New forum member

Hi all. This is my first post to this forum although I have been reading this forum for almost a year. I feel like I "know" many of you via reading your posts here and various correspondences through emails.

I will introduce myself. My name is David Moss. I am an Optometrist in the Memphis, TN area. My nickname comes from the first letter of my kids names (Amber, Brittany-adopted daughter, Brittany Ann, Aaron). Two Brittany's gets confusing at times!

Anyway, I started collecting sportscards in 1970 at the ripe age of 6 and carried through until 1979 when sports, cars and girls became more important. After years of adulthood, I have come back to my collecting habit, re-collecting the cards from my youth. I am actively pursuing the 1972 Topps baseball set currently but have several sets registered on the PSA set registry.

I feel like I've already gained a wealth of insight into the hobby from you guys already just from reading these posts and I look forward to interacting more with you here and drawing upon your collective wisdom.

    Welcome David!

But the 72 set???? What the heck were you thinking????image Not sure how much knowledge there is, but you will definitely find a bunch of smart a$$!!! Prices on 71 are still pretty strong, but the 72's especially in PSA 8 have dropped off dramatically over the last few months - pick them up cheaply while you can. Always glad to see another glutton for punishment!

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
  • Frank,
I'm laying low on the 71's for now because of the strong prices. The 72's are relatively cheap right now which is why I'm concentrating on it. I'll be up around 31% when I register my newest additions to the set. Not bad for 2 months time, but like you said before, the 72 set is a marathon, not a sprint.

I have a stack of 1971 PSA 7's if you feel the need. I am sure a lot of others here can help you towards your sets with 7's. Most of them will be strong cards that were sent in expecting 8's. If you are interested email

  • Two kids with the same name isn't a big problem. Here's a problem--I dated a woman named "Martina". She called herself "Marti". My dad's name is Martin. He goes by "Marty". Now, think about what happens in the bedroom when you call out "marti/marty" during the height of your ecstasy. It's downright creepy. I cried and questioned my manliness. I'm still seeing a shrink.

...Dont mean to pull the "can you conduct an eye test while at a party deal" but...

My wife is seriously considering LASIK. Our Optom seems casual about suggesting it and maybe
    he gets a kick back.

Are some procedures better than others?
    What is a reasonable cost?
    Anything to avoid, watchout for?

--she is worried about the cutting and the complications that could be permanent! Me too!

Maybe there are other board members who are considering this and you input could help others.

    Thanks.

  • My wife had it about 6 months ago. No problems, very little discomfort for the first 12 hours. She now has 20/20.
I think hers was right around 3k.
  • Carew,

First of all, I would need to know what kind of Rx your wife has. The BEST candidates are near-sighted with little or no astigmatism. The worst results come from farsighted RXs.

I have done many, many, many post-op LASIK followups and it has been VERY successful. Almost everyone has said that they would do it again if they had the option. I have never seen a "horror story". I saw much more of that with the surgery- RK.

LASIK will correct distance vision, but does little to help the "over 40" need for reading glasses that so many of us are experiencing!! As for price, it depends on who you see. If it's like Memphis, you can a discount doctor that would do it for $800. I would avoid them like the plague. A good reputable surgeon will charge $2-3K. Go to them, because like so many other things, you get what you pay for.
    Hope this helps!

  • Welcome to the Board (s) David! I'm pretty new myself. Seems we have a couple of thing in common: 1972 Topps and being an adoptive dad.

I guess we are in the 1972 marathon together. I'm really curious however about the comments about the bottom having fallen out of the 1972 cards. A question for those vets amongst us: where were "average" PSA8 and PSA9 commons going for a year ago (or longer)? I got serious on my 1972 set about three weeks ago, and after about 175 cards later I am averaging between $7 to $11 for commons, before shipping.
  • Machodoc,

I'm well aware that you are pursuing the 72 set as you sniped me out of some cards a few days ago! image Oh well, all's fair in love and cards I guess. Thanks for the welcome and maybe we can help each other out with that friggin 72 monster!

ABBAdad> To give you a better idea of what you asked about the bottom falling out of the market for 72s. . .

When I built the set the first time, I did it from about January 2001 to August 2002 and got to 94%. When I started, I set a goal of all PSA7s. That didn't last long because 8s were plentiful, but if I got 7s from my own submissions I put them into the set. PSA8s on eBay were typically priced -
    * Series 1-5 were generally in the $12-$21 range.
    * Series 6 were generally in the $20-$35 range.

In August 2002, I sold off the set to work on 75s and take care of a few other things. When the 75 set got to within a few cards of complete back in February 2003, I saw the prices of the 72s on eBay and decided I needed to dive back in. Since February, I've been VERY aggressive on the low-pop cards and bottom-fed PSA8 & 9 commons. In that time, I've gotten to almost 70% complete at a GPA of 8.12. But here's the trick - right now, I'd say I'm into what I have for right around $12/card. Granted, I don't have several of the major stars, but I have the more expensive ones - Mays, Mays IA, Fisk, Ryan, Aaron IA, Rose, Bench, Clemente, Clemente IA (PSA9), Carew, Carew IA, & Garvey. Sure, I need the Reggies, Munsons, and a few other HOFers - but I know those will all be available whenever I want to pick them up. And because I've managed to obtain all but two of the toughest cards in the set, the last 30% I need won't be the impenetrable wall it will be for others.

    Anyway, I hope this helps.

    Mike
So full of action, my name should be a verb.
  • Mike - What do you consider the hardest cards in the 72 set? For my money they seem to be the Mays and Aaron IA cards, but you have more experience there than I.

    Steve
  • mcastaldimcastaldi Posts: 1,235 ✭✭✭
Steve> Paul Schaal IA (#178) is the toughest. Only five PSA8 NQ with no 9s. Second is probably Maury Wills IA. Other tough cards - Ken Henderson (still have yet to see one perfectly focused), Alan Gallagher, Cleon Jones IA (always centered 90/10), Wayne Garrett (always 90/10), Ted Abernathy (not a nice picture anyway and then registration is always terrible), Frank Baker, Hal McRae IA (always 90/10), Reds RC & Ken Holtzman. Those are the cards that immediately come to mind.
