OT: Funny Cide and Empire Maker scratched from Travers

What a shame. That Saratoga nightlife must've got 'em.
I can't remember the last time the field was only 6, certainly not when the weather is glorious like it is today.

So who do you like?

I'm on Strong Hope.

Murcer , I'm a little late responding to this as some of us poor souls have to work on Saturday's ! If only it had rained today ,I would have taken the day off as I do not deliver mail in the rain ( JUST LIKE NEWMAN ) ! So , Murcer Man , you like to bet on the ponies. I would have bet on Ten Most Wanted with Pat Day riding him - just my luck - he wins , and I can't make it to the OTB ! Maybe horse racing will make a rebound now with the new Seabisquit movie out ! Glad to meet a fellow horseracing fan ! Robby

    Robby,
I lived in saratoga for about 10 years and lived at (and occasionally off) the track in August.
I'm picky now and just ride down for one or two choice weekdays each year.
The crowd on Travers day has gotten pretty intense lately.
I managed to lose on "No Hope" anyways, thanks to that damn peace rules and the silly speed deul they ran.
They handed it to Day this time; he has made me many $$ in the past, usually he has to be more creative. This time I figured I'd go with the hot hand in Valasquez, I remember when he came up under Angel cordero's wing, he must've been all of 16 or 17.
I always look for horses that get unbeatable when they get to the Spa.
Do you remember Four Star Dave ??
(now that horse paid for some Stahl-Meyers along the way)
How about my water-skiing pal Diane Nelson (what a knockout)?
    anyhow..............I digress.
  • I'm a big horse racing fan, being from Louisville KY, home of the KY Derby.

You don't need to go to the track or to the OTB to bet anymore....if you have high-speed access go to You Bet.com. They have rights to dozens of tracks and the money that comes in over the net goes to increase the purses and help the industry unlike those off-shore scams. I use it and own stock in the company.

That kind of sounds like a commercial or some spam, but oh well....Its nice to see some fellow pony playas.....
  • Youbet.com is very good. I also recommend it.

I passed on betting this race, but what the heck was Jerry Bailey thinking about? He pressed the pace so much it was amazing he finished second with Peace Rules.

    Gemmint.
No doubt, now if there was no other speed than pulling off the old Saratoga 'wire to wire' act might have worked, but when they busted 3/4 in under 1:10 both were doomed. I gotta say i was amazed that either of them could stagger across the line in the money, that's what a lousy 6 horse field will get ya.

The grade 1 stakes races there are almost always sucker bets, but I'm just a recreational user these days, so WTF

All those pricey Maiden Special Wieghts things they run with odds on "next big thing" favorites are for the birds too.

The best races at the Spa are the turf allowance races where they offer 40k or better, lots of shippers and good odds.

The best thing about the Spa is that about 1/2 the money being wagered is "idiot money" (ie, granny playing her lucky number), the pools get big enough to hide the smart money on many occasions.

Thanks for the link, I have a hook up through NYRA, only simulcasted out of state races though.
  • You yo-yo's probably agree with Secretariet being included with ESPN's finest atheletes of the last century.

I take that back. Only Murcerfan thinks so.

    Noooooo.
But now that you've turned this into a garbage thread...
........ I'll bet Soriano is a better jockey than either you or Berry Bonds.
Ever seen a jockey wear ear-rings?

  • Robby, they're a reputable site. Jockey Chris McCarron did many radio ads for Youbet.com. Also and I won a fair amount of money on Youbet.com a few months ago (betting harness of all things), and they sent me the check with no problem.

    Ah...the fix was in.

  • Robby-
No you don't need high speed access, but it sure does help. When my Dad was sick he used to plug his laptop into the hospital phone lines, boot up AOL and bet the ponies. It was a little jerky, but it was still pretty amazing. All the doctors used to come in and check it out. I mean here he was betting tracks all over the country from his hospital bed.

The company is not a fly-by-night type deal. They are very reputable and are growing super fast. They are the only offical betting sight. Most of the other betting sites are just bookies over the net. You bet.com works with the tracks and the industry to add money to the purses and not just take money from legit OTBs and the tracks. Check them out http://www.youbet.com/faq/

What kind of extra take $$ do they gouge you for?
  • There is a montly fee of $8-15.

But they make the real money from the amount of bet (the handle) and shipped to the tracks(thier main take is on the tracks share of the $$). I don't want to pump it to much, check out the link. I just like the service.
  • If you make a total of $2,500 worth of wagers (not sure what the time frame you need to do this in is) you get unlimited access of all tracks and wagering for FREE for a full year. Needless to say I paid nothing image.

BTW Murcerfan, I only wish the fix was in image.

I'm hesitant to use Youbet. They've had problems with their stock and operating losses. I'm concerned that my account might disappear if they do.

    Mantlefan-
    Read this

Trust me- this company ain't going anywhere.
  • Mantlefan, why not just maintain a small balance if you're concerned or take out your profits image right after you win. Really, don't worry about it.

mrc32, Thanks for that info. I've read several articles in the Racing Form about the company's problems, but they seem to have turned the corner. I'm opening an account now.

Mantle- No prob. They are currently Cash-flow positive minus the money they are putting away to use for a deal they have with with TVG. This company is going gangbusters- growing super fast...and unlike other Dot coms is not burning money right and left. I'd hate to give stock tips...but if you are in the market you might check it out.....

SM1- Sorry this topic has gone WAY off anywhere close to a thread on the PSA set registry.....But us boys love the ponies

it took youbet awhile but now they pay within a couple days.
they used to use an outside service and it would take as long
as two weeks to see the money.their site is the best on
the planet and easiest to use.what i dont care for is when looking
at multiple races at times one can accidentally wager on race 5 instead
of 4 and no refunds....cost me a small bundle just the other day.
diane nelson from suffolk downs .... cute but never made it big.
i knew a trainer she dated in florida..poor guy hung himself i'm told.
