coin shop find

I stopped by my local coin shop for "bid board night" tonight (tuesday) and chatted with the dealer about any new material that came in. He took out a box of about 30 proof sets from 1958-62 that he had just bought from a "walk in." He didnt have a chance to go through them yet, but knowing my interest in proof washingtons he said "go ahead, and search for some cameos."

I went through the sets, and found six 1960 quarters that were well frosted, also showing nice clean mirrors.

It's been a while since Ive looked at non-rainbow coins, so this experience got me back to my "roots" of proof washingtons. I really enjoyed myself.

I narrowed the six down to four, and the dealer allowed me to cut the four washingtons out of the mint packaging. gosh, those coins just shimmered when they were on the velvet.

my price -- eleven dollars each for the four 1960 proofs.

Im going to submit them and HOPE for a CAM or DCAM designation. I say "hope" because the frosting is NOT the deepest Ive seen or had before, and I know that pcgs is very strict on cam and dcam designations.

anyway, it was fun to get back to the way I used to collect, and I think it was amazing that coins this nice were still in their original mint envelopes and packaging and were waiting to be "discovered."

if they dont get cam or dcam designations, I know these will be pr69 examples. Im just hoping for the "bonus."

Alan: Coin shop finds like yours are great fun! I must admit, I haven't been to a coin shop in a couple years and I sort of miss finding some neat coins like yours at a couple dollars per coin. I remember it wasn't too long ago when you could buy this fresh stuff. Like an original roll of 1949(p) Wash quarters that yielded me a PCGS-MS67 fully brilliant specimen I still have in my collection. No question this stuff is drying up fast - just try to find an original roll of 49(p) Wash quarters today. image

Mitch, I can appreciate your story about the 49p roll of washingtons as a couple of weeks ago I picked up a bank wrapped roll of 55d washingtons. seven of them were submitted to pcgs about ten days ago, and three more are on "standby" to go if the others come back with "decent" grades. cheers, alan mendelson

That takes me back to my buy of 5 flawed 1959 proof sets on e-bay. The seller stated the halves were badly spotted. They were, and I got the sets for $10 each. But the quarters weren't. And they were cameos! I asked he he had any more sets--17 more purchased at $18 each.

In the end 20 of the 22 Washingtons reside in primarily PR67CAM & PR68CAM holders. 2 missed CAM, and 1 was 66CAM.

    Great fun!
