The registry board has changed

I've been reading and posting here for about 2 years now. I can remember rushing home from work and being excited about reading these board and even checking the posts several times each evening. The information was incredible and the discussions were for the most part very interesting. I think that I probably picked up more information here than I would have in attending 1000 card shows.

Today we still have a lot of informative posts and folks encouraging and congratulating on another but it seems you have to sift through a lot of negative posts of folks continuously slamming psa, other grading companies, sellers, and one another. This has always happened with this board and I'm not saying that it is never inappropriate. But the overall tone of the board is much more combative than it used to be. I've been fortunate enough to meet many of you and there are a lot of great people on these boards! To those who are here just to stir things up - I hope you're not like that in person. Even though I still like reading these boards, it doesn't seem to be nearly as informative and you have to sift through a lot of posts to get to the great information and discussions. I'm not blasting anyone here but does anyone else feel this way??? Have we simply already been through most of the informative discussions about many of the sets so many times that it's all just old hat now. Somebody will probably post for me to just leave if I don't like it (I am really opening myself up on that one) but that's not what I want to do. I need a registry board spam filter to filter out much of the junk. Just my thoughts - feel free to disagree.

  • It sure ain't what it was, but neither is the business. One just has to be patient and sift through the trash to find those hidden gems. Let's face it, without these boards, many of us would never have had the pleasure of meeting so many people with the same interests. Walk around a show and try to find a true vintage collector. Try to find someone with knowledge of some obscure issue. Good Luck!!!!

Here, on the other hand, there is a wealth of information and all you have to do is ask.

Don't let the idiots get to you! Either ignore them or Enjoy them! Persecute them! Make fun of them, and the board ain't such a bad place.
THE FLOGGINGS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES
  • Wayne makes a valid point.

I think what's happening to the Registry Forum is what happened to the Sports Cards Forum over the last few years. A lot of negative trash came in and the board declined in it's usefulness and fun. Having said that this Registry forum is still a good board and hasn't declined nearly to the extent that the Sports Forum did. I would like all the crapola to stay over on the Sports Forum, but we have to work together to make that happen. There were very few of us who tried to keep the Sports Forum a clean place, and it subsequently went to hell. Just my humble opinion...

Not that it's a noble standard, but at least this place is better than the B/S/T board. I think that there can be a saturation point where we have discussed alot of the "new and exciting" stuff. Much of collecting is just accumulating cards for our collections, selling off duplicates and then buying more stuff. Often times the information is no more exciting than "Six months ago card #xx from the 19xx set sold for $450 in PSA 9 on ebay, but recently went for $84 as the population has increased". In a way, it's kind of like being married. I love my wife more than ever after neary 17 years of marriage, but I'm not disappointed that nothing new and exciting has surfaced in the last month. Alot of the collecting is the comraderie as has already been mentioned as well. Lastly, there are the weird people like me, who are best avoided if you want to maintain a decent reputation in society.

WAYNE - You are correct that a majority of posts are negative in nature. Many on the evils of PSA (on their own boards no less!). But in remembering how these boards were 1 and 2 years ago, it was still alot of bickering (although some good natured). There were trolls then as there are now, so as ZARDOZ points out just sift through the mindless garbage till you find a topic or 2 that is suited for you. There are still alot of good people left on these boards...jay

I agree with David....we've pretty much discussed everything there is to talk about. Someone will raise an issue and the response will be: check this link from 6 months ago when we beat the topic to death. Not sure what the solution is.

    Wayne,
I could not agree with you more. It is like that old girlfriend in high school. It was exciting the first four, five times you saw her, now after the tenth date the newness is gone. (Cleaned up, but you get it) There is no excitement on these board anymore. It's like kissing your sister on New Years Eve. image
We need to get back to not only having fun and laughing, but learning about cards. I like having fun just like the next guy, but some of these topics don't belong on here.
Resolution: Moderator, who ever you are and whatever you do. I propose that you start sending warnings to individuals for crossing the line. Once that you have gone past the magic number you won't be apart of this forum any longer. You can tell the people that are here to have fun and those that are here to destroy.

  • Wayne,
Nice points.I have also been reading the posts for a few years now but I dont post that often.I had the pleasure of getting to meet and talk with you at the National at that was great! I wish we could of spend more time talking.Things change but there are some worthwhile topics and posts still.Just gotta filter through.Great knowledge here on the boards.
  • Zardoz, I think that you are right. Also I really appreciated the pass at the nationals. That was extremely nice. I wish I would of had a chance to meet you there.

Vargha,1954, That is a very good analogy.

Jay, There are definitely a lot of great people on these boards!!!

Mantefan, I agree - sometimes it may not hurt to revisit things instead of links. Not everyone was involved in those discussions.

Dakota, It was great meeting you too and I really appreciate the help you were to me in completing the 74 set.

I'm not completely down on the boards and I do still enjoy them. I just don't think that most people would be ripping each other to shreds if they were having these discussions in person.

    Wayne,

I am sorry that I wasn't a part of these boards 2 years ago.I can tell you from my perspective that I find myself looking forward to these boards after work(as you have in the past), even though I agree that there is more than a little negativity on these boards.I actually see a certain amount of humor in those posts. It is amazing that people seem to find time to point out the negative.Human nature,I guess.I have learned much in my short time on these boards and appreciate the comraderie that I find here.I think that we laugh at(with) the funny and witty and laugh (harder)at the combative idiots who obviously have nothing better to do with their time.Life is far too short to do anything else.

    BTW,

It was nice meeting you at the luncheon.I should have worked the room more.I missed some great guys.I will do better next year!!!

this board is no different than the ratings of cnbc over the past
3 years.in bear markets prices drop, attitudes shift toward negative
sentiment and things just aren't as fun because,in part prices
    drop and money is dear.

I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF PSA FOR ALMOST A YEAR AND JUST RECENTLY REGISTERED MY 1964 TOPPS SET ! STARTED READING THIS BOARD ABOUT A MONTH AGO , AND IN DOING SO , READING EVERYONE'S COMMENT'S ON COLLECTING , INSPIRED ME TO REGISTER MY SET AND JUMP INTO THE EXCITEMENT THAT YOU ALL DEMONSTRATE ABOUT THE HOBBY ! UPON READING A NEW MEMBER'S QUESTION ABOUT A CERTAIN SUBJECT , HE WAS BERATED FOR BEATING A DEAD HORSE SUBJECT THAT HAD BEEN DISCUSSED TO DEATH ! I KNOW ALOT OF YOU CAME TO HIS DEFENSE , BUT JUST REMEMBER , WE ALL START OUT AS ROOKIES , LEARNING THE TRICKS OF THE GAME ! I AGREE WITH WAYNE , ALOT OF NEGATIVE STUFF - BUT ALOT OF GOOD READING ALSO ! A ROOKIE ! ROBBY

  • While this board "may" have been better 2 years ago (I was not here and can't tell you for sure), it is certainly still of value today. On the surface set registry seems like inventory software and a competitive arena to compare your collection to others with the same interest.

However, I would contend that reading the board is what pulls people into registry. For that reason, I believe this board is the single biggest draws for new collectors into set registry.

For me that's reason enough to continue the conversations.
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"
  • I'm new to the board. I've been reading the posts for a few weeks and just started posting a few days ago. I've already learned a lot and I see who the real players are. For me, this is exciting. However, there are a finite number of sets and topics related to vintage baseball cards. After a few years, you're bound to exhaust the information pool. However, staying on and helping newbies perpetuates the board, earns you respect and friends and always gives you an outlet if you need some obscure answer not readily available elsewhere.

I do see a bunch of guys constantly at war, but I don't think it is really ill-natured. Half the fun is throwing in a good barb, you idiot.

    See. I'm learning.

    Be well,
