10 COLLECTORS ONLY.......

Here's a fun little thread to think about.....

Tell us about the 10 collectors that you would have the most fun with at a major show.

'Ya know...the guys you like to sit at tables with, sorting cards and old stories. Or maybe, the group of guys (gals too) that are just too fun NOT to be with, as the "team" goes about cherry pickin' the dealers or having a Coke together waiting in line for an autograph.......

One simple rule........ONLY 10 ! ......I know most of the Registry Guys will say "There are more than 10...or I'm sure I'm leaving somebody out...etc... Don't sweat it..We all want to be with all the board members, but this list is only for 10.

In no set order.....

My 10:

1) THEGEMMINTMAN
2) Zardoz
3) Jay Wolt (Qualitycards)
4) Machodoc
5) Stump
6) Frank Bakka
7) Ron Ritt
8) Frank Smith
9) Joe Tauriello (Setbuilders)
10) All the other Registry Guys (couldn't resist...image)

I've spoke w/ quite a few on the phone as well like John Basilone, Rob E, Wayne Ellis, Dave Jacobs, Carey Craft and even Zardoz, although he states its a wrong #.....So Who Would I like to meet? - How about all the anonymous posters who hide from us with no name or love for sports or our hobby and post just to bust balls...jay

    Outstanding thread!

Too bad that we have to limit it to 10. Now I'm going to get nasty PM's from people bemoaning the fact that I left them off, and that they'll never speak to me again.

    1. King Kellogg.........a whacko guy

    2. Gemmintman........again, a total whacko

    3. theBobs...........evil sense of humor. Totally sick and should be committed

    4. Vargha..........promised to buy me lunch and I'm going to make sure that he does!

    5. FB.......adds a serious air, but beneath that exterior is a good sense of humor

    6. Jay Wolt .......... No card gathering would be complete without him.

    7. Murcerfan.........Here's a guy who brings his own straight jacket when travelling

    8. Griffins........Sends me gifts! and I went to high school with his sister

    9. Castaldi......A great collector who is unappreciated around here.

    10. Acowa........A sense of humor so dry that it is considered a dessicant.

    11. It sucks that I can't name more of you guys. If you feel slighted and have the to urge to send
a scathing PM, remember that it is King Kellogg's idea to limit the list to 10, so send them
    to him instead.

Most of the obvious choices have already been mentioned and I can't really narrow it down to 10 anyways...so I figured that I would add a few notable people that have been left off many lists that I can tell you from first hand experience ... could keep you entertained for days... guys like Bob Cacamese (gaspipe26) and Ron Rittlinger (I hope I spelled these names right) have experiences to share that are "wet your pants" type funny.

There are also some knowledgeable guys that I have been able to meet that I have not seen on many lists that are very intersting... both Ron's (Twinron and Mitochondia) are really very intersting guys to meet. I would also put Rob McBride in the category of interesting guys who haven't been mentioned. Lastly, Shane (1954) is someone you should try to catch up with if you get the chance. And really lastly, Steve Saldutti is extremely fun to swap 1967 Topps war stories with if you are so inclined.

Luckily, I am usually able to hook up with the summit group at The National every year. Which I would highly reccommend to anyone.

There are a few guys that I really would like to introduce myself to that I haven't met personally like Tony (aconte) and Matthew Natale (Va Yank) and Jay (Quality Cards) and Mike Bow (toppsgun) and John (Basilone). I would also like to have the opportunity to thank Paul Moss for all of his help in the past. He is one funny guy. It would also be great if Carlos Aponte could make next years National and meet everyone.

This past National I was able to hang out with Eric Sanders and live like a rock star for a few days...but it gets old having all those young beautiful women trying to get his autograph and take pictures with him while you're trying to scrounge around for sportscards.

    Regards,

    Alan

Great thread. Can't name just 10--

Steve Saldutti (No, I won't give you any more 1967 PSA 9's!), ACOWA (my brother from another mother), Neal (my other brother from still a different mother), Ron Ritt (Crazy Ron!), Ray B. and the Downeys, Jay W. (Hope you enjoyed my 65's--even for a brief moment!). Gaspipe--What a life--"Picking out sets from the Topps factory across the street!"

Would've loved to chat longer at A.C. with Shane (Mr. Cello opener), Machodoc (I can actually like a politician!), Dude (Mr. Class) and for pure zanyiness--KING KELLOGG. I promised to start a K set--still trying to choose the right one for me.

Hoping to meet for the first time: Stump--at least once before you pass me by on the 1967 set; Zardoz--the biting sense of humor; Pack Collector--someone else who tears into vintage cello like liberating prisoners of war.

As I prepare for yet another school year, I definitely can look back and say from last Labor Day to today has been the most fun I've had in the hobby and I can honestly say it wouldn't be so without having met most of you guys. Anyway, I'll need the help after the Red Sox send me to the insane asylum again in about 4-5 weeks! image

Well, I have to give a copout answer: My favorites are everyone who posts on here. Everybody has a unique contribution to our hobby and these forums. I do want to make special mention of our friends who we lost in the past year, Dom and Tuneman.

By the way, I had the pleasure of meeting Joe from Setbuilders at the SF show this weekend. As expected, he's a class act as everyone attested to. He also has some nice cards at reasonable prices! image

I think we all just listed people who for the most part share the same collecting interests as we do. It doesn't mean we wouldn't like hanging out with anyone else. I met a bunch of board memebers at the Registry Luncheon who don't collect what I collect, and I thought they were very interesting and fun people to hang out with.

    Stupendous thread men!

I've mingled so many terrific collectors on this board and met many of you in person such as:

King Kellogg -- This guy is a hoot! Anyone who attended the Registry Banquet knows what I mean!

Zardoz -- Funny as the come! I was fortunate to met Paul and his son at a Tri-Star show in Houston about a year ago.

Gemmintman -- Fantastic guy and a collectoring legend. Look at '70 Kellogg's & '64 Giants sets in the Registry and you'll know why this guy lives up to his name!

Acowa -- This guy really knows how to break up the boredom on this board!

Buckwheat -- Sharp as a stick. I've always been impressed with his messages on this board and has the ultimate '61 Topps set.

RonRitt -- This guy is amazing and has more amazing stories to share. It's worth the trip to the National just to visit him.

Ejguru -- This guy is a one of the last pioneers of the hobby. He searches for those hard to find, high grade cards by buying unopened vintage material.

mikeschmidt -- It's impressive how knowledgeable he is for his age. Can you imagine this guy's collection in 20 years!

Gaspipe26 -- Has some great stories about growing up near the Topps factory and aquiring some awesome finds the last 20 years.

FB -- Great guy! Only wish we chatted more at the National!

Wayne Ellis -- A super fun guy and has put together a few impressive sets in recent years too!

Ron Hobbs -- Another hard core collector. This guy goes all out on a set and gets every variation for a given set, even the ones with the different colored backs issued in the '50s'. He's "Mr. Variation".

Mitochondria -- It may be a long time when his '69 set is complete, but it will be the best when it's done.

Toppsgun -- Best friend in the hobby and beyond.

RayBShotz -- Another terrific guy who really loves this great hobby.

There are probably another dozen that I've met that are also fantastic guys and super collectors. But there are 10 that I still haven't met and would really enjoy meeting:

My first inclination is to list ten (10) Dan Markels, since I've been following him around at card shows for 13 years, picking up his discards and ending up with solid PSA 8 sets. But since there is only one dudeimage, I'd list any ten people who are willing to tell (true, or mostly true) stories of WHERE THEY FIND THEIR RAW CARDS. They have to be either set builders like myself or possess a significant ability to supply other set builders with raw cards or stories about raw cards:

    1. Baseball Card Kid Mark Murphy (doesn't post, but he's #1, based on my criteria, above).
    2. A spokesman for Al Rosen (Rosen wouldn't be allowed to attend).
    3. Charles Merkel
    4. Norty (Joe T.)
    5. Buckwheat (Rob McBride)
    6. Saldutti
    7. Acowa
    8. kbarn37 ('63 collector, not on boards due to technology cramps).
    9. sayitaintsojoe (John McLeod)
    10. Dan "dude" Markel (to keep everyone else honest).
    11. Basilone (1st alternate if kbarn37 isn't allowed due to board absence)

Yep, that's it. Pretty much covers the years I collect.

Just 12? 4 years ago when I got back into the hobby after a 20 year+ absence the thing I remembered most was how everyone pulled together to help each other. The really nice thing to see was that after 20 years the names and faces had (mostly) changed, but the same feeling was carried thru. In the last year I've met more really great people here than a lifetime anywhere else. My only regret is that even though I get to talk to some people daily I may never get a chance to meet them face to face, and others only a few times a year. If I could, here's the ones that would be top on my list, in no particular order

    1. Zardoz- cards or not, a sense of humor that sharp is one not to be missed.
    2. Murcer- talk to him on the phone several times a week, but never met. Like listening to a dj, I'm sure he'll look nothing like I picture! The best part of meeting him would be that whatever he says can't be edited 10 minutes later, like he does to all his posts!
    3. King Kellogg-played a little trick on him a few months back nearly resulting in his untimely demise from a massive coronary. Payback is a b*tch, I'm still waiting Larry!
    4. Basilone- for solving one of lifes great mysteries for me. He needs to visit the area named after his relatives in S.D.- my second favorite place on the planet
5 The locals- guys I've never met or only met once or twice that live very near me- Dan Studebaker, Greg (Botn), PC, Vargha, Satan, Dan Kneer.
    6. Brian C Daniels (BcD, aka Caramels) Another guy I talk to all the time. We'd have to make sure he's on his meds, and there are no children present, as he makes Hannibal Lectur seem like a spinster librarian. A Marlon Perkins- style tranquilizer gun full of thorazine must always be close at hand.
    7. Marty Pritchard (Marty on the board) Sense of humor so dry it would make the Sahara seem humid in comparison.
    8. Jay Wolt- just because.
    9. LuxuryWines - Because we'll have to pick out wine since Murcer can down a kegger by himself after all this training he's doing. Besides, Jeff has some very cool sets.
    10. Peter Garcia, Ken Harrington, Levi Bleam. Guys I deal with all the time but never pick up the phone to call, let alone meet. Time to buy them a drink.
    11. Carlos Aponte- because we're all pulling for him, and cutting loose with friends can be the 2nd best therapy there is (after hearing your own kids laughter)
    12. My son, Griffin. Because he'll see that having good friends is the best part of life, regardless of where you are or what you're doing.
I'm sure I forgot many, and for that I apologize. This is a list in progress and in no way should be construed as final!
Helluva guest list, when are you guys all coming out here?

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Satan is disappointed he was not included in more top ten lists. Satan has feelings too. I was going to come out at the Hollywood Park Show, but now I'm staying incognito. Don't even try to pick me out. I'm a 47 year old mother of four. And, forget about dusting for prints. I've removed them like Kevin Spacey in SEVEN. Just know, I'll be in your midst this weekend acting like all the other card browsing bumpkins. I'll listen to your conversations and figure out who you are. Then, I'm going to kick the crapp out of you at valet parking and take all your regional issues (Lothar and Murcerfan are exempt). I just hope my body heat doesn't set off the sprinkler system in the room because I've read water on cardboard and ink equals trouble.

    Recommitted to being bad,

    Satan
