Well, I just received word on my latest invoice, 4097346. I am working on a 71 Topps baseball set in PSA 7 or better and thought I would take advantage of the $8.00 registry special.
I sent in 34 semi-hi to hi number commons from the 71 set with the goal of getting 7s or better on each card. Amazingly, I hit on 33 out of the 34 cards; needless to say, I am pleased! My one miss was a 7 (st). Not sure what happened there. I will be interested to get that card back to give it the once over. I was mildly surprised that I hit 8s on seven of the 71s. I will take that!
For fun, I also pulled what I believe to be the sharpest commons from my 1974 Topps set. I sent in a total of eight cards from the 74s with the belief each card was a 9 with a shot at a 10. I whiffed here; I hit 9s I only 3 of the 8 cards. Why did I not just submit more 71s instead? That would have been better for me. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.
In addition, I was able to recently pick up a nice fresh run of some 72 commons for a good price. I picked out the best of that lot and sent in five cards. I graded four 8s and 1 9. I was hoping to have a higher 9 ratio on those cards. Another failed experiment on my part.
The final card I sent in was a checklist Chicago Cardinals card from the 1959 Topps football set. I knew it to be a definite 8 with a chance at a 9. It came back an 8. I don't really collect football so I will probably sell this one.
Overall, I am quite excited about the number of 71s I will be able to add to my set. Kudos to PSA for the fast turn around time!
