profit."

Yonce is another dealer... he also had the exceptional gold piece that I bought this year. He is and has been for many years my favorite there. And when you walk in with a Gold money clip of 100's to go coin shopping, they take notice. image They also take notice of who can pick out a truly good coin and who cannot. I felt so proud. But I did feel sort of funny that they knew me so well as to know all that. I am not that open to those at that show about my habits, but I see they are watching and remember me well.

  • Sounds like you had a great time. Now more importantly what kind of gold!

  • Oh nothing fancy.... it was a 1/10th oz. 1993 Gold Bullion coin. I am still looking at it just TRYING to hunt for a darn flaw.... I am normally not intrested in the newer bullion coins but you know me and the St. Gaudens design.....

    ok ok..... here it is......

Imagine ALL of e-bay on tables..... we have had close to a million people attend this before. It is far more than just coins, and it overtakes our little town for four days.....

There is one centeral building that is devoted to coins and guns. Also, among the thousands of tables all over the place there are other people that have small cases of coins where you can find circulated coins and sometimes the odd rare one. It is like the inventor of e-bay visited our town while this was going on and that is where he got the idea from. As far as slabs go there never is a ton there, but this year there was none to find and it was a total raw coin bonanza.

    Now the gold.....

If you mean my gold..... I still am hunting for a flaw.... and now thinking about sending it in..... I have a 17X loop and am having one hell of a hard time. It WILL break MS-65. I rarely own stuff that is less than that. You see, the dealers are tied down by the redbook there when it comes to raw coins. I have the latest edition laying right next to me now. So even as gold skyrockets, people will not pay no more than what is in the redbook for a superb raw coin. I KNOW that I am getting away with murder, but it is how all the dealers up here know the game is played too and their profits are adjusted accordingly.

The gold at the show was MASSIVE ammounts of bullion coins. St. Gaudens were coming out of the woodwork too but they were circulated. I found a 1907 St. Gaudens and he wanted 460 bucks for it. I truly liked that coin but it had been circulated a bit and was in the XF range. I saw several gold half eagles from the late 1800's. But Eagles and especially Double Eagles were the name of the game if you wanted old gold this year.

    Silver.....

Silver was doing generally good.... But Mercs were total hell on wheels. Anything from a common date G-4 to the finest they had to offer was flying out the door. Yonce just ate his sandwich in front of his merc case because it was so bad and people were asking to look at stuff so often.

    State Quarters.....

Same as ever.... people are missing one and run in and buy it because they cannot find it in their junk change. All they want it for is to fill up whatever holder they got. But it keeps the money flowing to the dealers.....

    Mint Sets/Proof Sets....

Not moving much at the show this year. Only ones are people hunting a special year such as a birth year and that is it. I found that odd.

So there you have it in a nutshell..... tell me your opinion.
