How Many Graders Does It Take ...

David,

How many graders does it currently take to reach the concensus grade on a PCGS graded coin? Does it depend on the value of the coin?

As an example, let's assume I sent in a raw mint state 1953-S Franklin half that PCGS grades 65FBL. Given the significant difference in market value between a 64FBL anda 65FBL, and the extreme difference in market value between a 65 and a 65FBL, how many graders does PCGS use to examine the coin and arrive at that grade (i.e., in this example 65FBL)?

Thanks,
Greg

    Hi Greg,

In general, it takes two graders to agree on a grade. There are variations. For example, if the first grader is a 64, the second grader a 65, and the third grader a 66, the computer will assign a grade of 65.

After a coin is graded and sealed, it returns to the grading room for verification. The grader must agree with the holder grade. If he does then 3 graders have agreed on the grade. If he doesn't agree, the coin is shown to another grader for a possible change. If he agrees to the change it is made. If he doesn't want the change then the coin stays the same.

We've been using this method for about the last 15 years.
