Earlier in the year someone made a comment to the effect that high series cards were easier to find in higher grades and I sort of scoffed at it at first. But then I found that many of the cards I still need for my raw '65 set were low numbers, your prices realized above tend to agree with many of the high numbered cards softer than their low numbered counterparts, at least compared to SMR.

I also think that while there is always that group of cards for each set that are extremely hard to find in even PSA 8 condition (ie. Charlie Smith) there are that many others that almost seem plentifull in high grade. I can't tell you how many times I've found a really nice card at Setbuilders or other dealers only to find that I already have it. And it always seems to be the same players. High grade '65 Billy O'Dells and Dick Tracewskis for everyone!

JOHN - Some you hit below smr and some you hit the jackpot, like $75.01 on the Tommy John and the $108.50 on the Pirates team. But overall its pretty consistent w/ the smr guide price. I sold over 575 diff psa-8 '65's whwn I busted my set (at 96.6%). And when it was all said and done I got smr for them all. I sold 75-100 of the tough ones at higher levels, and the remainder to Stump at a discounted level, and when all was said & done, I got a few dollars over SMR, perhaps selling the set at 102-105% - so with the exception of a few Charlie Smith type low pops, it is pretty accurate on '65's. ...jay

That is neat info I think I am a couple of those. Still need 30 to cmplete the set and 39 to complete in 8 and above. I hope to be there by December.

I should clarify....when talking about crazy prices for high pop PSA 8s...I mean bids close to or at SMR levels. Most high POP 8s..including those high numbers that Brumbach spoke of can be had for 50-70% of SMR (before shipping).

    Jay-

When it comes to 1965's (as you know)....it depends you "buy in" at. For me...selling overall at or above Smr overall was a VERY NICE return for me.

JOHN - On your other post (in the '67 cello thread) I mentioned that timing (luck) is everything, and I mentioned that I remembered your Bo Sox Team card going for crazy $. While looking through your '65's you sold this summer you had 2 Red Sox Team cards, 1 selling for $17.83 and the next one for $51.02 - This prompts me to point out to all who think the SMR should reflect eBay sales, it tells me what a daunting task this will be...jay

when you add a few bucks for shipping and such there are hardly any cards under SMR.

so if you buy a card at 10 bucks w/ a SMR of 18 it might sound like a good deal but after paying shipping ( 3 bucks) and then losing another dollar or so when selling it (paypal, ebay fees) your cost might be 14 or so .

i find it hard to believe that anyone can make a living turning cards on ebay.

however w/ enough luck and a lot of info and knowledge about certain issues a person can at least manage enough of a profit that they can build a collection and barely spent any money. ( although defenetly a lot of time ..for sure)

I think John's results prove one thing:

If John can make money at it, anybody can.imageimageimage

Seriously, though. You bet money can be made buying and selling on ebay. But it's a lot better if you have a good eye, buy raw, stay away from the grader of death and hit the home run on timing the sale.

A lot has to go right, but like anything else in life, a little effort can result in nice profits. I know from pretty good sources at least two guys on this board make some nice profits using graded cards and ebay.

    LOL...

You have to know when to hoard them...and know when to auction them.
