My 1923-S Mercury Graded MS63!

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
Just received the good news!

My NGC MS61 1923-S that I sent in as a crossover that did not cross was broken out and sent in Raw. The result arrived today. I guess I should always break-em out.

The bad news was my 1925 = Body Bag! (I though this one was fine -- there isn't even any hairlines on the coin. I don't get it, but with the 1923-S coming back as 63--Who Cares!

I won't be passing, but the score should rise a bit.

That's a good story and lesson at the same time.

I guess if you break a coin out of an others company's holder the coin gets better????

Sorry to hear about the 1925 but the news about the 1923-S is just great!

    Pat,

I would not have believed it if it didn't happen to me. But it is simply POLITICS! The coin is not good enough to cross at MS60 when you send it in the competitions holder. Break it out and get the grade it deserves.

Some day at a larger coin some of the mercury dime set need to brought to the show so we can see each others beauties. I think that would be some kind of funimage

  • I ALWAYS crack my coins out. They DO consider what the holder is BEFORE they decide the grade.

    Tony,

That is good news indeed - the 63 made up for the '25 for sure!!!!!

    Pat,

Nice idea - perhaps some day - somewhere.

Blunders of cracking.I just recently bought a 1924-D NGC MS 66 FB,looked at it and realy thought this coin had a good chance of 66 In a PCGS holder=came back MS 63 FB.Three point differance??.

whatever you guys do - don't crack out NGC merc's and resubmit w/PCGS. By and large most of the NGC mercs are overgraded. Tony was lucky indeed - this time! JMHO

    Marc,

I'll take luck, but I would like to think the coin is graded correctly at 63.image There is only one small tick on the cheek. The coin looks better than it is represented in my photo.

  • FYI

I got a 2 point UPGRADE on a NGC toned Mercury I sent in raw to PCGS. went from a ms65FB to a PCGS ms67FB.

I ALWAYS crack my coins before sending in for grading.

    edited to add:

of course it depends on the coin
