Don: I know Roger knows I am joking with him. Just having fun with the notion of "big brother" deciding which coins are Registry quality image

    Roger,
I guess that somehow I'll have to be satisfied with my PR68RD DCAM that I "made" this Spring from my collected proofs. Let's see....., my cost on that one was $5 back in 1983 and I guess I spent $10 to slab it before the price increase. Trouble is I KNOW I'm losing money on it right now cause nobody would pay $15 for it. Right? Now my Type 2, that's different. Same grade, same cost back then, but worth more today. right? Steveimage
  • Don, I appreciate you getting my back. Mitch has some nerve telling me .....imageimageimageimage (Yes , I did know he was joking though & OBVIOUSLY so am I)
  • Steve, based on current market data, even though you're looking at an approximately potentially disasterous 50% loss (a whopping $7.50 or so) I see no need to upgrade if you're happy with a 68DCAM. In fact, even a 69DCAM may set you back about a 200-300% or so to upgrade to. Why would you (or anyone) even consider spending about 25,000-50,000% of the price of you're nice 68? Of course that's the magic question (& answer). I personally like Mitch's previous "2 chaser's" theory. Of course adjusted for inflation since 1983, you're losing MUCH more than about 50% image - but are probaly breaking even on the Type-2.

Roger - You posted your buy price on this coin at $1500? Is your asking price $1800?

  • Yes Mitch. As soon as I buy one for $1,500 I'll sell it for $1,800. As of yet, no one has sold one to me for the current buy price, which as you've previously noted is still "25-50%" too low - IYHO. Therefore I can not yet have the "full confidence" that will be afforded to me when someone ACTUALLY offers to sell one at the "current" buy price.

Roger - That is confusing? Kind of "chicken and egg". You have one for sale right now and your buy price is $1500 today. So, why not just tack on 20% on your own buy price and offer out your coin? Otherwise, isn't that a tacit admission that the prices listed are too low? And, if the prices are wrong - then why list them at all? Wait till they are right before listing them? Just some questions on the whole situation - by no means is any of this negatively directed at you - just the opposite image

Roger, thanks for your response. As you can tell, I'm not too excited about the "pop top" game going on now with PCGS slabs. I'm just very happy to now own 76 Lincoln proofs in PCGS holders. I do admire your effort to establish some pricing stability in these modern "pop top" Lincolns' because it might result in the overall values of my coins increasing. As just an interested person and a real novice in the activity, I tend to think it will not work, but I admire your effort anyway. Steveimage
  • "by no means is any of this negatively directed at you"

Any criticism you can offer is both appreciated and welcomed AND viewed as a positive influence by me.

"isn't that a tacit admission that the prices listed are too low?"

More an admission that I'm NOT YET sure if it is high enough. You may or may not have noticed that many of my buy prices for both proof & especially for MS have been creeping up. Someone finally offered 3 coins last night to me - 2 top pops & 1 that wasn't but I made an offer anyway & he accepted.

"Wait till they are right before listing them?"

Mitch, a few good observations and the prime example of the difficulty of trying to do this. The statement above IS definitely the chicken/egg dilemma. I feel I'll NEVER know what the "right" price is UNTIL after I get the prices listed (and continue to tweak them) AND someone actually offers one to me. Of course, if you, & many others were willing to ALSO provide their (at least minimum) buy prices I could more quickly reach the intended goal of having the "right" price. image

p.s. You've yet to tell me which prices I'm offering for the MS Memorials you think are too high. Does that mean you'll offer more for EVERY coin? image

p.p.s. Since I'm ALSO not convinced of the CURRENT market level for this particular coin (on the "ask" side) & don't think past highs are any representation of the current demand, I'm taking offers on this to see just where the market is. I personally beleive the best will be about half of past highs. If I'm right, I'll definitely bump up the buy ("bid") price. image

Roger: Regarding these proofs, I think you know I have no buy or sell prices - I simply don't handle them.
