Basically, the US Mint produces ONE proof set each year. During 1979, and again during 1981 the US Mint changed mintmarks during the year. Reasons for the change are available elsewhere, but the key point is that the proof sets issued in those years could contain either the type 1 or the type 2 mintmark, OR a combination of both on certain denominations. There were fewer type 2 Lincolns produced than type 1's in both years so they are scarcer. Hope this helps. Steveimageimage
  • I don't beleive that it was intentional on the mints part. Same way many varieties and errors were produced.

I think people misread your question to be the "Mints" 1979 proof sets, not the registry set. You should send a note to the set registry folks. While your at it, ask them why the 2003-D Jefferson is not listed for the 1965-Date set, but can be entered (and then shows up under the 2003-P)

I did misread your question. Sorry. I thought you were refering to the US Mint Proof Set, not the PCGS Registry version of the Proof Set.

Roger, I do believe that the US Mint DID know they were making different mintmarks on the coins of 1979 and 1981. It was not an error or mistake. It was planned for. It probably was anticipated that nobody would notice this "minor" change, but, at least in my mind, it is like the small date and large date 1960 and 1970 Lincolns. On the other hand, the 1944 D/S, the 1955, 1972 doubled die varieties and the 1990 no "S" proof Lincolns are true errors in which the US Mint did NOT want sent out. I guess I think of varieties as coins that the mint produced deliberately different with the intent to ship out, while I think of error coins as coins the mint produced in error without intent to ship out.
